  • This is a review of Oddworld: Soulstorm which was developed and published by Oddworld Inhabitants and released in 2021 for PS5, PS4 and PC. Back when this game came out back in April, it was actually free on PlayStation Plus and I got it on day one. Unfortunately it ended up disappointing me due to all of the glitches and general lack of polish it had.
    Since then however, the game has received multiple significant updates, so is replaying it in October going to be different to my initial experience with it? Let's have a look!

    Looking back, my biggest problem was that they built up how much was gonna be in the game, and they added nothing new to the lore. No new species, no new shrykull abilities or lore, no new environments, and Exoddus was made in 9 months and added so much new stuff, and Soulstorm took 7 years and several delays, hell even munch's Oddysee added something and had some variety, soulstorm is my least favorite console game in the series and I've never been more disappointed by a game ever.

      From all what i have heard about it, i will probably never try it myself. I will just keep replaying the original Abe games.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah they definitely overhyped how big this game was going to be. I think it was probably drastically scaled back during development because making a game as ambitious as they wanted to probably would have been way too expensive to develop.
      It is a little bit disappointing that we didn't get to see more creatures. Like it's not even just that there was only a single new species in the game but it's also that some of the ones from Exoddus don't make appearances either. It kinda ends up making Soulstorm feel less important than Abe's Exoddus in a way. The Shrykull is hardly even used in Soulstorm, but yeah it would have been nice to see it get expanded! To be fair Soulstorm does have some new environments, but the main ones are the ones from Abe's Exoddus like Necrum, Slig Barracks, Soulstorm Brewery and the Feeco Depot.
      I personally think that Soulstorm is quite significantly better than Munch's Oddysee and maybe very very slightly better than Stranger's Wrath purely for the fact that it's a gameplay style that I prefer. If we were judging them completely objectively though Stranger's Wrath is probably better. But yeah it is disappointing given how long we were waiting for this to come out!

    • @Ormagodden666
      @Ormagodden666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelPursuit personally I think Stranger's Wrath is leagues above Soulstorm, and maybe it's nostalgia but I much prefer Munch's Oddysee over Soulstorm, there's just something about the game that made it special, because even though you may not like the game you can't tell me it wasn't fun taking a bunch of mudarchers and shooting a slig so much he slides up a wall.

    Sleech being an adult fleech was confirmed in the OWI discord by the executive producer.
    Anyway a lot what you said really makes sense to me! I personally love Soulstorm but to me it is like this foundation for something really great, if they make more games and use it as a starting point the next installment.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's that sort of thing that really irks me about the Oddworld series. So much lore and story information is absent from the games themselves and you have to find stuff out from the producers and stuff. But who's to say if that information is actually accurate? That might have just been their personal take on what the Sleeches are. Unless it's actually stated in the games themselves I don't know if you can consider stuff like that to be 100% canon.
      I ended up really liking Soulstorm too! But I definitely agree with you that it feels like the foundation for something greater. They've got that basis to expand upon now, so I hope the next game really kicks it up a notch!

    Thanks for the in-depth review! Throughout the years I've often looked at the series from afar admiring the artwork and lore, but found many of the games difficult or dated. The only games I've played through are Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath once, and since then prefer to watch an abridged playthrough on youtube 'cause of how dated I find them to be. This review certainly makes Soulstorm look a lot more appealing, but I'm not sure it's enough to pull me away from other games I already own and have yet to start. We'll see.
    Lanning is a pretty interesting person and I hope he somehow manages to bring his creativity to at least one more game, in order to refine the things he tried to do with Soulstorm. If not, I'd love to see him bring his stories to a graphic novel.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem! I feel like the original two games on the PS1 are easily the absolute best in the series in every single way. They might feel dated at first but once you get a feel for it, I'm sure you'd like them! Maybe with Abe's Oddysee though either play it using an emulator or in a way where you can use save states or a rewind function because it can be a little bit unforgiving with it's checkpoints for newcomers. Abe's Exoddus has the quick save feature though so save states are basically baked into the game itself.
      Absolutely play the originals over Soulstorm though. Even though Soulstorm is newer, it's actually feels more dated in a weird way, like it's a lot more clunky and sort of inconsistent than the originals are.
      Lanning is easily one of the most interesting game developers I know of, maybe outside of Hideo Kojima but they're sort of interesting in different ways I guess. I think no matter what happens with the future of the series I'll always respect him for creating Oddworld in the first place. But yeah, I hope the next game is better than this :D I would also be very much up for a graphic novel Oddworld series, especially since I've recently started getting really into graphic novels and manga!

  • @Blazcowitz1943
    @Blazcowitz1943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The most disappointing thing about Soulstorm was how they redid Necrum, especially with their being no Scrab or Paramite vaults. It was nowhere near as interesting or cool as in Exodus. I know why they didn't have them, Lorne Lanning said that they were in Exodus mainly because they didn't have time to make anything new so it was basically a retread of the levels from Odyssey. Maybe so, but those were still my favorite parts of Exodus.
    I heavily agree that the music is a real letdown as well. I don't hate Soulstorm, I generally liked the gameplay mechanics and platforming, but I wonder if it would have been better to put these in a new Abe game set after Exodus rather than in a reimagining of it. Also, it seems weird that in Soulstorm they never expressly say that the Brew is made from bones. They leave the hints around but never clearly say it which strikes me as odd.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree, I actually would go as far as to say that none of the locations in Soulstorm are anywhere near as good as the ones in Exoddus. They didn't really do a very good job with building the universe in Soulstorm and there was practically no lore to be found anywhere. Like we come across Greeters and Sleeches but we don't actually learn anything about them.
      Even though the Scrabs and Paramites were re-used from Oddysee, they still did an awesome job with making those bits in Exoddus stand out, especially with you being able to possess them, that was awesome!
      Yeah I would agree with that for sure. They probably should have just done a straight up remake of Exoddus and then made a brand new game after that. And yeah you're right about the brew! The brew in general doesn't get explained all that well in Soulstorm does it...

    Have you Pixel, or anyone here, ever come across any other games that have anything similar to the Oddworld vibe,? This super evocative sacred/ancient meets industrial tone,? Or the rich and unique world building as the Oddworld games? The world specifically, irrespective of gameplay. These semi-surreal industrial landscapes or the kind of ethereal atmosphere of something like the stockyards or Scrabania? Environments like the amber tinted hazy jungle area in Exodus for example. ?

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm... Nothing springs to mind that exactly matches that. I think that's probably one of the things that makes Oddworld unique! The first thing that sprang to mind is a bit of a silly example but Jak 3 has elements of that ancient civilization mixed with industrial elements, but the vibe is obviously quite a lot different 😂
      If you're looking for something with a much more similar feel to the Oddworld games, have you played INSIDE? If not, I can't recommend it enough, especially for an Oddworld fan. It doesn't have the ancient element, but the natural meets industrial element is definitely there and the gameplay is even fairly similar too!

    I remember something u said about Munchies oddysee (I think) which was that it felt too "video gamey". I cant help but fell the same about this too. Doesn't look like a cimematic platformer, like the original and doesn't have that same feeling, that you could get sucked in and feel really engrossed with the world
    Ps I literally just typed that before you mentioned it at the end 🤣

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that's actually something that Munch's Oddysee and Soulstorm have in common. They aren't as immersive as the original games and it kinda makes them a little bit less interesting because you're more removed from what's happening. They need to dial back on the 'gamey' elements and bring things back to basics a bit for the next game. When you look at things that are clearly somewhat inspired by the Oddworld games like LIMBO or INSIDE, they do this so much better than Soulstorm.

    The music is less melodic and more textural and ambient. I like both, maybe the solution would be - and again maybe it would be constrained by budget - to have the music cycles be longer and go in and out of ambient and melodic and even recede for a while so we feel purely the sounds of the location then return.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is, the original Abe's Exoddus already balanced the mix of ambient and melodic tracks perfectly. The example I used for Feeco Depot is one of the most melodic tracks in the entire game, most of the time it's a lot more in the background, but it makes it hit harder when there is a more traditional soundtrack. The originals even had the element of having a dynamic soundtrack to a certain extent with it changing depending on if you're detected by an enemy or if you've possessed an enemy. I just feel like Soulstorm is really lacking when you compare the two games personally!

    • @silas1414
      @silas1414 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelPursuit Yes this is totally true. I was just listening to the soundtrack of Exodus a day ago and actually realised the same. It's impressive, and was far more dynamic than I remembered and pretty much pulls off what I was talking about. The menu and results music in Soulstorm is great, if maybe a little too somber, but the in-game stuff was definitely lacking. I got a ton of music glitches too and that was playing on the Enhanced Xbox version. Maybe now that they have the responses to NNT and SS and hopefully can work pandemic-free they'll produce something better still in the next game - assuming it happens. Which presumably will be a totally new chapter in the story so will have the advantage of no original version to compare against.
      As far as you know has there been anything confirming a new major game? I'd imagine Soulstorm sales should be clear enough at this point.

  • @ii5139
    @ii5139 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I personally hate that the Mudokons constantly talk now. It's not even funny, to me it feels more like they don't feel...... miserable and fearful for their lifes enough to stay quiet?
    Like in the old games where they would get beaten up randomly by Sligs and it made a lot of sense that they were depressed and quiet - they didn't speak until you directly talk to them and in my head I always though: Of course they would be... "broken", enslaved in a place like this surrounded by dangerous, sadistic creatures with guns. OF COURSE they would be miserable.
    It really gave the old games SO much more atmosphere to like... "feel scared of something". It also made the Sligs appear MUCH more like a real threat and you really have to be careful and quiet around them if you don't want to get beaten up even more.
    But "I'm so bored. I'M SOOOO bored" ??? REALLY?? xD They obviously don't care about anything really......at least that's how it feels for me.
    Oh and about the Sleeches: Honestly- this is all really just my personal opinion and maybe I'm just also very nostalgic about it all, but I was soooo extremely disappointed that these should be the "adult Fleeches"..... and I'm still sooo disappointed.
    I always imagined the Fleeches would just grow in size - and maybe turn into large two-headed crocodile-like creatures. There was an information somewhere in the game that they would be held as pets until they grow too large and get flushed down the toilet or something? SO I thought: These things are growing and who knows HOW big they could actually get?
    So when I saw these.... (and even though I really liked how dark the area was and that it also was kinda scary and activated my cave-diving-claustrophobia xD being SO deep down there-...) yeah...I was disappointed. xD
    I would like to just see them as different species and not related to Fleeches.
    But I really don't hate the new games though - I absolutely love the old ones, but I also really love Soulstorm and I HOPE that there will be more!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do raise some good points there. It makes it a lot less atmospheric when they're constantly talking. They definitely have a bit of a problem with keeping Oddworld consistent with it's tone. They did an amazing job with the first game but it was quite clearly extremely dark, even with the small drops of humour in there, then with the second game they added a ton more comedy into it while still somewhat maintaining the underlying darkness that the original had. Since then though they've never really managed to get the balance right and it always tends to lean too far into the light hearted side of things.
      My opinion on the Sleeches is that it never directly tells us that they are adult Fleeches in the game itself, so therefore they could just be a completely different species. Apparently a developer confirmed that Sleeches are the same as Fleeches but I'm not sure you can just consider the words of one developer as meaning that's a total canon fact. But yeah, I always kinda figured that adult Fleeches would just be absolutely massive versions of what we see in Exoddus.
      The cave area was simultaneously one of my favourite parts of the game and also least favourite. The idea is awesome and it's amazing that it calls back to the temples from the original games. But at the same time there was several areas that either didn't work properly or were extremely tedious to get through.
      I hope there's going to be more after this too!

    No, sorry but in my opinion, even with the updates, I 100 times prefer Stranger's Wrath (both in story telling and gameplay) and I replayed New N Tasty few weeks ago and I still prefer it than Soulstorm (especially for the DLC, Toby escape is a boring joke compared to Alf escape). The game isn't bad, I don't hate it and it's far more playable now but there is still too much wasted potential. To be fair, I understand why they didn't put Scrabs and Paramites, they wanted to focus about the Oddworld society more than the nature (which was the theme of the first title). It's ok but man, why not some ingame Vykkers then ? Glukkons ? Interns ? "naked" Sligs like in Exoddus? Or new original stuff ? The fact you can collect fleeches "poop" but you don't see any fleeches in the game makes it frustrating.
    The feeling of repetitive level design is still a big issue (especially in Soulstorm Brew... I mean WTF is this scam ? It should be the last and most intense and iconic level and the repetitivity of the environnent and level parts are just absolute jokes compared to Exoddus Brew level). For the gameplay, they took the best from Munch's Odyssey but the crafting system has so many useless objects, the gamespeak is still boring, even if I liked the passive/agressive switch system, some Slig weapons are still a mess (using rockets in a wave defense is a big NO for me), the need of money to access to a door to finish a level still a big annoying NO for me.
    About the story, yeah the cutscenes and storytelling are masterpieces but I have some issues : the dark humour that I loved so much in the entire series (even in Munch's Odyssey) GONE, the lack of memorable soundtrack makes even beautiful cutscenes kind of boring. No explaination of with what the soulstorm beer is made, so why NO BONEWERKS ? Abe feels everytime depressing and sad and makes me depress like him sometimes. Where is my energic, curious and blunderer character that I loved so much ? The only moments making my depression gone are the Molluck's Slig moments : seriously, he's by far my favorite character of the game. He's on his own what a good old Oddworld storytelling style feeling is. And the final scene with all the sligs shooting at Glukkons was so good !
    So to conclude for me it's more a : 1- Exoddus ; 2- Odyssey ; 3- Stranger's Wrath ; 4- New N Tasty ; 5- Soulstorm

      Yeah, I actually think back to my ranking of the Oddworld games and wonder what I was even thinking placing Soulstorm above Stranger's Wrath. I definitely got that wrong to be honest. My definitive ranking would probably be this:
      1: Abe's Exoddus
      2: Abe's Oddysee
      3: Stranger's Wrath
      4: New 'n' Tasty
      5: Soulstorm
      6: Munch's Oddysee
      I just realised that's almost exactly the same as your ranking... But it's true! The one minor thing which I might debate is whether Soulstorm is better than New 'n' Tasty. Soulstorm had a lot of brand new content and story elements whereas New 'n' Tasty basically copied Abe's Oddysee 1:1 which makes it slightly less interesting, but at the same time it's a much more polished game than Soulstorm (even if it is still a bit clunky in it's own way). The Game Boy ones would probably be placed between Soulstorm and Munch's Oddysee too if you care about those!
      One of Soulstorm's biggest weaknesses by far is the fact that there's hardly any variety in species you come across. Exoddus felt so much more expanded than Oddysee thanks to all of the locations and creatures you come across and all of the lore attached to them and Soulstorm absolutely fails to replicate that. The cutscenes are by a large margin the single best thing about the entire game but I do agree that the tone is much darker than in the pervious games in a lot of ways. I kinda like that though to be honest haha!

      @@PixelPursuit Thank you for your re-ranking and the response ! That's pleasant ! :)
      About "New N Tasty vs Soulstorm", we should keep in mind that New N Tasty just wanted to be an honest remake of the first title and did well. Soulstorm by the way wanted to be a complete reboot and to feel more like a brand new title. But the fact is good storytelling in a game isn't enough, this is still a platformer game, not a Visual Novel. So I'm more focus about the gameplay and the entertainment feeling. That's why for me, New N Tasty win, even if the game has some issues as well. :)

    Honestly surprised you put this over NnT. I think mathewmatosis got into way too many people's heads. NnT is still much better than SS.

      To be fair I don't think I've ever seen a mathewmatosis video!
      But yeah, I actually really messed up my ranking of this game. Looking back on it I think I just wanted to like it more than I actually did. I would probably rate it below New 'n Tasty but above Munch's Oddysee. I don't know if I would ever bother playing through this again honestly. Maybe in a few years I'll feel like it!

      @@PixelPursuit Putting SS over MO is fair play. MO had issues.
      I just replayed Exoddus earlier this week. In no way does SS measure up to that game. Not even in the same league imo.
      You should check out mathewmatosis's video on NnT tho. Its an extremely important critique on video game remakes. I dont agree with everything he says, sometimes he can nitpick pretty hard, but its a good video.

    Gamespeak is the biggest shame for this game, I really like controlling the different creatures in oddworld, paramites, scrabs, glukkon etc. It's so big a shame that they are gone...That brought my enjoyment to almost zero.
    Also that they ditched sleeches, I loved those.

    • @CaptainPerfect
      @CaptainPerfect 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also yes the music was really crap. Nothing stuck to my mind. As it was almost all ambient

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the things they removed from Abe's Exoddus really makes Soulstorm feel watered down doesn't it... Not only did gamespeak allow you to communicate with all the other inhabitants like that but it also allowed them to give the other Mudokons different emotional states too which gave them more personality.
      I'm going to be 'that guy' now, but I think you mean Fleeches :D Haha! Sleeches are actually in Soulstorm, they're the weird black blobs that chase you in the cave area. But yeah Fleeches are awesome aren't they!
      Totally agree with the music too, there's nothing wrong with having ambient music, especially in areas thick with atmosphere, but there's very few areas like that in Soulstorm and it feels very disjointed when the music doesn't match the level.

    I've recently revisited this game, partially inspired by your review to do so, that maybe the first time I played this game I was maybe too critical, as the first time I played, I strongly disliked Soulstorm.
    Having finished it last night, arghh.. as hard as I tried to enjoy it, I just couldn't. I find the game so infuriatingly designed that I'm sure most sections are designed to p*** you off. I struggle to look back on the game and remember a fun moment or level. It's so upsetting because I am a massive oddworld fan.
    Theres some puzzle sections where im sure the developers judst want you to run through and hope for the best if you make it.. it feels miles off the original games ethos. I'd say this game is 5 at best. Average. They had some good ideas, but they didn't execute it properly here.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with you, the design of Soulstorm is quite weird in the way that it feels quite loose and like there's no official way you're actually supposed to get through certain areas. That kinda sounds like a good idea on paper, like giving you the freedom to tackle obstacles in multiple ways, but then it never really properly gives you enough tools to actually be able to do very much creatively and it results in brute forcing your way through sections which doesn't feel intentional.
      I hope the next Oddworld game is a bit more straight forward and doesn't try to implement a crafting system or dynamic environments or anything. Just a straight cut linear experience probably suits it a lot more. Games like INSIDE show the potential with creating a focused game like that.

    Several things here.
    It's weird you don't call this quite a remake, despite that you also saying that it "reimagines" what Abe's Exoddus is about. After all, that would make it a "reimagining" remake per what you said in your other video about remakes, remasters and ports.
    Sligs with stun clubs? When has this become Ape Escape?
    Your comment about the checkpoints acting as teleporters reminded me of the 2005 game Shadow the Hedgehog, in which its checkpoints act as teleporting pads that you could use to return to a previous checkpoint that you found in a level.
    Double jumps aren't grounded in reality? ;)
    Definitive designs for the Mudokons .

      It's definitely a grey area with this game and I actually can't think of a single other example of a game that's done this. I can think of films that have done it though! It's like how Halloween (2018) is a sequel to Halloween (1978), but at the same time it isn't a remake of Halloween II (1981) which was the original sequel to the first film and instead completely retcons the original sequel and doesn't follow the same plot or anything. So to call Halloween (2018) a remake of Halloween II (1981) would be completely wrong.
      If we take a similar sort of thing with Resident Evil 2 (2019), that is a remake of the original Resident Evil 2 (1998) because it uses the same plot, settings, characters, weapons and several design elements like inventory management, but just modernises it all and changes the camera perspective.
      Soulstorm doesn't use a single level design from Abe's Exoddus, most characters are either completely original or vastly different, the story isn't the same at all and even when the same locations are used they're completely recontexualised to the point where they could be different locations entirely. Plus it adds mechanics like the crafting and removes mechanics like the Mudokon emotions, exploding farts, Scrab, Paramite and Glukkon possession and loads of other stuff.
      Basically, Soulstorm is far too removed from Abe's Exoddus to be considered a remake and it's more so a total retcon.
      Haha, the Oddworld and Ape Escape crossover is confirmed!
      Oh yeah that's true! I forgot all about that in Shadow the Hedgehog! The backtracking in that game was really, really annoying though, whereas here it actually would have been useful :D

    • @RiiViiMedia2424
      @RiiViiMedia2424 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get what you're saying here, but I still feel that this is a more extreme version of the reimagining remake, in that the ideas from the original game are given a wholly new interpretation.
      I don't think that the warp pads were used so much for manual backtracking as they were for returning to a previous area you wouldn't be able to manually. Either way, I was pointing this out to say that the idea has existed before.
      On a side note, I feel that the reason for the more platforming focus of Soulstorm might've been inspired by New n' Tasty with its more dynamic camera.
      (Typed this two times.)
