it's complicated when it comes to these massed produced drums. in music theory.....the D major scale--> D, E, F♯, G, A, B, and C♯. But these massed produced makers DO NOT follow that! They label it based on the lowest note on the drum! say you have a 14 notes drum.....it will start on a C.....for 2 octaves. And....the D drum....wil start on a D- for 2 octaves(14 notes)! Basically said, there are no difference in scale. EG: theory.
Hello. As long as you purchased yours through Amazon Prime. Download a tuner on your phone so you can check the notes. In the video, the RED drum is a HLURU.
GM. Yup, it's a HLURU. But I have other tongue drums as well. Honestly, the HLURU is NOT a bad drum. The sounds are acceptable. The great thing about the Amazon tongue drums- they are durable. I don't own one but did play one a while back. It's a great drum.Have nothing bad to say about it. I like the fact that it has wonderful overtones....and a DING! Am planning on making tutorial soon on songs in D Minor..Have a blessed day!
I am a guitarist. Comprehending music thory, when a Cord is sounded that means more than only one sound played at the same moment or withing the movement to sing simoltainiously. I love drums yet, the actual difference between Percussion and String instruments terms and meaning are nwe to me. Will you explain if available, thanx!
A triad is a special type of chord made of three notes: a root, third, and fifth. So said...in music theory...a chord consists of 3 different pitches/notes. A dyads will consist of 2 pitches/notes.a chord can be a movement of the "three" notes that "goes together". EG- strumming or picking on a guitar. The guitar and these tongue drums similarities- they both make sounds through vibration: guitar strings vibrating when plucked/picked or strummed and on the tongue drum- tongues vibrating upon" tapping". In somewhat simple, complicated terms- A string instrument has typically strings and we have to strum, pluck or bow to produce vibrations. Eg-guitar, violin etc.. The percussion family is defined as one part of the instrument being hit together, or with a mallet or stick to create sound. Eg-tongue drum, xylophone piano, cymbals etc..
Both C and D drums appear to be a major scale when the notes in order start with the labelled note. in that case, the D drum has not F but F# and C will not be Cm, but C# making the scale progression for each correct as the drum is labelled.
The factory labeled their drums as they see "fit". There are no quality control when it comes down to these mass produced drums. I see it all the time when my student brought in their tongue drums from Amazon etc D major scale are supposed to have 2 sharps(#). So the best explanation I can and do give them- to just pretend that all the tongues here are the white keys of the piano. Initially, in the beginning- all the mass produced drums are 8 notes(in the very very beginning or as daughter wd say- back in the days). Chinese traditional music is based on a pentatonic scale, which is a five-note scale. The most used pentatonic scale in Chinese music is the gong hexatonic scale, which consists of the notes C, D, E, G, A, and C. When they decided to make bigger drums- they just add the #4(F) and #7(B)
It sounds like that's a real D drum. That means it's made for the D scale. Normally like he was saying a drum marketed as a "D" drum just has numbers which start on the note of D listed as number 1 but still has the C scale which in that case would be D as 1 and E as 2 and then F G A B and back to C and D. But yours starts on D and has D C# and probably E and then F# and then G and then A and then B and then C# and then back to D. So it's an actual D major scale tuned instrument. Major scales have the interval pattern of T T S T T T S. That means a full tone from the first note to the second, then another Tone, then only a Semi-Tone, another Tone, another Tone, another Tone, and then only a Semi-Tone and then back to the original note. So if we start our scale on the note D we must go from D to E skipping over D# because we need a full tone interval in our scale pattern, not just a semi tone. Then we need another full one so while you would think we simply go from E to F it needs to be an F sharp because on the piano the E and F are right next to each other with no black piano keys between and so going from E to F is only a semi-tone and not a full tone. So the scale to that point would look like D, E, F#. Now we need to go to G, but it can't be a G# because that's a full tone difference and we need a semi-tone interval as part of the major scale pattern so we just go to a regular G. Now we need another full tone and that lands us on a regular A. Another one gets us to a regular B. And now we need another full tone, but B and C are right next to each other so we have to reach up to C#. And that completes the D Major scale as... D E F# G A B C# and then a higher D to repeat the scale and so on. So you might wonder why the drum is tuned this way. It makes it easier to play along with songs written with the D scale or you could say songs written in the Key of D or easier for people who more naturally sing in that key to sing along with your instrument. It also allows you to play the chord of D Major which is made up of the notes D F# and A. That chord is impossible to play on a C tuned instrument because the C tuned instrument wouldn't have an F# at all. Now just like how a C tuned drum (having the scale of CDEFGAB) can play A minor (ABCDEFG) easily since neither key has any flats or sharps a D tuned drum (D E F# G A B C#) is you can play the key of B minor also (B C# D E F# G A). So you can play songs written in B minor and D very easily. But it's important to understand that technically you can play any song written in a major or minor key anyway regardless of which key or scale your instrument is tuned to, but you'll have to transpose the song. Luckily by using a numbering system transposition is automatic. So if the song starts 123 which on the C drum would be C D E on your drum it would just be D E F#. It would sound different if you were playing along side a C tuned drum since your 123 is different than his 123, but if you play alone you'd never know the difference because the intervals between the notes are the same since both instruments are tuned with the intervals used in the major scale, just in different keys. So you aren't limited at all by having a D tuned drum. It's just that your starting note is different so you can play F# and C#, but not F natural and C natural whereas with a C tuned drum a person can't play any sharps or flats at all. I hope that explains things without confusing you even more.

I have the same tongue drum. I do not agree with your C and D explanation. C and D nearly almost means C scale and D scale. Your Hluru 14 tone drum has f(4‘), g (5‘), a (6‘), b (7‘), c’ (1), d’ (2), e’ (3), f’ (4), g’ (5), a’ (6), h’ (7), c“ (1“), d“ (2“) e“ (3“). That is true C scale. So it begins with "f".There are also many 15 tones C scale tongue drums and they will beginn with e(3'), f(4') and so on. If it was a D scale, it would begin with g @3' or f#/fis @4' (depending if you have a 14 or 15 tone drum). Please use a chromatic tuner (e.g. soundcorset app for Android) and you will see the difference
And I totally agree with you 100%! In music theory, the D scale(D major) will have 2 #s. I am referring to HOW these mass produced tongue drums are labeled and being sold on Amazon. I played on a drum that one of my student got from Amazon, the #1 tongue is a D, #2 tongue in an E! So these non musical company labeled their drum on which tongue they labeled as #1! In music theory, it’s a C major drum but labeled by factory as a D drum. That’s the confusing part with a lot of these drums that are being sold on Amazon. All said, it’s super confusing because they are a few true D drums but they never said whether it’s a D major or D minor. I only encountered 1 Amazon drum- with a D engraved at the bottom- and it was a D minor.
