I was a kid in 1974 when I saw my first CB radio. I saved my money and in 1976, when 12 years old, I bought my first CB radio, a Realistic Navaho. It was a 23 channel, AM radio.
My handle was "Cisco Kid" and through my teens, CB was our social media.
I was alive and well, wide eyed and bushy tailed. I can still remember those incredible days of the wonder of instant communication with friends and neighbors. You could catch some hard core CB people on the air faster than you could make a phone call. In our county there was 4 or 5 different telephone companies that cost you a long distance phone call between them in the same county. Sometimes only a few miles down the road. CB actually save dollars and made sense. Once you got into the local scene you knew who was where on the various channels in fairly short order. You knew who had the big guns and could relay for you. Wasn't a big deal to work 20 miles with a stock radio and a base antenna in the 70s. It was absolutely magical to a kid to pick up the microphone and talk to people driving down the road or sitting at home or parked at the river. You just had to be there...if you think it was fun in black and white, you shoulda seen it in color.
I miss those good old days when I coould spin the dial every night and find someone to talk with, Now we turn it on at night when skip is done and it is dead on all 40 hear.
I'll never forget that soft and smooth clicking dial on our Royce home base unit.
Later got a Regency and my dad put up a huge antenna that was still there when I last drove by our old house in 2002.

Like the neighbor who used ti key up all over everyone. Using a linear amplifier. Then one day two guys had enough they hauled two bag of sand up to the 14th floor then dropped it right on his antenna bringing down his antenna and the window. Never heard from him again. He owed me money too for jumping his chip to give him extra channels. Never paid me.
Those days were a blast! Shooting DX, having 'eyeballs' in parking lots, local roundtables... CB's were the ORIGINAL social media! I had a Realistic Navaho base, a President 'John Q', and a Lafayette Telsat SSB 50 as my first radios. When I got my Ham license, I converted the Lafayette to work on 10 meters SSB, and worked all over the world running 12 watts! I miss those days bigtime.
AudiophileTubes Organizing weekly "fox hunts" kept your tracking skills sharp and kept us amused, shooting DX on SSB never lost it's appeal but AM is as good as dead here in Australia.

back in 1977 i was Road Runner KMV-2490..sister was Daffy Duck and father was Oklahoma Hotdog..used my father's Johnson Messenger 2... a bit north of Seattle...

1975 for me.
I got my first CB radio in 1980. But I can tell you my stepfather got his first in 1975 or 76 when he first got into it. And boy between us two it was different. But now those days are dead and gone I think we still kind of miss it. But basically I had a blast being on the TV just listening to all the truckers and talking to some of them. But the thing I didn't care for was a foul language. That's right I did not care for the foul language over the CB because that's not what I would do on the radio is start using a bit of foul language. Because that wouldn't work. And my first CB radio license was my last. And by the way to this very day I still have the same call letters drive used for 42 years. That's right I've used it for 42 years! But basically I really used them since the early 1980s I haven't gotten around to healing him yet. But the last time I used it was in the early 2000s. But as of right now I don't know if there's hardly anybody on the radio anymore. However, that will all change for the better. Because basically I can tell you this much right now whether or call Larry have three letters or four letters it still sounds the same.
When cb radio made a community now whe have mobile phones and people could not give a toss about each other

Got my first CB in early 1981, a brand new Colt 210 (illegal here in the UK) I still have it including the box, it's still in excellent condition too!

I have been a CB radio operator since 1975, I still have my radios hooked up and use them frequently. The woman in the wheelchair is keying that Johnson over 6 watts lol.

I had a bit of a break but I'm back again and Im still using the same 1980's rig and antenna.
I really hope cbs make a comeback. I love using mine but sadly not a lot of people use them anymore so there isn't a lot of people to chat with
Tyler Frazier Highly unlikely as the technology is considered antiquated and there are more efficient means. People don't understand or care that these modern means goes through someone elses network and will be worthless in a disaster. Also this new generation doesn't have alpha male fathers to get them interested in things like radio and electronics.
There still a lot of people there and you'll find more of a ham radio operators using CB radio you have to give it a try and I will not die is still around trust me I still use it.

Well I am age 71 and when I was in high school in about 1958 and 1959 I really enjoyed CB radios and you had to get licenses and I was 6Q 4870 and KIV 6272 I had several radios like a Johnson white faced . citi Fone 5 channel and a Sonar . You could only talk maybe across town and maybe a s much as 60 miles if you had a good antenna and lived on a hill. This was under normal conditions however with one watt you could talk all over the world when skip was in and people were really nice and sent QSL cards . It was better that ham is now and I am a advanced glass ham . You don't have to understand electronics for ham like you used to. Sure wish it was like it was back then with the new type radios of course.
I remember,as a kid, belonging to a Side Band Club in my area. We had parties and picnics all the time.
Cbs are still a very important tool still in trucking. Amazing how such an old technology is still going strong at least in the trucking world, I'd feel like half a truck driver with out one in my cab. Love being able to instantly inform other drivers about wrecks, bears, seat covers, brake checks, scales etc. You get the picture lol.
I was on 11 meters from Puerto Rico when it was a ham band and was disappointed when we lost it. All my equipment was all band including 11 but too strong to use for CB. Then I went into servicing the CBs but never did get on to talk, just used the instruments for testing. My advice is put money into the antenna instead of a linear amplifier, that will help receive as well as transmit.

Great video I really wish that I'd of grown up in the late 70's and early 80's when the CB radio first came out in the UK but I started back in 1995 and my very first CB radio was a Binnatone Route-66 and I had a CB Di-pole on the back of my parents house and the amount of people who were on at the time was unbelievable every single channel was almost in use and you could call out on channel 19 and you would always get a copy with someone no problem it was brilliant fun but sadly through the years it's started to die and there's only a handful of people left who still use the UK muppet band here in the UK. Same here set up a home base in 1977 when I was 15 spoke to truck drivers all across America from Sydney Australia on SSB 10 tears later I had a full Ham License .

This is a good topic! I would say CB will never die completely, nor is it likely to be the nationwide craze it was in
the late 70's with people making songs and movies about CB either. "Convoy", "Smokey and the Bandit" will most
likely never happen again. HOWEVER CB will always remain a fun hobby and have a fan base for people who like radio!
It depends a lot on your location and city population as to how much activity you will get on CB. Bottom line is, If your old enough to remember the late 70's and early 80's you have a different view of CB radio than a person picking up a CB radio for the first time in 2017 Its just not the same. Also some other communications options have hit the seen since CB radio of the 70's like FRS, MURS, GMRS the have cut down on CB radio activity as well.

I was 14 back then and my 1st CB radio was the Realistic TRC-52 with a Turner+3 power mic. My base antenna was a 5/8 wave omnidirectional. I got good distance with that antenna in Suffolk County N.Y., of course the mic squealed like crazy maxed out. My handle was Monkeywrench and I still remember all my friends hanle. That little 23 channel was a blast and was a lot more crowded.
I'm in Australia and got my first rig in 1977 also a super panther I was 15 and it was like todays kids with cell phones except everyone was on the phone with you.

My dad had that exact model in the beginning ... a radio shack something or other... I remember watching the little meter swinging when I was a kid.
please make a video about the Radio Shack Realistic TRC-414 radio CB. My Dad put this model of CB radio in his farm tractor and farm dump truck in the early 1980's. These CB radios functioned amazingly good for 2 mile range farm communications !

That's where the best days are I've miss the old days.
It didn't start with truckers, 27 Mc. CB started in 1958 with small business owners such as local heating oil delivery trucks, farms and families as well as hobbyists who were interested in electronic communications and socializing. It was a lot of fun then when users were better behaved and respectful of one another. It was similar to Ham radio and was a gateway to Ham radio for many. I was on in the early 60s and enjoyed meeting many CBers for an 'eyeball' and at 'coffee breaks'.
***** True about truckers, but the 'state of the art' of technology helped that along with the availability of solid-state miniaturized rigs that operated directly on 12 VDC. Early CB rigs employed vacuum tubes, were bigger, and were not as well-suited to mobile operation as transistorized gear. Sure, we had them in our cars, but you couldn't talk long w/o draining your battery if the engine wasn't running. I'm sure CB still is an important tool, but like everything else, it has changed over the years.
+Claudius I have a like new condition Browning Mark Three Golden Eagle and a Golden Eagle D104 microphone, along with a Siltronix 90 vfo, for extra channels and a mint condition Maverick 250 amplifier to hammer some heads.Sent through a Max 2000 antenna mounted on my roof top,three stories up. I alsl have a mint Teaberry Stalker One 23 mobile with extra channels, and all hot rodded out with it's modulation clipped that blows smoke for a back up base. I'm into the vintage stuff.

Summer 2020 - Amazing how units are still being manufactured, despite the mass-disposal market of smart phones. I remember circa 1982 for my introduction. Temporary call signs in the US was your first-mid-last initials followed by home zip code. :)

Some hotels had CB radios. Usually the ones truckers frequented. And a Hotel base radio, a with a bast antenna up about 40 ft, could pick up a transmission more than 4 miles away.

I was a CBer in 1977 it were the Year them FCC allowed 40 Channels Radios, Before that there I hadda COBRA 24 CHANNEL BASE and a HOME BUILD LINEAR with 12 Sweep Tubes I built from a Trticle in The Amateur Radio Handbook from 1945. I wasn't borned in 1945, At There was a my DADDY'S BOOK. Ise Borned in 1949. CB radios used to be. Not it isn't not. Finis.
I started late in CB life, back in 1985 (call sign Jupiter 1 or 4, I can't remember). Even back then when I was 16 and in a small city like Brisbane, AM and U/LSB was noisy with chatter of all sort like the boys calling out on 11 for any YLs available to talk to.Now those long haired tight wearing jeans YLs are all middle aged and older. After over two decades I set up my old Realistic TRC-451 to see what it is like now but I was disappointed. 27 MHZ CB in Brisbane and Sydney are dead quiet, no life at all and the life it once had is nothing more then memories.

In 1977 in Sydney it was noisy 24/7 you could here chatter on AM from American truck drivers in the early morning hours .Radios with the PLL 858 chip were the best to do your little tricks when they became available in 78

I was on cb many many years ago probably years 89-90 when every channel was full people once payed for licence aswell used to be named Plastic man back then when lived redcar i now live middlesbrough and just recently past year 2013 started to get back on rig with new handle local channel 19 users have named me hehe Young Spud.

As a 90s kid its kinda sad to me that the guys/girls from that time had the opportunity to learn electronics and other useful skills in school. I cannot even solder a simple wire connection without making a mess haha.

I wonder what killed off CB other than the heavy traffic on the burgeoning radio community? Cell phones didn't start becoming popular until the late 80s.
I was a bad boy. I would mess around with West Valley REACT (KQX-5915) and make them yell at me.
A lot of commenters here go back to the 70s, but anyone from the 60s? It used to be very much like ham radio then, use of licensed call signs (five dollars to the FCC if I remember right), everyone just talked in normal, conversational voice (how bout ya, good buddy, came along late 70s, and of course even that's now changed today - btw, do a lot of good buddy's work the truck stops today).
AM as opposed to SSB, obviously. I fully understand HF propagation and what defines HF vs.VHF, Summersky, I've been a ham operator for 30 years, and I primarily use HF at 10, 12, 15 and 17 meters. My point is that the main CB channels where AM in the US are clogged with skip related noise when the band is open. FM on CB? Maybe in Europe or Australia, but not here in the Nifty Fifty.

I started in CB Radio in 1965 at age 5 & still talk on them Today.Of course the CB was a lot more Fun back then before all of the Noise Toys,Echo Microphones,Talk Back,& Linear Amplifiers.You could actually use the CB without all of the Crap that's on every channel these days.That crap is what drove me to also get my Ham Radio License so I can talk skip 24/7 if I wish & run Big Power as well Legally & most Ham Radio Operators are not on the air seeing who they can cover up or cussing people out around the clock.Sure wish CB was what it was in 1965 when CB was still FUN but those days are long gone so I spend most of my radio talk time on the Ham Radio Bands where there is some control.
Ok backin the craze about 77. Mom told me my grandma and great grandmother would kind of dress up and go talk on Cb. Hilarious. Yesterday in my pickup and not dressed well, put out some info on wreck in Valdosta. However didn’t help them because they were already at scene, screwing the pooch.
Not a bad idea for today. I have to believe that soon all the phones will go off. I know we all think that that will never happen, But I don't know. Things are getten a little shaky.
Cb in the U.K was good even on the old A.M set ( of which was ILLEGAL at the time) & UNFORTUNATELY it also had another drawback it interfered with the TV 😠😵 & a licence had to be issued for those who managed to obtain a legal F.M CB (not ANYMORE!!!! 😁👏👏 & hasn't been in many years. But, many thousands of people chose to get what is called a SSB set ( also was & as far as I am aware is still illegal in the U.K to this date. But, FM is the only legal band with either 40 or 80channels. I don't think the authorities are too bothered about the SSB sets now as long as they don't cause any problems with other electrical or electronic items ( TV emergency services, armed forces & other radios) of which I have not heard anything about. I was once quite a big time cb radio user for many, many years & I enjoyed it. But, it unfortunately didn't last long due to ( what we call bucket mouths / using OBSCENITIES & constant music being played on the airwaves & also the STUPID mic keying 😞) It soon got out of control & it spoilt it for many & I eventually I gave it up SADLY!!! & I was out one day & some lowlife SCUMBAG stole most of my set up. One of the many cb's I had was a PRESIDENT LINCOLN (FANTASTIC SET) 😞😞😞😞😞 I have thought about going back on air a few years ago but, never did it having other commitments at the time. Now I can't afford it as even a very basic set up costs over £300. probably nearer to £600 depending on the set up ( cb , I would love to replace the Lincoln I had & suitable power supply for it ATU or SWR meter & antenna or aereal, coax etc, etc). & then the cost of putting it together. That may seem quite reasonable to some but, not to others when your out of work & having nasty bills left , right & centre. 😞 So, it looks like CB & I are over. ( NOT! looking for sympathy just understanding) of what it's like to have some SCUM!!! invade your home & steal your personal property. Especially when you know who did it & what's worse couldn't prove it. 😞 So, the SCUMBAG!!! got away with it all & made himself a nice little bit of cash. Obviously I don't know where this lowlife SCUMBAG is anymore not do I wish to know I am not a young man anymore not in too good a health either. That's why I was going to reconsider about going back on the cb but, NO!!! I don't think it's worth the trouble of going through the headache of trying to get all the gear together & the cost of it aswell. Aswell as putting up with verbal abuse, music playing & mic keying all over again. I had to make this posting to just say that I was a very inexperienced cb'r then but gained respect from many older & longer term operaterors. I was younger & a very keen cb'r until my terrible misfortune by a parasite of the world has the DISGRACE!!! to steal from someone else's enjoyment.
I was a CB'er back in 77 when the CB fad peaked. There was a lot of commercial overkill. CB t-shirts movies,stickers, Truck driving songs and countless new CB brands jockeying to cash in, but like every bloated fad the novelty wore off along with the worn out "Good Buddy" catch phrase. unlike the internet and smart phones which have revolutionized every aspect of our lives unlike. CB which never came close inspite the rosy hype and promise of the late 70s.

Are CB radios even sold anymore? All stores had them for sale. All stores had antennas as well. I have not seen a CB radio for sale in decades. I used to be the youngest operator in the neighbourhood when I was a kid. I was KBX1339. I wonder if it is even active anymore or if there is any record of it anywhere.

Nesta época o termo internet não era conhecido pelas massas como ocorre atualmente, a técnica evoluia muito rápido (tanto antenas quanto rádios), a sociedade valorizava muito o CB radio (o custo era acessível, mas nem todos podiam adquerir um equipamento de FC. O DX além fronteira passou a ser mais interessante e a troca de cartoes de qsl (correio ) também, enquanto hj a corfirmação de qso se dá quase q unicamente atraves da internet, em faixas de radioamadorismo.

We ran around with CBs in our cars in the mid 70s in high school. Was able to have REACT get a tow truck for someone that was stuck one time. That was pretty cool.

Truckers were origionally on channel 10, they moved to 19 because REACT complained of splash.

For me, I believe some of "over amplified" signals found on only a few channels was partly the cause for the decline in using CB radios. Another would be extreme lack of courtesy by a lot of the youth and some adults in their usage of profanity. Still today it's all about POWER in the wire.
