True. However, as I always say, I will not ever reveal the pearls I have seen. That way those places will still be pearls to visit in 1 or 2 decades from now, instead of being trashy tourist overrun alcoholic getting sunburned on the beach, type of places.

@@FacelessJanus So true. When I was on vacation in Germany, an old man showed me something very special but I had to promise never to reveal the location. It was an extremely rare Black Madonna statue, estimated to be from the 14th or 15th century. The chapel it was in was quite unassuming but the inside was very well-kept. It's obviously not advertised and it's not mentioned in any inventory or literature. I'm not religious but it was an awesome experience to be able to see something like that.

You are completely right about the prestine water!
The colder and nutrient deficient water is, the clearer and pale blue it looks. Lack of alges and other microbes. Melting water from the alps typicly give off this beautiful turquise colour.

That was a wonderful video and reaction Joel. After undergrad, I backpacked with a classmate across 17 European countries for several months. The experience was life-changing and extremely positive. That time certainly contributed to developing me into the person that I am today. Moreover, it developed my confidence and independence even further for travelling. You should go for it too! Cheers, John

Choosing only 10 cities in Europe is an impossible task. There are surely thousands of lovely historic cities in Europe. I just got home from a two week tour with a mobile home and made stops in Quedlinburg (D), Pula (CRO), Piran (SLO), Hochosterwitz castle (A), Passau (D), Cesky Krumlov (CZ), Prague (CZ) - crowded with tourists in spite of it being April), Dresden (D) and Berlin (D) - all well worth a visit.
Next trip will cover some new cities, I have over 60 places on my list to visit only in Germany! Then we get to Italy with another long list etc, etc.

Real Top 10 Cities in Europe :
Rome, Luxembourg City, Prague, Athens, Venice, Barcelona, Munich, London, Lucerne, Vienna. Dubrovnik gets the Game of Thrones hype boost but cannot hold a candle to Rome, Luxembourg City or Venice in terms of historical sites not even to Carcassonne City Fortress (France) or Al Hambra (in Spain). Monaco is mostly ugly 1970s skyscrapers with a small tiny mostly unimpressive castle, only really relevant because of all the wealthy people there and the hype generated by that wealth. Vienna is the way more beautiful and bigger version of beautiful Edinburgh.

I've missed in this video the Cities of nothern Europe. I would want to add Oslo the capital of Norway to this list. And Tallinn the Capital of Estonia the historical core with its two parts (lower and upper). You can really see the difference between the normal citiziens and the aristocratic and cleric upper class. While in both parts of the historical city the buildings are beautiful and in good condition you can clearly see that in the inner fortifications the houses get larger and have a more noble appeal.

Dubrovnik is stunning. I remember approaching it via the coastal road on the bus and being in awe. Just check out photos of Stradun, its main road, at night.
I did a holiday a few years ago visiting Mykonos > Athens > Dubrovnik.
Athens is worth a visit for rich history, including The Pantheon and Panathenaic Stadium (where the first Olympic Games took place). However, I found much of the city quite dirty and grotty.

Dubrovnik is even more stunning when you know stories behind every stone (and there is at least one behind every stone). Did you know it was founded on an island? And you can still track (if you see aerial photos) where channel was covered. Do you know the story about the first pharmacy? First quarantine? Slavery ban for traders? Recognizing America? Literature (Drzic, Marulic), Music (Lukacic) invention of double bookkeeping...? Have you tried the Maskeron trial? Lokrum curse? Karaka inventions? Sooooo many legends, secrets...literally every corner has one. You can explore just one monastery for decades. And you won't be able to explore all of it. Because people, their memories and documents are still there. Yet, Americans often come and ask locals: "where do you keep your walls after season ends"? Kindest tip: learn about any destination so you can at least start to appreciate it. Empty, superficial sighting doesn't fulfill memories and souls. Profound knowledge will make profound experience when you materialize expectations. And make ones life much more rich.

    • @Neil_TheShiningMile
      @Neil_TheShiningMile ปีที่แล้ว

@@cetterus I was on holiday there for 4 days; I wasn’t completing a thesis on the city! 😃
You can appreciate the aesthetic beauty of a something without knowing intricate details of its history.
I can admire the beauty of walking into a woodland clearing and seeing the sunbeams of a setting sun glimmer through the branches without the need to know the whether they are sycamore trees or oak trees.
Building a narrative around the place we visit is always good. But sometimes we can get so lost in the detail that forget to step back and just admire something for what it is.

    • @cetterus

Hello Joel. My parents took me on a bus tour round Europe in a week as a young teenager who was good at languages. That was when I first went to Lucerne. There was a trip up Mount Titlis to see where that water came from.
I later went back at 17 to show my friend, who was going round Europe with me by train. We also went to Monaco, but with backpacks we stood out a bit. We went over the hill to a local store for affordable food.
We found you could get sleeper trains north to south to cut costs and see more places in different countries as we had a rail pass for young people for a month.
Apart from wishing I was your age again, I would love to go see some more of these places. I will make do for now with Benidorm Stuff channel as my next video to watch.

2:20 Mountain water is cold and clean, especially in Switzerland.
7:10 Dubrovnik was founded under the name of Rausium (by citizens of the Roman city of Epidaurum, which had been destroyed by Avars and Slaves around 615 AD), which later became Ragusium or Ragusa. The Slavic name of Dubrovnik was first reported around 1189. It was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa (1358-1808), which was a sovereign state since it became independent from the Republic of Venice, but tributary to the Kingdom of Hungary (1358-1458), the Ottoman Empire (1458-1684), the Habsburg kings of Croatia and Hungary (1684-1806), the Napoleonic French Empire and Kingdom of Italy (1806-1808). Napoleon's Marshal Marmont abolished the republic in 1808 to become himself the "Duc de Raguse". In 1813 the people of Ragusa revolted, helped by the British Royal Navy. Austria send troops to help, but occupied then the city itself, keeping Ragusan forces out. The Congress of Vienna acknowledged and legalized the annexation of Ragusa by Habsburg and its integration into the Kingdom of Dalmatia. The city was renamed officially as Dubrovnik after WW I. Some scenes of Game of Thrones were filmed there. It is now flooded by tourists in summer and rather sleepy in winter.

Monaco is on my 'bucket list'. I'd love to go and visit Monaco, although unfortunately I don't speak French. I've never been to a country in which I don't speak the language. While I understand that most people would probably know English to some degree, I just find it a bit awkward, and slightly rude to go to a foreign country and start a conversation in English, without first asking if the person I'm speaking to speaks English. Switzerland is another place on my 'bucket list'. I just haven't decided which city to go and see yet.
But I digress. I'll definitely check out a bit more of Ryan's videos - in fact, that video on the Top 10 places to visit in Scandinavia has me very interested, because I'd love to visit Scandinavia at some point too. It would be helpful, Joel, if you can link to the original video in your reaction videos.

The fairly mild climate with long summer days, large stretches of very fertile farmland thanks to the loess deposits from the last ice age and the glaciers have made Europe very densely populated (in comparison to other stretches of the world) for a long time.
The Mediterranean gave rise to many high cultures over the last three to four thousand years (at least). The trade passed through well established routes from the Mediterranean right up to Iceland and back, as shown by burial gifts among Celts and other ancient cultures. Many of these were made from metals found hundreds to even several thousand kilometers away.
Queue the Himmelsscheibe von Nebra, the Sky disk of Nebra. It is probably one of the oldest astronomical artefacts made of metal still existing today.
While Stonehenge is older, its massive stone construction makes it a lot more resistant to damage.
All of that means that history tends to accumulate treasures of knowledge, art, and architecture the longer it exists and the higher it is valued in the traditions of a region.

A very American video. Charles IV was not a Roman Emperor, London is not the most iconic city in Europe, and Monte Carlo is very, very far from being in the top 10 of European cities. Still, the other choices are all OK - just far from being the only ones. To name another random 10, I'd recommend Budapest, Tallinn, Stockholm, Rome, Vatican City, Venice, Florence, Granada, Krakow and Valletta. I could easily add another 10 if you want. You're right about so much beauty in a small area. Where I live in Europe, if you drive for two hours, you pass through four countries, speaking four different languages, with amazing towns and cities!

I always get annoyed when Americans say Europe isn't diverse enough😅 I just came back from 1 week of Erasmus staff training and there were Greek, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, Polish, Turkish, Slovenian, Romanian, German, and me (Austrian). We all looked and behaved differently, we had different mentalities, political views, religions, music, traditions, and LANGUAGES. Americans only see skin colour and appereance. But even from an appereance standpoint, Europe is diverse. Some of us here in Europe are very dark (like North African-looking), others are very pale and burn red in the sun. We have all possible hair colour shades and heights, from average 1.55m small people to 1.90+m-high men. I had a Croatian in my class who had blonde hair, blue eyes, but he had "East Asian" looking eyes, and he was short (1.65m) and his skin was "dark" like Greek. While my current colleague who is also Croatian is 1.80m (female), black hair, dark eyes, and very pale. And their parents are from the same country! You can't see more mixture than in Europe😅
