The Still Small Voice - Timothy Keller [Sermon]

  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: The reality of God is far greater than our conceptions of God. In this passage, Elijah, persecuted and feeling hopeless, returns to the mountain where God appeared to Moses and hopes for a similar spectacular revelation of His glory. Yet God confounds and comforts Elijah by appearing as a still small voice. What we learn in this passage is that God shows Elijah who he is. God shows us who he is. Who is the true God? When God comes, he comes in these ways: 1) In tremendous wisdom; 2) In humbling multiplicity; 3) In a word of grace.

This sermon was preached by Rev. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 26, 1999.

Exactly what I’m going through. Some depression but not hopeless depression like before when I was in the world. Just some deep sadness. And I see it, just because my plan is not working doesn’t mean Gods plan is not working. Thank you to the Rock for being my shield amid of all of this. Love you Lord Jesus, my friend!

So when I or we pray for God's manifestation , unless something happens in mystery, God shows who He is through Bible. And I find Keller's repeated , important message while I watch his sermon continuously ,which is that , Jesus got through what we deserved and we won what He deserved. And this happened under God's grace. I think this is Gospel.

26:43 putting God in a box.
28:49 what is the Gospel ?
29:50 you are more wicked thank you ever dared believe. You are more accepted than you ever dare hope.
And only when you push it out to the margins, will you be saved from the over optimism about your own abilities,
And the over pessimism about everybody else’s. Elijah was screwed up at that moment ,because he is not looking through the Gospel.
He is not understanding, he hasn’t been humbled by the multiplicity of God. He’s out God in a box.
33;45 what will actually penetrate and change peoples hearts? Gods voice, Gods word.

This is such a blessing to me as all Tim Keller sermons are, I really love and appreciate how He contextualizes the gospel into the culture we live in to make it more applicable. This sermon really hit home for me and I pray it reaches the hands of people all over the world that would really benefit from it. Thank you so much to everyone working behind the scenes to make it possible to share this sermon, it is helping me in more than I can explain to have a deeper understanding of the word of God and how to grow deeper in relationship with God. May God bless all of you abundantly In Jesus Name

This message touched my heart and gave me a glimmer of hope - which I thought had died in me.
That being said, I'm saddened that I haven't found anything similar (in terms of caliber) to this message in the various churches that I've visited or been a member of in the past decade. If I add in the reality that meaningful fellowship (which, for me, could absolutely make up for lackluster messages) has been sorely lacking in the churches that I've attended in the past decade, my unfortunate conclusion and begging question is this: Church? Why bother?!

I really don't think that saying "the reason your life sucks and your unhappy is because you're doing Christianity wrong and putting god in a box" (like literally all the charismatic crazies who think we can be sinless) is the best idea when dealing with this. I can see why people were wary, he uses modern nuanced verbiage.

    This is a great message!
One thing I would point out is that there are several occasions where God calls a wicked ruler (or at least one not sympathetic to the Israelites) to accomplish His purposes. Nimshi is just the "tip of the iceberg," so to speak. As a couple other examples, review prophecies about Pharoah Neco, Nebuchadnezzar, and Cyrus the Mede, and consider the extensive "history" given in Daniel, where the engagements of the king of the north and the king of the south and how they affected Israel are detailed almost down to troop movements! That God calls someone out and tells what they will do, and even says that person is anointed to do so is by no means an endorsement of that person's actions and piety (or lack thereof). You could apply the same to many people today and recognize that there are quite a few more people who are anointed by God for specific purposes today, but clearly have hangups, sometimes are accused of holding non-Christian ideals, and perhaps do indeed hold those ideals, ... yet God is using them!
This is not to say the charlatans who pretend to be anointed in order to fleece God's sheep are worthy of our attention. Please don't mistake what I say as an endorsement or even excuse for false teachers.

I have been stopping and pondering the different trials, testings, and hardships and can see how the Lord was not only knocking down my idols and dependency upon others, but in drawing me closer to Him and His love, His support, His comfort….I also understand that He uses everything to teach us and to conform us to the image of His Son.
