    I hate shorts as well!! TH-cam use to be a cool place to share your talents and stories but with "shorts" it's just trying to be tiktok. If I wanted to be on tiktok, I would have gone on tiktok instead. There is really nothing I can do though, besides hide the shorts section of my fyp and move on. Best of luck with your channel going forward; your art is gorgeous and your model is really satisfying to watch!!

    i typically avoid short form content because it just wrecks my attention span and it’s already short enough

      This for real!! I feel so gross after a shorts/tiktok/reels binge and I ended up having to put parent controls on myself so it tells you you've been on for too long. It's been a game changer.

    As a current shorts creator.. I feel the exact same issue... I am now contemplating just making an entirely new channel just for long form content as that is what I've wanted to do since I was younger. I want a sense of community. I want to be recognized by other artists. I want to help INSPIRE other artists instead of just feeding into the quick short form content that's lowering peoples attention spans. I am so thankful for all of my subscribers and I love them all so much. However there's just not that sense of community! They don't like me for ME, they like me because I make quick entertaining content. It has no sense of self. All of my personality and sense of self has been entirely removed from my shorts content. This is why I'm thinking about just continuing this channel, while also making an entirely new channel for longer form content.

    one huge problem i see with shot form content is that people don’t look at the profile of the account. they just look at the content. your viewers only see you as the content, not the person. the ends up creating a situation where you don’t get a loyal fan base. Just an adrenaline rush as your views and subs skyrocket.

    I have had a similar journey, I have been trying for years now, I did reach the 100k and got the button that i was dreaming of but... Because of shorts. So looking at it is bittersweet and I have it hidden now. I think your videos really do have potential tho, I loved this one and I cant imagine your long content not going big one day

    unfortunately i'm kind of going through the same thing! i started posting on tiktok like a year and a half ago because i felt really pressured to make the switch to short form content instead of only posting pictures of my art because it just wasn't working. luckily i actually enjoyed making those videos otherwise i probably wouldn't have stuck with it.
    not long after that i started reposting my tiktoks as shorts and reels to reach a wider audience. now that i've decided i really wanted to try out making long form videos they really are hit or miss, i did a video on art fight that got way more attention than i thought it would but other videos i've made have really just tanked and barely got any engagement despite me having over 1k subs. i've found that my long form videos don't get NEARLY as much engagement as low effort shorts that took no time at all to film and edit.
    it just sucks how unkind content creation has always been towards artists, especially ones who don't have a specific niche-i post my crochet work and digital art because i don't like doing the same thing over and over. anyway, great video and i hope you're able to reach your goal and find your audience, i just subbed! :D

    I tried dabbling into YT shorts since my dad recommended me to do them if I wanted to grow my channel more. when I did make them, it got tons of dislikes and backlash from randoms because they took a joke I made the wrong way. I personally feel like unless if you're making mainstream content that appeals to most people, you'll have a hard time getting any engagement if your content is made for a specific niche like original characters (especially in my case)
    the comment sections are absolutely vile too
    I also tried doing Insta reels and they performed somewhat better compared to shorts, but then again it's most of my followers who engage with said reels. so you also have to rely on the community you've built previously to get to watch your videos
    they also destroy attention spans too, it's even worse when ADHD is involved. hence why I found myself scrolling on reels for an half an hour because I didn't have anything better to do. it feels mentally draining for my already terrible attention span

    this is really the main problem that i have with youtube shorts too, lots of artists on any short related format are only recognized by their videos, and i think they want to be seen as more than just that and have an overall sense of community

    This is honestly why I haven't made any shorts yet. I've come to realize in recent time that making longer content is so much more fulfilling for me. It just feels like you build a better sense of community with your audience. I occasionally will go on shorts. But I only follow a small amount of people and usually just watch them. And I still try to watch their bigger content. Still, it feels so empty at times (for me a least) when even considering to do shorts. I honestly wish you well on this journey of trying to build a community and be a popular TH-camr!!! I'll def sub and watch some of your other content, especially cause it sounds like my cup of tea!!!

    You have earned a sub because YES that is what I been feeling! I restarted my channel but unfortunately I started it back with the TikTok mindset because that’s what everyone was doing. After awhile I just hated it and actually had to sit down and stop everything to actually just restart over again (I have this channel for years so I don’t want to give it up).
    Since I want to be more animated based I know they will be short videos but I don’t feel like turn them into shorts because it left a bad taste in my mouth. The shorts got me subs but once I stopped for a break those subs left. Yet I feel like it’s going to be a lot better start over once I get it altogether.
    Hope your journey is going well too; sounds like you’re ready to hit another milestone and I congratulations you!! Keep going!

    I do a mix of shorts and long-form content, but I definitely enjoy making long-form content more. This is an interesting point I never thought about…I wonder if my shorts are hurting my long-form videos?…they don’t seem to be, but also I haven’t had a viral short so maybe that’s why.

    first of all: great vid, you draw great)
    secondly: I personally think that TH-cam shorts, like any other new technology or feature, are not bad (I have seen many useful short films, but I still like to watch long videos ), it is bad when people abuse new technology and do not use it properly, one way or another, the main thing is to continue to do what you like)

    d'you have a process for confidently coming up with the idea's for your content? I've attempted so many times to think of idea's but it has always been my wall to actually making the content I love watching, maybe its the adhd 😅 I love that you have so quickly built a little community here its an aspiration of my own but i think modern media (Short form media) has really killed that community feel I remember from the 2010s art/YTr world.

      I do have days (or weeks) where I can't come up with anything, and when things like that happen I talk with friends on discord, or ask for ideas from my viewers. There's a ton of discord servers targeted towards artists and content creators out there that help a ton with brainstorming

  • @aarantheartist
    @aarantheartist 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love them and I hate them. They really allow you to get way more viewers than the usual long form system; it feels like shorts do well if they are good quality and there is a lot less chance for decent videos to just fail. But, on the other hand, totally agree with what you’re saying about the sense of community, and there really ain’t much chance that shorts viewers watch your long form stuff!

  • @fantasycreed
    @fantasycreed 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hmmm… I started out with short form myself, and now I’m trying to post more longform. I only post shorts as an extra video in the middle of the week, or if I can’t keep up with longform things. So far, I’ve seen some slowly-growing success with my longform content, and I’ve even built up a community with several young artists who really seem to enjoy my ideas!
    In your experience- what do you think I should do? Should I make a second channel?? Am I making a mistake while I mix shorts into my normal content?? Am I actively harming myself while I post shorts? I intend to animate my books into shorts as well, but I don’t wish to sabotage myself haha
    Also, you seem cool! I’d love to possibly collab, if you’re still wanting to collab with others :3

    • @AthalieDrawsThings
      @AthalieDrawsThings  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey nice to see ya here! so yeah I've seen other people who started with long form and sprinkled in shorts on the same channel and regretted it once a short went viral, because most people who watch shorts stick with shorts and will tank the click-through-rate of your long form videos. Your videos appear to your subscribers first. But there's other channels who do super well with them both combined. If I were you I'd keep an eagle eye on your analytics, and if your long form videos start to dip then a second channel for shorts might be best. That's how I found out things were a bit sus on my first channel.

    I really sympathize; I have also been trying the same thing, and to some extent I wanted to follow in Markiplier’s footsteps for a long time. Been at it for years over multiple accs.
    Personally, my biggest issue wasn’t anything to do with Shorts vs Videos, or even the format I used; it that I was never really in a good space to properly create, and I didn’t know how to fix it. Much like your art of the girl and the ring light under a bridge, I could never hide how demotivated I was, and I hated what I was making.
    Whether it be stuff like issues at home, school, work, etc., I was always dealing with too much. And the saddest part about it is that it never improved based on my own actions; I was never even able to really produce anything good until I moved out.
    From then on, I tried doing Facecam gameplay, but to be honest, I realized I hated it. I hated going through all the trouble of wearing makeup and working on my lighting only to be exhausted by the time the webcam was recording. It was preventing me from doing the thing that I wanted to do most, which was play games and have fun, which I couldn’t do if I was tiring myself out first.
    So now I have two personas; one where I get to have fun and play games, and I don’t facecam, and this one where I will be putting long-form content.
    It’s going to be hard, but you will eventually find your place and what works for you.

  • @raze2012_
    @raze2012_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, you bring up 3 huge issues all at once here:
    1. Shorts aren't there for you, they are there for TH-cam. They want that Tiktok money and (from what I hear from other youtubers) they pay out a lot less in exchange for views. But you see the "quality" of those views. That's why long form youtubers get spammed to no end to "just make some shorts!". It's a huge honeypot. Some are okay with that, but others feel "stuck".
    2. YT really wants to force people to do only one thing on a channel, forever. And as you saw the algorithm© punishes you hard if you try to do something else, even something that's basiaclly the same genre. I've seen this with gaming youtubers that try to change to other franchises. Sometimes even other games in the franchise . It's stupid. The best start is pretty much to try and make a variety channel from the start, even if you end up focusing on one specific topic for views.
    3. You're an illustrator , and I can never recall a time where YT respected the time that goes into 2d animation. Seems like even c. 2024 that is difficult unless you fall into that shorts honeypot. YT will still help, but make long term plans to transition to other platforms (Patreon/Twitter for commisions, Artstation to try to eventually get into industry) or even mediums (maybe team up to work on some indie games) to really stand out. YT has never been stable for artists, and they always seem hit hardest when the algorithm© decides to change on a whim.
    Best of luck out there.

    No, don’t get me wrong. I love the fact that a lot of people see my content.
    But it gets extremely annoying when a video that took you days even MONTHS to complete only gets nine views and maybe two likes.
    But then the very next day you decide to throw together an art time lapse short, and then that thing gets 10k views and 135 likes!!!! Like Excuse me?

    I don't exactly like youtube shorts as well. I'll try to make the shortest videos I post past this point be 1 3/4 minutes minimum except for memes. I don't even like making too many memes at the same time. I'd rather make a collage or collection of offered-to-be-memes together per video than break the spirit of... whatever my channel is about.
    Kind of learned my lesson the hard way that if you so much as communicate in a bad area for your retention, if you can't isolate the problem they point out, then people will go to the bad area for your retention, but that's another story.

    Creating shorts is such a double edged sword. Yes, you get the views and likes, but it's without a real community. Most people who came from shorts aren't gonna stick around for long form content, they'll just keep scrolling. I appreciate your sentiment, but you should remember the era in which Markiplier exploded in was a completely different internet environment and culture. Art content may arguably be one of the most difficult corners of TH-cam to successfully build a loyal and strong following. Watchers these days have a significantly smaller attention span, and the majority of artists I see these days that get decent view counts usually promote borderline NSFW stuff. Which, in my opinion, is even more soul sucking than getting popular off of youtube shorts 🤷‍♀️

    • @AthalieDrawsThings
      @AthalieDrawsThings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh for sure, I agree with you. I say Markiplier is my inspiration not because I want to be just like him, that was mainly a joke. Instead, I want to start some big charity events like he did, or to do something amazing for others one day through this channel. He has a huge sentiment towards his audience and his community is overall positive, and I strive for that too. He also, as far as I know, has never run into drama. I should have been a little more specific with wording, but that's what I meant when I said I wanted to be like him.
