Really enjoyed this interview. He's been around for so long and done so much, successfully, that it was interesting to hear him talk about how he thought his career was over at three different times in his life. It was also interesting to hear him talk about how as you get older as an actor you have to learn to adapt and change to your new circumstances otherwise you could curtail your career by trying to stay the same. I found him to be very thoughtful and unpretentious with his answers.
If you are new to Smartless sit back and enjoy. Smart but simple, casual but revealing! Ethan Hawk, exactly what I anticipated! Engaging, down to earth, not pretentious! Loved background on his Mom! HEY, you three idiots, keep up the amazing work!
Am same vintage as you guys.... thoughly enjoy every one of your pods (too cool to say podcasts). If you have a spare week, zip over to Melbourne, Australia.. we'll play a couple rounds of golf and do dinner!
Love this podcast!! Love Ethan Hawke! I do disagree a little with his analogy of Elvis making the wrong decision at 19 years old? Who knew what or who he would've become? Elvis probably would've looked back and said the same thing had he been a stronger person who was pressured by so many people in his life to provide for them.......it is so easy to look back at yours or a person's life and say they should've done this or that, but when you are in it, it is hard to see the future......grifters are good at the "snowjob" and you don't see it until way later. But I do agree that you need to stay true to yourself, which is not always easy! Thanks for this awesome conversation.
I think anyone that goes to Graceland and sees how awesome Elvis was at home would think he made good decisions in life (if those people are fun). A bar/go-go dance hall outbuilding overlooking squash courts... his planes... the 3 TV basement in blue? There's man caves and man castles and then there is Graceland.
Please do a sketch about the first actor. The first caveman who woke up one morning and decided he would perform for the other cavemen. They'd never seen acting and were terrified by it, and killed the actor. Please do a sketch about that. You guys can make it superb.
I love your show, is really insightful. My only nitpic is that you maybe compliment every guest too much. In the intro we already understand how much you admire these people, but when you listen to the full episode it sometimes becomes too much sweet talk.
Huge crush on Ethan Hawke!! I love Before Sunrise! Too bad we cant see your handsome faces! You should interview his mom..she seems like a wise woman...
This is garbage- these guys don't need to be sponsored by amazon- just do a podcast because you want to, not because amazon is paying you to. Elitist nonsense.
Wow! What an unhappy person you must be. Sean, Jason and Will are the BEST podcasters out there. I am personally thrilled Amazon picked them up. Lots of joy and laughter every show!!!!
I am overwhelmed by how good this talk was. As a writer, his ideas on art and life are so inspiring to me. Plus all three hosts were so funny 😂

Training Day knocked me on my ass! The tension and release that goes on in that movie leaves me exhausted every time. Thank You!
43:35 GOB would be angry at Will for this error 😂

Never really been interested or knew much about Ethan Hawke as a person but this was a very good interview
My favourite episode of smartless!!
The description mentions Pedro. Where is Pedro? I searched for Pedro but cannot find Pedro. 😢
He played the part of Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite... Lol
@aisle_of_view What? No. Ethan and Pedro Pascal have a new film so I was expecting discussion of that.

My favorite ever!!!!❤❤❤
I loved "The Last Movie Stars"!
People were really mad at Ethan Hawke for stealing Winona from Ben Stiller in Reality Bites, lol!

Bateman has lasted because he's talented and likeable ...its not magic

couldn't agree more. it's the ultimate in greed. They all 3 have more money than god.

@@carolinerado5007 na, I'm delightful - just not a shill for Hollywood
@@carolinerado5007 no one questioned quality of what they do . It’s a great podcast . But they don’t need to make money and sell ads was the statement
@@jimmneedle Understood. I am just a huge fan...I am happy for them and their families that they are recognized for their
Fantastic talents.
