    "Storm in the Room" is a great example of one of the really cool things about the Steven POV: we never hear the thoughts of the characters, even Steven himself. We see the whole show from Steven's perspective but we don't read his mind, we don't know what he really thinks about deep down. And that allows for genuinely shocking moments, such as the revelation that Steven is harboring all of these negative feelings towards Rose. Like you, I wondered about Rose's motivations for having Steven. And like you, I was surprised to see Steven actually verbalize a similar thought, that Rose had him in order to escape her mistakes. It's cool to me that even though the show is literally titled "Steven Universe", Steven is still a bit of a mystery to the audience. Especially for a children's cartoon, it's some really cool writing. Although yes, like with everything else on this show, there is foreshadowing/setup for Steven's feelings. They don't come from nowhere.

      ... 'We don't read his mind' That's a brilliant observation, thanks, wow.

    • @caitrose2198
      @caitrose2198 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Oh yeah that’s a good observation. Most media that’s told in third person is omniscient, so we know their thoughts (especially books)
      But here we don’t see how Steven actually *feels* very often because he’s kind of hiding it, he doesn’t feel like he can tell any of the gems his real feelings since they already have such an investment in Rose

      @@caitrose2198 Exactly. It was a very deliberate choice by the show's creators to have this non-omniscient Steven POV from the start. And I personally love the way it affects the show. It is a big part of what makes SUF work so well. But it also means that things aren't spelled out for the audience. I personally like that but I get why others might not.

    Always remember:
    Steven has had to deal with creepy corrupted versions of gems, gems who he's never met who claim to know Rose who want to kill him, gems who've never met him who still want to kill him, gems who he's befriended who either turn on him and want to kill him or end up in a horrible tragedy that incompacitates them (usually right in front of him), the literal dictators of his entire half-race are hunting him down for blood (or shards), his dad's balding, the world almost ended because of a giant nuclear weapon under the earth, he's almost been killed on several occasions, and since all of this has happened, HE'S 14 YEARS OLD.

      "his dad's balding" really is traumatic compare to the other sentences 💀🤣

    storm in the room is one of those episodes that really just makes me think....steven is a *child*. he is fourteen years old. FOURTEEN! and he's having to deal with all of this.
    he's just a baby. it's truly unfair to him.

    No you're right, the earrings are where the Alexa voice was coming from. It's individualized so they can keep them in line, like we saw when Steven didn't want to join everyone in the water, it prompted him to do so. But there is also probably an overhead one for everyone to hear like for the Choosening.

      What's amazing about this show is how much it can hit us even when nothing 'happens.' Like... all that happens is walking around and talking a bit.
      But it means so so so much.

    @timebubble8421 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    no you're right the voice did come throught the earrings lol

    Lapis is a difficult character to summarize. The simplest way to boil her down is that the Crewniverse use her as a way to explore/overcome trauma, which means that most of her screen time is spent on her getting put through the wringer. But at her better days she's a pretty deadpan/sarcastic character. I really like her as an example of a person's path to recovery. She's been through a lot and is trying her best to get her footing
    Also: Yes! The weird zoo Alexa voice comes through the earrings! Whenever she was speaking in the zoo the earrings lit up. They're really cool :)

    • @caitrose2198

      Lapis is a pretty weird character. I love her a lot but some don’t. She’s obviously got a LOT of trust issues and other stuff in there but she’s a cool person.

      It comes out later that similarly to how Amethysts are jokesters and Pearls are tightasses Lapises are basically all kinda bitchy. They can get less mean abt it but it’s just kinda part of who they are, they’re just all kinda catty 😂 I sorta love that. It doesn’t inherently make our lapis a bad person but she does have some things she needs to make an effort to fix, which is a pretty close allegory to things like cluster B personality disorders.

    His ears definitely were pierced, they just didn’t show any holes. He did a hiss of pain when the automated system put them in during the zoo debacle.

    Connie probably briefly met Peridot back at Steven's birthday party. Peridot was working on the drill during the ep, and I don't think they actually were onscreen together at any point, but they were both in the same place at the same time.

    So i dont remember the details but I'll tell u because the show doesn't ever explicitly tell u. All gems have 1 gem, thats their everything(mind, body, memories, purpose, all in the stone) they then use light to create their forms(thats why they can poof as long as the gem isnt damaged)
    For steven to be a gem, he needs a gem, and due to gems not reproducing like humans, a side effect was rose needing to pass on her genes(gem) to steven for him to be born
    Lastly someone once said rose shape shifted a womb and necessary parts to get pregnant. It was one of the ppl working on the show

      Another thing is gem placement. For some of the characters their gem placement reflects their personality.
      Pearl is very in her own head so her gem is there
      Chest gems take things a little personal or something like that
      I don't remember what lapis' meant

    • @ananon3560
      @ananon3560 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@troy6646 Also gem placement (and color) is notable because it might indicate what diamond the gem serves/court the gem is in. The diamonds have very set personalities that is reflected in their subordinates

    Garnet has electricity, but doesn't use it much. She stopped Holly Blue's whip, took out some gem experiments with it, and reversed Peridot's electric attack. Oh and started Greg's van and the arcade machine.

    I’ve always loved how they make Steven so realistic! There are always going to be certain questions about others decisions that can’t be answered, but normally, people bottle it up until they can’t anymore! If you don’t know, amethyst’s voice actor is an adopted Asian, and I relate to that so much! You can’t get answers from those not in your life, but keeping the family one has NOW is really important and special ❤

    kinda late, but I do find it interesting how you found it hard to place Lapis' personality and her gem location is definitely a nod to that, so it's ironic that you re-noticed her gem location around the same time as you mentioning that.

    Peridot and Connie met at Steven's 14th birthday, which happened at the barn while they were building the drill to deal with the Cluster. We didn't actually see them meeting, but they're both there in the episode so presumably they met at some point.

      I don't know how I feel about that interpretation. (She's gone). I mean, he does know things that he shouldn't possibly know about her, but I don't think that any part of her other than her memories remain, and even those are buried. Steven is Steven, the implication that Rose is anything more than a haunting memory or a subconscious dream disturbs me
