Your videos are wonderful! I have two thoughts on drums like these: For more versatility, a player might consider a tunable tongue drum. Several manufacturers (Idiopan is one) sell drums with small magnets that can be moved along each tongue to change the tuning so you’re not locked into one scale. Also, if you’d like to sample the sounds of tongue drums or hand pans before investing, there are a number of free apps online that allow you to make similar sounds on a phone or iPad. I’ve downloaded several. Oval Synth, my favorite, allows a great range of scales and tunings.

    Dear Rick,
I loved your recent video about the stick making prep, Rick! Would love to play a pair of your sticks one day! I’m also here to ask you another question. I’m trying to figure out a groove by the great Nate Smith at the moment. The tune is called “Rambo: The Vigilante”. I will put a link of a live performance down below. By the way, the main groove I’m talking about starts after one minute. Just forget about the improvisation at the beginning and that “straight” break groove, but you’ll notice. Everything is going well so far, but I have a little bit of trouble with those ghost notes. I’m still a matched grip player, even though I plan learning traditional grip as an addition in the future. I’m not quite sure what technique to use. I want the ghost notes to be as even and as clean as possible. Even though they play an important role in that phrase, they are played very softly most of the time. At least that is my impression. My question is: What technique am I supposed to use to play those ghost notes so delicately and so quickly at the same time as a matched grip player? I see them as groups of 4 and 3. So should I use some kind of push pull, even though it is tough to play them cleanly at that volume and tempo? Should I try to just play everything with the usual one stroke roll finger technique? Or should I try to only rely on rebound to use that kind of “cheat stroke” technique? I’m confused.

You need to bounce the first few and reinforce the others with your fingers.
