- In this episode, Monk solves the case of the murderer who memorised sketches of people in a bar.
Season 5, Episode 1 "Mr. Monk and the Actor": After Michelle Cullman lures Jack Leverett to her apartment for an illicit tryst, Jack becomes furious when he discovers a hidden video camera. Jack and Michelle struggle over the camera, the fight escalates, and Michelle winds up dead. Jack wipes away his fingerprints, grabs the camera, and flees the scene. The next day, Monk and Natalie arrive at Michelle Cullman's apartment to investigate. In addition to Capt. Stottlemeyer and Lt. Disher, there's a new face on the scene: a big-time Hollywood actor named David Ruskin. Ruskin is set to play Monk in an upcoming movie, and he wants to follow Monk around as research for his new role.

Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

Stanley Tucci was so brilliant in this episode it is funny to think he was originally considered to actually play Monk

Let's be honest, Stanley Tucci is brilliant in every role he takes.
What's really funny is that Michael Richards was also considered.
But the funniest thing in retrospect is that anyone but Tony could play that role. Tony IS Monk!

Monk easing down his doppelgänger with “she wouldn’t want this” ends up being a great reflection for the finale, given Monk is put in a similar situation with the correct killer.
On IMDB it is said that Stanley Tucci won an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series" for this episode

@@iganpparamarta8813 You googled Hamlet and didn't find anything? It's the main role of a famous Shakespeare tragedy. The fact that it is a tragedy should tell you it doen't have a fun ending for the main character.

Monk using his Own weakness against the Method actor was brilliant
I love how after Monk has distracted Ruskin and gotten the gun from him, he gets distracted himself and lets him take it back, and then =Ruskin just puts it away and they both forget it for a moment. "The guy" confessing to Michelle's murder was also hilarious.
I love when the scramble fight starts, they both drop to the floor and the two obvious stunt doubles fly into the scene, and its obviously not Tucci and Shaloub until Monk has Not-Monk against the sign with his leg in a quick cut 😂
Imagine how many Monks were on set that day! 😂

monk is sumtotal of everything,the script, the dialogues,the direction,the actors...or else how can every episode be top notch, masterclass!
I thoroughly enjoy seeing someone other than Mr. Monk doing the here's-what-happened segments.

OMG look at the cars in this episode. This scene takes place in a car dealership. It was originally aired in 2006 or 2007. There's a VW Golf Mk4 and Jetta Mk4 and New Beetle in this scene being offerend as almost new cars. I feel old.

Stanley Tucci plays method actor David Ruskin (last name spelling?) In this episode. Producers were making a show/movie based on Monk, Randy and Stotlemyer. Ruskin played Monk's role, but gets so into the roles he becomes obsessed and soon thinks he is them. Hence him dressing and acting just like Monk.
in the episode a movie is being made about one of the cases Monk solved (Mr. Monk and the Astronaut). Stanley Tucci's character is the actor that is supposed to portray Monk in the movie but Tucci's character is a super extreme method actor and always ends up adopting the personalities and habits of the roles he plays (i.e. in one film where he played a drug addict he literally turned into an addict and had to go to rehab). So basically as he tried to embody Monk for the film he started believing he was Monk hence the scene from this clip.

@@alexiswilliamsinc iirc the "fake" monk was an actor who had to play Monk in a movie, so he started to think like him to be fully into the role but ended up thinking he was indeed Monk himself, hence his obsession with trying to solve Trudy's murder case

When he says that Trudy wouldn't want him to kill the guy, it reminded me of the scene from a later episode where the man who made the bomb that killed Trudy is in the hospital and Monk stops the flow of his pain blocker.

@@kimberly11091 Oh, really? I haven't seen many whole episodes, but had assumed the story arc that revealed the answers to Trudy's death unfolded over the last few episodes of the series.

@@TH-camallowedmynametobestolen You're actually right, the identity of Trudy's killer is not revealed until the final episode. It was a long quest, however, and they uncovered several criminals in order to get to the person who ordered Trudy's death. You see, the person who made the bomb that killed her was "just" a random criminal who took his orders from somebody else, a.k.a the person who wanted Trudy dead.

I've been watching this show for a long time now and I realise how dumb and stupid it really is. Their plots become more ridiculous. It's gets dumber and dumber.
Example: Trudy was killed by a car explosion. But her eyes were donated to someone and Monk sees and recognise it immediately. I don't care how good a detective is but there is noway he can identify someone's retina, which is on the back of the eyeballs.
