  • Now taking donations through my Paypal donate link... Update Paypal ripped me off for 1650. Paypal can stick it. No Paypal for me ever again, and if you are a seller, I would suggest you never use it either. It's just a matter of time.
    Dug out one of my keepers as someone may have made an offer I might not refuse. The unobtainium Buddy Base. It is a very early CB and is a 2 piece like a Browning. Separate Receiver and Transmitter. The receiver used an early Super-regenerative circuit which has amazing sensitivity, but horrible selectivity. Hence, it will pull in the weak ones if the band is quiet, but on the other hand, it will pull in around 6 channels at a time like receiving 6 channels at once. Who wants that. Since the transmitter is so awesome, people would often ditch the receiver and run the Transmitter with a good Browning receiver. They made a few versions of this radio, and this one has a 6146B final, which is the same that is used in a Johnson Ranger, and uses a single hi powered 6L6 '7581' for the final modulator tube. I believe these early radios where made before the FCC clamped down on power and audio and hence it is pretty much running full tilt from the factory. It is keying 2 1/2 swings to 17 average and 23 peak. This is one of the very few radios I know of that will out talk a Tram D201. I had planned on keeping it and not selling it but a potential buyer asked if I had one. I said yeah and he said how much. I gave him a Yellow Table price and he said ok. we shall see. If he backs off or changes his mind, it is going back to my keeper collector pile for good until I am ready to run it myself permanently.

    The Buddy Base receiver schematic that I have shows that receiver as a superhetrodyne with dual conversion and multiple IF stages, so it should be as tight as you will ever find in a CB radio.
    If yours is acting like a super regen receiver as you crank up the RF gain, you need to look at neutralizing the first RF amp stage because it shouldn't be self oscillating...
    If your transmitter is different, then your receiver might be different too, and I can send you a link to the schematic if you need it.

    A very fair evaluation Dr.! I remember when you showed a previous video of this radio I told my Elmer about it. He said exactly the same thing.🤣 I really hope that the guy plans on collecting it, not running it. Certainly it is rare and should be something to keep for history.
    Btw, do you know of any company that will cut crystals for these radios any more? It seems like they have all closed up.

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, seems like crystal cutting is going the way of the dinosaur.

    Nice history lesson. Never heard of that one. What year do you think it was manufactured or sold ? Maybe a VFO for the receive or some kind of filtering circuit. What microphone did they sell with it or offer ?

    • @tramdr
      @tramdr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Super Regenrative is like a turbo circuit that feeds back on itself. Great for sensitivity, but horrible for rejection. It would have to be reworked to superhet and I think it would be a shame to hack this radio. A VFO gives you more channels, but does not help the receive.

    I would very much like to get a copy of the schematic for that version of the transmitter.
    The one I have is for the 2E26 version of the transmitter and I need the one for the higher power (6146?) version.
    If you could point me in the right direction, like a hyperlink, I would greatly appreciate it.

    I've never seen one of those in the flesh. If you go back to the very early days of CB having a regenerative receiver was an advantage to figure out who was on the air. As the service climbed in popularity, Regen receivers were relegated to cheap walkie talkies. That said...
    Memories have a price. A guy followed me home from a hamfest one year and started handing out $100 bills for my memories. Yeah, my Demcos wound up on fleabay but he paid me twice what I paid for them. At the end of the day this hobby has to be a business. I know what I paid for my radios and I know what they're selling for today.

      Curious, what are the best talking AM Ham radios? I hear the Yaesu FT101 and Icom 7300 are very good.
