In my opinion one of the reasons is because all 3 teams are located within the two of the biggest cities in portugal (Lisbon and Porto). Just the two cities alone take huge amount of the population within Portugal. Hence, people grow up with the influence of the clubs which leads people to support them. Bigger fanbase tends to lead to more money being invested in those same teams giving them an edge in winning trophies.
The matter of the Championships of Portugal and the Portuguese League is really complicated. To be honest, as a Benfica fan, I agree with Sporting in that matter, the “Campeonato de Portugal” was the national championship at the time, and deserves that recognition, so I agree with the 23 Sporting Portuguese League victories
Sporting fan here. I agree with you, but the tour guide didnt know to explain the history properly. @Footy Adventures if you wanna know a little bit more about it I'll be more than happy to explain to you. Keep up the good work!
I don't agree, I give that Sporting has 23 championships (19+4), but you can't say he has 23 leagues cause the old campeonato wasn't a league but a knockout tournament.
no way. things were played very differently back then, with the championship's format being composed by knockout stages. it has nothing to do with today's format. plus, we shouldn't ben discussing that just to begin with. the official consensus is that sporting has 19 league titles under their belt. period.
@@martingoncalves8214 No, inform yourself, Benfica stays on 37 bc they would get 3 of the other tournaments stripped, and 3 campeonatos de portugal added cancelling it out
Sporting fan since I was a little girl. This club is part of the fondest memories I have of my late father. He always told me we were different and special from the other clubs and I sure feel that way. We may not have the biggest number of titles or fans, but we love our club with a passion and with all our heart. That's why we never give up believing in our club in spite of long runs with no titles. It was great to see someone from other country discovering our story. I really liked your videos here. Please come back whenever you want 💚🦁
Tks for visiting us, I think it s my first video that I watch on this channel, because of course I m Sporting fan. Stay cool, I m already a subscriver....and SPORTING 4EVER👕 Fun Fact: Our founder José de Alvalade is a very disciplined man, and they descrived him in that old times like : "Tall boy and slim, with a british calmness" .
The guide was really good, very knowledgeable, it’s interesting hearing about all that history. Cheers Sam ! I remember Ricardo well 😳 and , luis Figo, what a player
Perfect video to let people know a bit about Sporting history and life stile, You do have to go to pavilhao Joao Rocha and see the atmosfere of the indoor futebol or a hoquey game, it's not that diferent from a football game but since it's indoors its a bit like times 10... and if you really have the time do a tour of the academy it's also something to see... thanks for your great work showing our clube and our contrie
Around min 16 you're talking about the clear skies but not aware that behind you is the João Rocha Arena where the indoor sports (futsal, handball, basket, volleyball, rollerblade hockey) are played and if you fancied the vibe on a big match in the stadium you'll go mental with the vibe inside that arena on a big match day.
I would like to give you Sam and appreciation word, because your doing a fantastic job and being a football fan this type of content is really nice watch. I hope you go to other countries and post vlogs just like this. I'm loving it. Congratulations.
Thanks so much Gonçalo! I've got a few weeks left in Portugal but I definitely want to cover more countries this year. I hope to go to Germany soon. Lots of cool stadiums there to do games and tours in. Muito Obrigado!
Those old trophies are so cool looking. I’m a sportinguista live in America but have spent alot of time in Lisbon , cant believe i never visited the museum.
You could have gone to the Sporting pavilion/ sport facility, it's that gray building that is after the roundabout that appears at the end of the video. The best pavilion in Portugal, pavilion João Rocha.
For a tourist/foreigner your pronunciation is actually quite alright, non-portuguese speakers usually just pronounce everything with a spanish accent which we hate, but you did very well! Great video, even tho I'm a Benfica fan, cheers from Braga, Portugal 😊
Of course, Ronaldo will play a few games for Sporting at the end of his playing career. He said so and he's a man of his word. Probably after the World Cup, if Portugal qualify.
Welcome to Sporting!!! You have to watch the videos in Sporting's TH-cam Channel :)) You'll love the "Backstage" videos. Enjoy the best club of the world :)
I'm a sporting fan and the guy forgot to say that the portuguese championship did not count the winner as a champion of portugal, but a competition that was called "experimental league" that was supposed to be an experiment to see if the league form worked in Portugal, it was just 4 years, benfica won 3 and porto won one, there weren't all the teams there but it counts as a league title today and sporting had 4 titles that did not count that should count, benfica has 3 titles that shouldn't count and porto has one that shouldn't count.
There are 3 big clubs because those are national clubs, that are supported by people all over the country, there are local club supporters in smaller cities but nothing like the big 3.
The Campeonato de Portugal should not be counted as a typical Portuguese championship. As in England with the FA CUP it is the oldest competitive model, it does not assume the position of a championship because of this. The Campeonato de Portugal had a knockout format which is very similar to what the taça de Portugal is today. Furthermore, the replacement for the Campeonato de Portugal was the Taça de Portugal in the 1938-39 season using the same format and trophy. In my view, and I believe the correct one, is that the Campeonato de Portugal should be counted as a Taça de Portugal.
FPF in 2022 celebrates 100 years of our official football competitions, with 100 editions (different in their format), with 100 Champion titled clubs that won it, but FPF (Federação Portuguesa de Futebol) or BLF (Benfica Lobby Federation), just consider 86 Champion Clubs!!?? Doesn't make any sense! History must be respected! 100 years with just 86 Champion Titled Clubs?? It's a JOKE!!
Try and get to Vitoria Guimaraes if you can. The underachievers of the league. Outside of the big 3 the best supported side, they and Braga are big rivals.
That Guide Tour guy is wrong. The 3 Grandes are the remaining Teams that never ever have been relegated to the 2 Division. Belenenses was the last Grande to lose this crown in the 80s or 90s.
Sporting fan here. Our kits were different at first (go check the stromp kit, you'll love it) but one time in the early 1900's (probably 20's idk from the top of my head) we went to play on a northern country. The weather was so cold that the football team asked Sporting's rugby team for their kits since those were warmer, the rugby kits had the green and white horizontal stripes and that's how we started to go out on. Hope I could answer your question 😉
Of course the guide had to indoctrinate on the issue of the number of championships won. Apart from that, what I think explains the 3 big teams issue is that both Benfica and Sporting are not local teams, they’re national teams and never inspired to be representatives of the city they played in. At least that was never the spirit in which they presented themselves. As to Porto, it got a lot bigger when the current president took office in the 70s and transformed the club in a representation of the city (which is big) and anti-centralism. People from all over the country adhere to these 3, no matter where their from, except Porto which is a little more localized. Local teams (with few honourable exceptions) tend to have very few fans from their own towns. And the few ones who do weren’t able to raise enough financial resources to compete against the big three.
