just wanna point out that there is a routing tab on massive x to the left of the envelopes and LFOs... it may seem a lil complex at first but its really not. it becomes easier the more you use it... also that part of massive x where you clicked and it had different options like "standard, bend, mirror, hardsync, gorilla etc" is where you select the sound engine you'd like to use, each one has its own character and does different things to the wavetables/harmonics (as you alluded to if i recall correctly).. personally i love the ART sound engine for guitar and pluck like sounds. if you activate the FM section and use ratios that are fractions (1/3, 1/5, etc) instead of whole numbers while in said mode, you get some pretty realistic pluck/string like sounds. the jitter and random sound engines are super cool for glitchy/noisy shit as well.
i agree with whoever said that spending the time to get to know massive x can result in it sounding however you want it to... the one drawback i think with massive x is it's sampling... its a little limiting when compared to UVI Falcon, Current by Minimal, or Equator2 by ROLI.. and the performance tab (the sequencer-like section) is a little weird as well.. still dope and one of my fav softsynths for sure.. great video tho man enjoyed it

Massive X is my go to.. When you spend the time and get to know it, it can be and sound anyway you want it to.

I love the old Massive! ....after 4 years with Massive I still experience "wow" surprises...and also the feeling that I still have a lot to learn....The preset settings have helped a lot in understanding the functions...Big fat FANX !

I use Massive X extensively . Massive X is more modular .I think the presets let it down though and even the preset packs . When you dive in and start to make your own presets it can be appreciated much more .

Try Zebra2/HZ... At first it may seem complicated but its really not! And once you learn things over time more and more shit opens up for you to do as you go... Light on the CPU too!

I still use massive as my main synth... Parameter mutation/randomization is something I miss from new synths.. And can't really figure out why it's not implemented in more VSTs.
I'm not sure what is happening behind the scene of massive X... But it takes toll on my cpu to the point I'd rather have few instances of normal massive then massive X.
