    Inconsistent is the best way of putting it. The highs and lows of Star Wars over the past decade has been quite something to experience. From shows that meander until their underwhelming finale to them releasing the best addition to the saga since the Empire Strikes Back like thrice, it hasn't been all bad or all good.

      That's what really frustrates me about Disney era Star Wars, around 75% (being generous) of it has been dull meandering corporate-mandated slop that I'll inevitably forget within a month of watching it, but I find myself compelled to keep sitting through hours of that mediocre content in the hopes I may end up getting something like Andor or The Last Jedi (which I also like)

      I mostly just stick with commentary channels that I know give good takes.
      or do episode reviews to see if i missed anything and seeing if my feelings match up. (like if I didn't think it was as good as it could've been, but turns out I missed something due to not being aware it was tied to some character or political thing I didn't pay attention to. Sort of treating these videos like extra study guides or something)

    The Star Wars fandom has been horrendously toxic for a long time. They bully Jake Llyod who played young Anakin so badly he quit acting in 2001. He was only 12. People have just shifted to "wokeness" to be their new boogeyman whereas, as you guys rightfully point out, it's corporate greed that's hurting the franchise.

      Not true. His Mother recently came out and said his exit from Hollywood was due to turmoil at home (Divorce). Also his mental health issues (schizophrenia) were completely unrelated to Star Wars and are hereditary from his father's side and that he never really heard any of the criticism because she shielded it from him. Most importantly though is that he is still a massive Star Wars fan to this day!

    I'll just be glad that The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Mandalorian Season 1 & 2, and Andor exist. This and MCU after Endgame made me realized that you can be a fan of something without having to eat up every bland dish being shove down your throat.

    I ended up really liking Ahsoka, but I absolutely agree with you that unless you've watched Rebels, it's really hard to get much out of. My husband and I actually groaned when we watched the first episode and realized it was all going to be based on Rebels (we'd tried giving Rebels a shot a few months before, and dropped it after two episodes because like, the first two episodes really are terrible kiddy show fare.) So we decided "fine, we're gonna watch Rebels first", and fortunately by the end I actually really loved Rebels, but yeah. Keeping up with Star Wars shouldn't feel like homework.

    • @treadlightly76
      @treadlightly76 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rebels is rough. You gotta cherry pick episodes and the only good ones are when Darth Maul shows up, world between worlds and Thrawn. And that’s it.
      Got sift through a lot of cave to get that diamond.

    • @audgirlout9830
      @audgirlout9830 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@treadlightly76 admittedly, I did like a lot more of rebels than that, but I also think how much you enjoy it really depends on what you're trying to get out of the series. I absolutely agree that Thrawn, Maul, and the world between worlds were the best parts of the series, without a doubt, and they're also the most interesting parts as far as tying into the greater Star Wars universe. But there ended up being a lot more I loved in the series than I ever expected. The introduction of the inquisitor in season one, literally executing the prior incompetent villains for their failure was a great way to transition the show from Saturday morning cartoon shenanigans to something they wanted you to take more seriously, I absolutely hated Ezra at the beginning but he ended up having a really great arc as he grew up, and Kanan Jarrus is easily my favorite Jedi in the canon, and I'm usually excited for anything that touches on older and weirder connections with the force, so the weird primordial force being who lived near their first base was absolutely something I wanted more of. I also thought they did a really great job with Agent Kallus, his storyline and eventual change of allegiance felt really good. If you've ever played the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars TTRPG, a lot of Rebels ended up feeling like watching a long term campaign play out as a TV show. But I totally get that it wasn't for everyone, and it definitely had weak spots. I'm glad there were some things you were able to enjoy from it regardless!

      I was initially turned off by Rebel due to the art style but a friend convinced me to watch it and I'm really glad I did! It's now probably one of my favorite Star Wars shows and made Ezra among my top Star Wars characters. Maybe I'm just easily entertained but I honestly didn't even mind the silly kids stuff in season 1... 😭 but best believe I was bawling my eyes out by the ends of season 2 and 4.

      It was better than any of the official trilogy, but it's obvious that there was a better story originally there that for some reason Disney decided not to go with. Still when you look at all the behind the scenes problems the film had, it came out remarkably well; certainly one of the few Disney/SW projects I'd spend money on to own.

      Or I don't know The fact that food shows have not been up to par and has been considered mediocre to terrible that people just dropped out of Star wars due to the shows not being as good.
      You can't have one good show in a franchise not only base out of his side character from a movie but also due to the fact that the shows that came before its arrival has not been very good.
      This whole fan is toxic thing. It's kind of dissigious due to the fact that the quality of Star wars has taken a downward dip. And I know people had problems with the prequel trilogy but there were a whole lot of more but there were still many people that like it in the series still had something to build up with such as the TV series.

    You know when we had the Disney Renaissance, where a LOT of 2D animated movies started being greenlit and there were several cool ideas and new stories coming out, like Treasure Planet, The Emperor's New Groove, and other out of the box plots? And how that happened because they were gonna end the 2D branch and fire everyone, so they got a last hurrah to do what they wanted? I was HOPING this was gonna happen with the streaming boom, where they would greenlight wild and cool ideas just to fill their services with content and be competitive. It's SO WEIRD that what happened was that every cool idea has to pitch several seasons or sequels, and then they shove unfinished and half-baked ideas and just. Leave them as is and disappoint every audience they get. Or they are ACTUALLY good but get cancelled, leaving us disappointed yet again. How did that happen?

Like claiming that 'this is the first time a black person... a gay person... a woman... ' even though these things already existed in the universe for a long time. Lando exist, Mace Windu exist, Leia exist, and so on. Signs that the people making it doesnt even watch any star wars. And lets not forget Amandla's cringe disstrack lol. All they have to do is make good stories that doesnt destroy the original lore and promoting it by saying nice things about the show. Pretend to be nice, arent they actors? They insulted the fans, call them names and got surprised when the fans arent fans anymore.

    I am so tired of this rhetoric. People didn't hate TLJ because it "took risks", people hated it because it shat on The Force Awakens and basically scrapped everything that movie set up. You also have to remember that after TFA came out, there were all kinds of theories for where the story would go next, and TLJ pissed all over them. Plus, every time it looked like the film would actually go in an interesting direction, it always pulled back. Holdo being a traitor or even being a secret agent for the First Order? Nah, she's Resistance through and through. Rey joining Kylo and abandoning all concepts of Jedi, Sith, Resistance, and First Order? Nah, she rejects him. You're not really taking risks if you don't go all the way with it.

    I have been a Star Wars fan since late 2015. It is my entire world, and it’s the most at home i’ve ever felt in a fandom. I have made so many friends through Star Wars and I genuinely love the entire franchise (special shoutout to the Jedi games bc those are excellent Star Wars stories that don’t get enough attention). It can be such a wonderful community to be apart of and so many people are very welcoming of newcomers and are able to have civil discussions with other fans about things they disagree on.
    But there are very toxic people who come in and act so hateful and attempt to ruin it for everyone else. These people are grifters and the fandom at large are sick of them coming in and just generally being very moronic and discriminatory. It upsets me so much that they are completely ignorant to the messages of Star Wars and seem to make it their aim to spread hate and toxicity in the name of being a “fan”. These people are not fans. Spreading bigotry and hatred is not a valid form of fan expression or criticism, you’re just being an a*shole.
    I hate that people outside of the community think we are all like that because we’re not. The majority of us speak out against these people and try to make the Star Wars community as welcoming as it can be. At the end of the day, I just want to talk about the thing I love in peace. Idk why that’s too much to ask from some people 😭

    honestly, in a fandom that won't shut the hell up about how women and pocs ruined their franchise, hearing a woman's level-headed critiques of why this franchise is actually so tiring now is very refreshing.
    i would actually go as far to say the opposite is true of what the culture war mob is saying. like you said, star wars CONSISTENTLY fails its poc characters by not giving them interesting/satisfying arcs or pretending they don't exist when fans are bigoted towards them. even the white leading ladies of the franchise such as rey are made two-dimensional by the final movie by making her a palpatine and miraculously giving her the ability to heal mortal wounds as a desperate last plea to get fans to warm to her.
    to those saying "that's just a female power fantasy" all THREE of the sequel trilogy movies were written by dudes! in this case it's not actually women and pocs ruining this franchise just by existing; it's the lack of care towards these characters and ALL characters and stories in this franchise that actually hurt it in the long run. i really liked rey in those first two movies, and to see them just give up on her as well as everyone in the trilogy hurt me sooo bad.
    the weirdest part is that's not even that new for star wars to fail here, and i don't see critiques of the explanation for our beloved queen and girlboss padme's death. apparently she "died of a broken heart" and totally not because of complications in birth right after being force choked. she insists anakin still has good at him, but supposedly doesn't have the will to live to see if she's right or to look after what should ultimately be her (i'm so sorry for this pun) new hope for living; her children. but you're right star wars fans, the original movies were totally perfect with their portrayals of women and the new movies are woke garbage because there's pocs being done dirty instead of only briefly appearing (mace windu) in your galaxy far far away.
    sorry for this long-ass comment i apparently had a lot to say on this franchise i've grown mostly apathetic towards. would love to see actual pocs and women's takes on poc and female representation if this pasty white enby got anything wrong.
    edit: i DID admittedly forget about lando, he is cool and important in the original trilogy. even if he is the only black guy there he DOES have an arc where so many other pocs get nothing or are mostly in the background despite being cool and respected. here's hoping we eventually get a woman of colour in this franchise that people can get behind, because all of them have either had racist attacks on them or their characters have elicited a bit of a "meh" if it isn't that.

      I dont think a lot of people liked the explanation for padme's death anyways but i could be wrong about that. also, are we gonna forget about lando's whole arc in ep5 and his role in 6? and how leia was a badass through and through? and mace windu, while appearing briefly in the PT, was still a character with significance and dignity. i agree that they have been fumbling representation in SW for a while tho.

      is ur point abt her not being able to be a jedi in the end directed at ROTJ or at the fact that Luke got trained and not her? With ROTJ its like they had no time to train her lol there were other things to do, but I don't see why she couldntve been told of her lineage and instructed in the ways of the force the same way luke was. My reasons r: probably so they had a backup in case luke failed, probably because luke was being looked over by obi wan and therefore in closer proximity to the jedi and just more convenient to train, he couldve been stronger in the force than her and therefore more viable, but only one of these is really supported by the movies and that's the second one.

Other than apparently Andor, none of it is even good (I'd say The Mandalorian, what I saw of it, was maybe 5/10, so not bad, but not good either).
      Shadows of the Empire wasn't great but it was fun (I think the Speeder Bike level was actually the best, not the Hoth level); KotOR and KotOR 2 were phenomenal; Rebel Assault 1 & 2 were great; X-Wing: Rogue Squadron was very good; even stuff like the Super Star Wars games were fun.

    Love the video! Great points throughout and I'm also a huge Andor fan myself. I wanted to give some thoughts on some of the stuff said about the sequels (obviously). I had some thoughts on Luke but they were too much so I've put it in a reply 💀
    I gotta disagree with you when it comes to mystifying the force, the point about making older characters more interesting, the point about Holdo and the idea that the directors disagree, which are ultimately small parts of the video but these things matter to me.
    The force was and always has been quite a mystery. We know it allows for powers but we aren't quite sure how it does the things we see it do, where the force comes from, why it has a will, among other things about it. What *was* established in the originals was that certain people could use the force, along with the fact that you could be stronger or weaker in the force than another force user. What was also established was that lineage had a great deal to do with force-sensitivity, or else Luke being Vader's son and Leia his sister wouldn't mean anything. The prequels introduced that the Force had a will, that it could create life in a VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCE, and exactly how sensitivity to the force is measured, but not that it was a bloodline thing. The force was always and always will be a bloodline thing.
    The OT characters are criminally under utilised in TLJ (and TFA but that would require a greek epic to get into). Leia gets barely anything except that she's mad at Poe for something that really isn't justified and that she can force pull herself back to a ship (which I don't have too much of a problem with, more the fact that she 1. survived that long 2. wasn't KILOMETERS away by that point). Chewie gets to be an Uber driver and plays with porgs. What an amazing use of the character. Lando is absent (i wont accept TROS' explanation as a defence bc Rian could do anything and decided not to bring in Lando, instead he has the horny little orange alien and Admiral hair dye). Also they kill Admiral Ackbar just because why not. Couldn't have had him fulfill Holdo's role as the relieving general!!! Han is dead at this point but his death isn't acknowledged by like any of the OT heroes. Wedge is missing. You could argue "oh they're off doing other things" or "why do they matter so much, do you want EVERYONE back?", but my point is that Rian could have done ANYTHING and he decided to do NOTHING.
    Holdo's behaviour was FAR MORE than a miscommunication and the reason she didn't tell anyone isn't explicitly stated in the film to my memory. Later on, Poe just wants to know that there IS a plan at all, telling him that there IS one doesn't endanger anybody.
    Completely agree with the point that TLJ is horrid as a sequel to ANYTHING or the predecessor to a finale.
    On the issue of the sequel trilogy and the opinion that the directors disagree with each other, i feel like nerdonymous made the most logically sound point. To summarise Apocrypha pt 2 for those who havent seen it (pls do): There was no plan, Rian Johnson didn't ruin the non-existent plan and nor did he ruin Abrams' film. The evidence is that the twist of Rey's parents being nobodies was engineered to be paved over (and therefore in my opinion, not very bold, Johnson himself said he didn't mind if JJ did exactly that, and he allowed for it by having the source of the information be unreliable (Kylo Ren)) and he didn't do anything significant with Snoke besides killing him and even then they could have just brought him back from the dead and we know they are willing because of Palpatine's return. He makes a strong case for TLJ being the way that it is due to it trying to preserve the mystery boxes. Actually, JJ thought TLJ was so good he wished he'd wrote it (before his spineless ass saw the backlash and walked back on that to help sell tickets). Overall, TLJ is "bold", but not in a good way. It boldly declares it knows Luke Skywalker, when it clearly doesn't, boldly declares it knows the lore but doesn't, boldly makes changes to what is possible without considering the consequences and so on. The risks it took weren't worth it and not praiseworthy. It's mostly a rehash of ESB and ROTJ respectively. This isn't the film you think it is.

    • @sawcrab2249
      @sawcrab2249 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only older characters the film does anything with is Luke. I think the foundation for his change of heart is poor and unsupported by the original trilogy. Characters' changes of heart should be informed by previously established character traits and decisions and shouldn't come out of left field during a time period that gets glossed over. We are told by TFA and TLJ that Luke Skywalker, the man who, since the first film we ever saw him in, has made it his mission to help those in peril wherever and however he can, the man who left behind all his training and common sense only to fall right into a trap to save his friends, the man who was convinced that the embodiment of tyranny and violence in the galaxy could be saved purely based on the knowledge that he was once a good man, his father, a hero and great friend and who helped end the tyranny of the Empire, would fall to cowardice and mistrust of his own nephew. That level of conviction and dedication to your morals requires some life shattering event to take place in order to be shaken to the degree that we see in TFA and TLJ. We are told that Luke was afraid of Ben Solo turning to the dark side. The Luke that we have been shown would never resort to violence. In the face of the Emperor himself he discarded his weapon because he knew a Jedi was more than that. He knew that a Jedi is a kind, understanding, patient, loyal and unshakeably just. How does he go from that to deciding that murdering his own nephew to prevent his fall as the FIRST course of action? An innocent child is less worthy of redemption than Darth Vader yeah? I don't buy it.

It's not perfect; the dialogue is really weak, several of the characters were bland, and (like most 6-8 episode Disney shows) the pacing desperately needed to be improved. But it's doing more interesting things than most of the other Star Wars content, it's got some cool fight scenes, and I think Lee Jung-jae and Manny Jacinto's characters were some of the most interesting new additions to the Star Wars canon we've had in a while

    As a female star wars fan, I agree with most of your points especially with what happened with Kelly Marie Tran. I just want to add to the conversation by saying a good majority of the star wars community is totally fine with gay characters, the POC characters and new additions to the story. The real thing we're mad about is that we want these shows to be written well instead of rotting our brains with plot armor that makes no sense. The Acolyte for example failed because it presented new ideas that could have been genius if they cared enough to make those ideas make sense. Disney Star wars needs to listen to the fans with valid arguments for once because they shouldn't expect us to be grateful we got something every time they announce a project and/or poke fun at us on the internet saying we're all toxic when some of us are not even that cruel. It's a slap in the face to the people that made this franchise what it is.

I've sort of come to terms with the state of Star Wars as a whole, I'd love for Disney to scale things back, perhaps take a break with this franchise, but I know they are going to keep churning out slop until the sun goes out and there's probably very little we can really do about it. I'm content to just like the stuff I like (e.g. The Last Jedi, Andor, The Mandalorian S1-2, most of the animated stuff, IDK The Acolyte was pretty cool) and let the rest of it fall to the wayside, while also doing my best to ignore the culture war BS merchants and their stupid and/or bigoted commentary.

    condolences about being shown the star wars series in chornological order instead of when they were made 😅
    I pretty much saw them as those VHS versions of the original trilogy with the Leonard Maltin intros, and then I saw the special editions of the original trilogy
    and I think in my experience I kind of liked them all in different ways when I was younger. I think becasue I had access to both versions and one didn't negate the existence of the other and I could choose to go either way. I liked the Special Editions becasue I could see newer cool looking CGI at the time for the stuff that they weren't able to do when they originally filmed it. And if I wasn't in the mood for seeing that, I could just go to the original version. But from what I've come to learn that for other people they didn't have that choice and the original VHS cuts of the movie after they were released in the 90s weren't made avaialble anymore and it was only the special editions that were around as far as the dvd releases and all that. And I think that really stinks and was a shame that people didn't have a choice in cuts for later formats. I'm not sure if the original version cuts were made accessible years later on dvd or bluray, I haven't followed up on that since, mainly going off the feelings of my memories of what I saw from the original vhs cuts and some clips i've seen uploaded to TH-cam that prove that I wasn't crazy and I saw the versions that I grew up with.

    "Mystery Box style storytelling" is very generous since the man himself came out and said he doesn't end his stories. Dude can't write 1/3 of his stories and instead decides to let it vanish into nothing.

    I couldn’t get myself to watch the second episode of acolyte, I tried so hard but after the first episode I was surprised by how much it just didn’t feel like Star Wars at ALL

    Whilst I hate Last Jedi, I can see the quality in the film, but it fundamentally misunderstood Luke Skywalker. It's like if Obi-Wan was a bit of a dick in Empire strikes back

    The get woke go broke part is Disney DEI hires who didn't earn their positions to work on Disney projects.

    I think the Acolyte is not that bad. It's enjoyable for me to watch, although I know it's very flawed. It is much better than some of the other stuff Disney has churned out recently, so it's a win in my books.
