Inside a Hidden Italian-Inspired Family Home That Reveals a Gorgeous Central Courtyard (House Tour)

  • Tapping into Western Australian sensitivities, Enclosed House II is a hidden Italian-Inspired family home that evokes a purity and sense of harmony reminiscent of the desert. Seemingly impenetrable, the raw, textural retreat the home provides is achieved through an innovative approach to materiality, light and space.
Tucked away behind a river, the location of the hidden Italian-Inspired family home is one that is immediately desirable, set on a busy street with a strong suburban feel. The design responds directly to the bustling streetscape in the way that the architecture of the home draws on privacy - there is a visceral sense of security and solitude established from arrival.
Upon entering, one is met with a stark walkway with robust textural walls that frame the process of entering. This sets the scene for the earthiness one can expect from the rest of the home. At the end of the entrance is the main living space, which, in a moment of surprise, appears as a large empty void. The space extends to the kitchen and the courtyard and is transformable, eloquently merging the indoor and outdoor due to the intelligent Vitrocsa window systems.
The raw earthiness and connection to land that is felt throughout the hidden Italian-Inspired family home derives from a considered materiality and minimal furniture. There is a reduced spectrum of materials used, seeing a harmonised palette and muted tonality connect seamlessly. Steel and natural materials dominate the interior design, and there is a strong connection to the colours and textures of the Western Australian landscape, specifically the red sand of the outback. Another way this connection is achieved is through using weathered steel, which was watered to create a base rust.
MORQ reimagines the idea of minimalism in the way the hidden Italian-Inspired family home approaches furnishing and details. Rather than fulfilling typical perceptions of minimalism, which can often be somewhat sterile, the approach here has more to do with purity and harmony of the lines that define the space.
Enclosed House II envelopes inhabitants in a calm, soft way and connects them to the robust tonalities and textures of Australia. While retaining a strong sense of privacy, the hidden Italian-Inspired family home invites those who walk through its walls to instead open oneself to appreciate the idea of nature, convalescence and retreat.

I absolutely LOVE this project! As an introvert this warms all corners of my heart. I would be honored to call a place like this home. I can see how its absolute departure from established values of normalcy could cause aversion in many… and I’ll have to look at the comments in a year or so to see if I’m right. But this project def has a community of people who would be enamored… and I’m it’s chairman

It is thrilling to see the work of Morq here. I have been following, loving and referencing their work for a little while now. The firm's website has a very edited amount of images. So I have so far found that the best source to see all the beautiful details is Divisare. So now, on this platform there is video!! Thank you so much to everyone of all the teams at The Local Project and at Morq for collaborating on showing this extraordinary project. Cudos to the contractors and artisans and a big shout out to Vitrocsa who pull off a remarkable sensibility here. I once had a professor of architecture who would say, "The integrity of and architecture is inversely proportional to the width of its molding" it was never truer here. Whoever has not worked in this minimal construction oevre has little idea how painstaking the details are to achieve. So its thanks to a firm like Morq that make it look effortless, like magic. Congratulations !!!!!

This *unexpectedly* reminded me of the old traditional houses of the North and Central of my homeland - Vietnam! My people don't have much, so the "beautiful/glamorous decorations" of our houses would the structure and layout of the house itself! And skylight in the middle of the house (or in some cases of upper class family: _houseS_ ) carries in very important fong sui aspect in traditional Vietnamese architecture.

"Large empty void" are words the architect uses. I guess it also describes why I don't like this one. It doesn't feel like a "home", a place to live. To me it gives quite the distopian building of bleak walls, empty rooms. Maybe the feeling of a modern museum. It definitely feels coherent and "artsy" but I wouldn't want to live in it. Thankfully, I enjoy most other houses shown here on this channel a lot :)

The funniest part of the whole presentation was when they were walking through the empty room (minute 5:40) and he talks about there "being a bit of a misconception about the idea in general of minimalism, because it's often associated with a kind of sterile environment".
Hahahahaha! :) A sterile environment? In this black, dark, empty concrete and steel house? Surely, you jest!
Bet the neighbors love it, though.

I bet there’s a world of warmth within that home that might look dreary or drab at first glance but as soon as I saw the amazing retreat that is it’s more private nooks, I felt the tranquility. This house, although not my taste per se, is absolutely a masterfully designed, or maybe more masterfully refined space that is in perfect harmony with its occupants, the warm red hue being a veteran choice upon reflection. Would love to sit near that fire, swapping stories over wine 😌 🪵🔥🍷📚🧱

In general cool and very graphic, puristic idea, but with several mistakes: too dark inside - light tunnels would help; the courtyard is too small, feels like a jail - more green and water would help; the fireplace is not working - smoke spreads around, cause it is a closed square, no airflow. I think this lot is too small for such a design idea.

It seems that security and privacy were the major objectives of the home owner and therefore also the Architect. In the world we live in it's unfortunately a necessary concern. Variations in design with the same objective could be more marketable. Also, consider a music selection that does not compete with voice of the narrator.

The problem with most architects is they are delusional about their role: architects are NOT artists. This building has a distinct contemporary art installation vibe, not unlike some of the darker works by Miroslaw Balka or Anish Kapoor for example, but it falls terribly short as a home. It's dark, gloomy, bleak, and inhospitable. The shadowy atmosphere it inspires might perhaps be apt for a spa or a contemplation space, but to live in a box of alienating darkness such as this could be emotionally challenging if not depressing. This project does not reflect the intent of a designer to provide an enjoyable space in which people would actually be willing to live, instead, it's a mere representation of the architect's ego.

I found this to be depressing. There are no windows, just internal courtyard with 3 tiny palm trees, and you see no nature at all, all rooms are very dark, all bedrooms have prison-like feeling to them. It's not about the minimalism of it but about lacking views and light. I guess, 'the need for privacy" was taken to its extreme here and i didn't find it appealing at all. However, there were some dramatic shots - i particularly liked how the windows opened to the library 4:32 and the texture of that wall and that tall shower with what looks to be a skylight above 4:40. I even liked that rusting color scheme but overall it was too dark to be enjoyed. I guess I would enjoy visiting this house if it was hosting some sort of an art event (the space is just made for it) and then leaving it.

No nature, no light. Max security prison vibes... I'd be scared to drop the soap in this place

    It looks like a slaughterhouse
It so dark, there is no view to outside surrounding at all
I would not want to live here even if I have money

Wow, this was not at all my vibe. Worst home featured on this channel yet. 😱

Dark sterile house with no light. Terrible music choice. Who is producing these videos recently? It seems like there was a staff change.

EXACTLY! What are these houses they’re doing now?? There always ends up being a push to ultra modern in all these channels. Why?

See how taste is something that varies so much from person to person...This was the most horrible house ever featured in this channel and I believe also in anywhere ever in the whole internet. Actually it doesn't even look like a house but instead a dark dungeon where some multi-billionaire lives and store people that he often torture for self amusement. I can totally see Sundar Pichai living in a place like that making plans to perfect some AI to be more effective on destroying humanity. haha
