This video is a really great sales pitch for the Syntakt. Also you got praise from Ivar, the Elektron TH-cam GOAT! That lets you know you are doing something right. Keep up the great work
Wow, your comment made my day, thank you! Will definitely post more jams in the future, currently working on a tune that combines the Syntakt with the MC-101. 😊 Have a great week and holidays!
@@Divadosaurus It's an honor to have you as part of the community, David. You have my word that the cover is gone at 500, it's beginning to get on my nerves too. 😂 Will be posting jams on other grooveboxes too, MC-101 is next to be introduced - screen cover already removed. 😊 Have a great week ahead!
This is a beautiful tune. And I love the fact that in other videos you use both the Syntakt and the MC-101. I own several grooveboxes, and right now my favourites are the MC-707 and the Syntakt. 😸
Really appreciate it! I love the Syntakt, it's such a fun device to use and make music with. I have too many songs ready to be jammed, but need more time to do the video sessions. 😂 I love the sound of the MC-101 but didn't love the interface and workflow, though I'm sure the 707 is better in that regard. I've passed the MC-101 to make room for other gear and I'm going to introduce the MPC and the Push 3 on the channel next year. Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to drop your generous comment!
Such a great track and performance! I read through the comments, it's awesome that you did all the mixing right in the Syntakt. It's my favorite way of using the Elektron boxes too, though I run the stereo outs through some plugins in post. The buildup to 3:30 with the chord progression and all the layered synth sounds was so well done! Did you use the FX track to sidechain stuff to the kick? I really appreciate how the relatively soft kick is so prominent. Also, great sound design, they all sound very original and non-Syntakt, for lack of a better term :D
Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate you taking the time to write this! It's funny how this track turned out, it was originally an idea from my partner in crime, specifically that simple arp at the beginning and then a general idea that that would be the "red thread" of the song as it progresses into "something more massive" that would provoke emotions. (He often comes with vague ideas like that, and I tend to be skeptical at first and then when we just roll with it, it turns out to be pretty great in the end! :D). It wasn't until I started to play with Ctrl+All on the filters that the stuff really came alive for me though. I absolutely love that feature of the Elektron boxes! Thanks also for the comment about the sound design, this is one of the things that I find so rewarding on the Syntakt. Honestly, the preset sounds are not very inspiring, and I build tracks differently on the Syntakt. I tend to just build out an idea with "OK" sounds, rather than the typical preset browsing first. And then I tweak those sounds or replace the underlying machine until it feels right. I honestly don't think I used any sound presets on this song, other than the sound locks on certain percussive elements. To me, this is a testament to the versatility of the Syntakt, because I was one of the strong skeptics about this device when it launched because "it sounded just like a Model:Cycles". I can say now that it doesn't. :) Regarding mixing, as I wrote in the other comment, I try to get to 90% mixed before recording the jam, and I make heavy use of the base filters to keep things in control. I then record via Overbridge, so I still have the luxury of making adjustments afterwards. In this case, the only sidechaining is on track 10, the bass, and I chose to do that in the DAW instead. Indeed, it could have been done via the Analog FX block too, I just didn't in this case for no particular reason. The other "bass" (track 5) was already high passed aggressively because I only wanted the mid-high transients. The kick is actually one of the things I'm most impressed with about the Syntakt, you're right that the kick isn't particularly punchy, yet, it still punches through quite a bit. I actually had to take it *down* several dB in the end! The mixing phase took about 20 minutes, anything more than that and I start to feel miserable about it to be honest. I'd rather just move on with the next song. Thanks again for stopping by, and for subscribing! I've admired your songs for over a year now and always look forward to your jams! Greetings from Sweden. :)
I like these theme ! 😊😊😊 Do tout think it's would be possible to play a piano improvisation with a syntakt prod on stage ? with a complex harmonic structure ?
Thanks so much! Hmm, the limitation the Syntakt has is that it isn't polyphonic. This means that each track can only play one note at a time. This makes complex harmonic structure a bit difficult since you'd need a midi solution to play it across multiple tracks. I know there are ways to do that but I haven't tried it. So I'd probably say that the Digitone would better for something like that since all of its 8 voices can be played on one single track of you want. Hope this helps. Thanks for listening to the music!
I like the song mode, it makes it quick to sketch out a new song idea. You can even make several song ideas and try out different progressions. Yeah, that screen protector is kind of peeling itself off at this point, I should do a timelapse video of it. 😂 Thanks so much for the feedback on the jam!
Personally it's the total opposite! I find that the truly rewarding part is creating the song and jamming on the Syntakt. It's surprisingly straightforward to mix a song made on the Syntakt, the base filters make it easy to get to a 90% mixed song right away. 😊 Really appreciate the feedback on the song!
I think it’s awesome you got it mixed well enough in the box. The main reason I’d want all the stems as audio in abPC based DAW, is for all the expansive possibilities with fx and additional VSTi/audio accompaniments, not to mention the ability to do edits on the stems which would liven everything up to a fantastic degree.
@@ghfjfghjasdfasdf oh yeah, I agree that if you use the DAW creatively, things can really come alive! For these types of live jams, I feel like that would be cheating somewhat, but I suppose it's all about the artistic output in the end so I might consider doing more post-jam production in the future. What I would probably consider is releasing jams like this separately from those more "produced" songs though, that way the jam can still remain authentic. The thing I miss the most about these jams is samples, I normally use samples for texture and atmosphere in my music. That's what I'd add first in a more "final" version of a song. 😊
Copy that. Well said and I understand completely. To your credit, at least you finished a work. I have a hard time finishing anything because there’s always something to add. ; D
@@ghfjfghjasdfasdf I've been the exact same for the past two years! Honestly, this is a big part of why I'm posting jams on this channel now, and why I chose the Syntakt, because it's a way for me to commit to the process of actually getting to the finish line. I'm far from happy with the mix, but focusing on mixing kills my creativity, so I'd rather publish and move on to the next one. If I end up making a real banger, I can always go back and make a better mix. I used to make music from scratch in the DAW (and still do at times), but there I end up making small tweaks all the time. I highly recommend this hybrid workflow if your goal is to actually finish your tracks. 😊
5 patterns! There are only subtle changes between each patten, mostly the chord progression and the energy of each drum track. You can actually see the pattern changes if you pay close attention to the screen. It starts with A03, which is the intro, then progresses to A04, which is the first bass/chord progression, then A05 which is the full chord progression. In A06, track 3 is repurposed to a percussion drum. Then A07 is the outtro, which is really just a copy of A06. Thanks for listening!
You won't have to see the screen cover anymore, promise! Thanks so much for the feedback on the jam. 🙏 Honestly, it feels like making music on the Syntakt is so quick, but I do suspect that it's partially because I lose the track of time when jamming on it because it's so much fun. I can say that I've never produced more songs at a faster rate ever before and I attribute it to the workflow of the Syntakt. 🔥 In terms of prep for the final jam, I spent maybe an hour rehearsing the different knob twists and transitions after making the pattern sequence using Song Mode. Thanks for listening! More jams soon.

My screen thing is almost identical just peel what you think of the new synth machines I have been loving them they make the synthesis sound more useful anyway great stuff peace
I love the new machines, they are admittedly bread and butter synth sounds but that's exactly what I thought was missing on the Syntakt before the 1.20 update. I made a video comparing the Syntakt against the Digitone where I talk about this update among other things, feel free to check it out! Yeah, that screen protector has to go, I was thinking I'd wait until 500 subs just for fun but that could take ages. 😂 Thanks for watching!
Haha, it was literally -20°C when recording the jam! But in all honesty, I was just adding some Christmas flair to the video. 😂 Thank for listening to the jam, happy new year!
Anyone can tell the difference in syntakt and digitakt... is the syntakt worth the extra money? Nice video... in a few days hopefully I will own one. :-)
The Digitakt is sample-based and the Syntakt is synthesis-based, so it really comes down to which one you prefer. It's really hard to choose, but one advantage the Syntakt has is of course the higher track count. But then again you could resample a couple of tracks into a loop played on the Digitakt in just one track. My recommendation would be to buy either of them used, evaluate, and switch of you're not happy with it.
@@SsgtHolland Hey, thanks for the sub! I realize I said the wrong name of the jam where the cover sheet is removed, it's called Fjord. But anyway, point taken and we have removed all of them immediately since then. 😊
