    In the 70s, I drove a Mustang GT350 and a Porsche 914-6. I couldn't hear the radio in the GT350, and I could hear the gas in the tank sloshing around when coming to a stop. The 350 was track oriented, the Porsche more of a fun sports car. I flipped a '53 VW bug when I was younger going around a slow curve in a light rain. It was snap oversteer, at night, and it slid back into the road vulnerable to any traffic that might come. That low speed skid and flip forever turned me off from cars that have the engine slung out behind the rear axle. I drive a 981 Cayman now, very happy with it.

    I have a 718 GT4. PRO: mid-engine is better and more natural feeling than rear-engine and more approachable. CON: Multilink rear of the 911 is superior to the strut based rear-end of the Cayman.

    I have owned a 2015 981 Cayman S and a 2018 991 911 GT3. In your case, the GT 3 is the more desirable car. However, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS actually has a real Porsche GT engine.
    The first generation GT 4 that you’re driving was geared way too long. The 718 GT 4 is a 3 L engine bored out to a 4 L engine. If you get the GT 4 RS, it is a true 4 L GT engine just like a GT3 and it revs all the way up to that 9000 range
    BTW, my Cayman S had PDK and the GT3 was manual. The Porsche manual transmissions are great but their dual clutch PDK IS just awesome. I wish my GT 3 was a PDK and not a manual. My Cayman S also had the sport plus package which included launch control and that is just so much fun.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah shorter gears would have made a big help

    • @Viporghini
      @Viporghini 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      718 GT4 has the same gearing as the 981 GT4. Difference is the 718 has a touch more power and slightly higher redline. The gearing really isn't much different than the GT3, again, you don't notice as much in the GT3 because of the added power and quicker revving. The 981 GT4 was an experiment. They had to handicap with 30hp less than the same engine had when it was in the Carrera S and some longer gearing, otherwise, it'd probably be more liked than the PDK-onky 991.1 GT3.

    I like both cars. Personally, not having driven them, I'd prefer the Cayman if you removed the roll bar. I'd also replace the seats on both cars with the electric "comfort seats" because I wouldn't be tracking either car and those buckets look like a PITA to get in & out of. I do like the rear seat delete on the GT3. I used to own a VW Golf R with the DSG trans and really loved that.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the carbon seats are not the most comfy or friendly for getting in and out

    • @TheKoolaidekidd
      @TheKoolaidekidd 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I struggled hard when picking the 718 GT4 over a 911, but I've always been a fan of the mid-engine as my first Porshe was a 914 way back in the day. I like the cleaner, slicker side profile also. Don't get me wrong. That 911 rear is the best. I've driven several 992 S's and that rear dip takes some getting used to in the corners. You have to learn just trust it :). I went with the PDK and 18-way seats. I own a modified 89 E30 which I've owned since new which is enough manual shifting for me.

    I share the same sentiment. But to be honest I'm much more comfortable with front-engine cars. Even with my 4C, I'm still trying to get used to its behavior in the turns at the track. My other track car is an Alfa with the transmission in the rear and engine at the front, so it's very balanced. But hey if you're a good driver you can adapt to anything. I'm certainly not one of those good drivers.

    Having driven both platforms from Porsche, I prefer the mid-engined Boxster/Cayman. The weight of the 911 engine is too far back. But the Ferrari chassis feels lighter and far more nimble than either Porsche. Plus you get the glorious-sounding V8. I do like the cabin layout and build quality of the lesser Porsche.
