  • Today I'm making Camper Jacks for the DIY Truck Camper Project. In this video I'll show how I created custom DIY camper jacks from standard harbor freight 3,500lb trailer jacks and some telescoping tubing. I'll show it in use and at the end I'll talk about what is to come in the next part of this DIY Truck Camper / Utility Shell project!
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!

    Two steel sawhorses made from 2 1/2 inch box with 2 inch slide inside so they can be adjusted to the width of what you are building works great. Set the camper down on them when painting or storing it. Ive had mine for 20 plus years.

      That actually what I did with the trailer jack on my DIY Travel Trailer build. But for this one I’ll probably leave the handles so it’ll be easier to count and keep it all even as I raise it.

    As always you are very impressive. Great build. I live in a 5th wheel and I wish it was build half as good as your camper. Iv seen prices on pickup bed campers and yours is going to be worth a lot when your done. Would be cool to build a rectangle box out of 4x4s and make a stand for it with a set of steps on it to place the camper on when not in use so you wouldn't have to lower it clear to the ground. Anyway job and am looking forward to part 3.

    You might consider a ring at the bottom of each jack leg so you can run ratchet straps from foot to foot to keep them from splaying out under full load.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The ring is a good idea…. I had considered when it is stored for long periods to add a few straps in an X fashion on two axis to give it a lot more stability. And the ring would make the connections way easier 😊🙏

    Crazy thought: Put a sealed 4-pin electrical connector inside the jack sockets, then mount a stepper motor on the jack on the opposite side from the handle. With a smallish battery and an Arduino you could push one button after the jacks are on to lift and/or level the camper instead of having to use two people or walking back and forth to each corner.

    As full-time RVers, we see a lot of different rigs in our travels. We don't see a lot of truck campers, but one that sticks in my memory was a truck with a camper on it, pulling a trailer with a boat. So his total length wasn't much, he only had one point of articulation, and yet he had his means of transport, his fishing boat, and his home all together. He pulled into an empty site, dropped the boat trailer, pulled into his own site, raised the camper off the truck, pulled the truck out of the way, lowered the camper to a more stable and usable position, and re-hitched the boat trailer to the truck so he could take his boat out on the nearby reservoir. Pretty sweet setup, though definitely not what we'd want.

    Regarding stability... this is with the frame only. After the camper is fully built, I wonder if this will be adequately stable. Also I'd be wanting to park on a solid surface rather than the dirt, unless you plan to put some boards or something under the feet.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When it is fully built out and in a stored position it will be upon concrete. Not here…this is just where I build things. And regarding stability, it will be lowered farther down and also a few ratchet straps in an ‘X’ on two intersecting axis will keep it very solid.

      When it is in stored format on the legs I will add ratchet straps in an X pattern which will stabilize it greatly. It will also be much lower.
      But the truth is that I don’t plan to take it out when camping. It’ll only be stored on the ground at home and stability won’t be an issue as I will also crib underneath it.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did for a bit. But my original intent was for it to be more of a ‘work shell’ to be able to carry tools and do offsite jobs…. But also double as a crude minimalist camper. Of course it’s not kinda trending more camper and less work shell. But ultimately I didn’t want it to be a super high wind sail which is why I kept that are more to be for store space, etc

    When you have the outside skin on, what's your plan for retaining the jack stands to the camper? will you leave them accessible from the inside? you had talked about sealing the insides with a steel square cap, but i think you'll have to leave a hole for the hitch pins.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The exterior cabinet doors will allow access to that are where the retainer pins go.

  • @brucejeppesen1237

    Great idea. I just bought a used pop-up camper that only has 3 stands and so looking to rebuild the camper and make stands that are safe. Have 1 question though. On the inside where the stands slide into the camper corner you put that small bolt guessing so that the stand can't slide out of the pocket. How are you going to be able to access that once it is completed or are you not going to have anything holding the stand into the pocket? Thanks for the excellent video and explanation of your build.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ll live that open within an interior cabinet… or the exterior cabinet doors. Not sure which but there will be access. It’s a fluid project that’s still partly rattling around in my head😂🤪

      Thank you Doug! I appreciate that!
      As for storing the legs for travel. I think it will be for storage at the house. As I won’t be removing it from the truck for most trips. But then again, I could see the advantage of being able to remove it and lower closer tot eh ground for longer camping trips and then not having to haul it around for drives.

    What's the cab over for, looks pretty small.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s more for just added space and to have a longer base for a roof rack. The original thought on this camper is that it would be more of an offsite job ‘work shell’ but with a fold out bed for simple camping. So the cab over was never really meant for sleeping or anything like that.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      As mentioned by the other comments….. trailer towing access for turning is a big one… and I wanted more it not so big. Which is why I don’t have it super high like a pure truck camper would be. More a work shell that I can camp in too

  • @Siskiyous6

    You can not lower it to the ground or close? I often camp for a week or two in one place, you want to be able to get it down near the ground. I think you practiced a false economy here.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m sorry, I don’t follow. ‘Practiced a false economy’?
      I said I don’t plan to take it out of thr truck when I use it. This is so I can take it out at home for storage purposes. The long legs will lower down to where I can crib it with some wood and saw horses and then switchout for the shorter leg extensions. But it still isn’t intended to go to the ground level.
      Hope that made sense😊👍

    Not sure what your plans are for tie downs could you build some anchors to fit the jack holes in the camper when the jacks are not installed?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it were narrower then yes…. But I think I’m going to locate them under the side parts to tie down to the corner tie downs on the bed of the truck.

      Haha….well there won’t be either inside. This was originally intended to be a work shell that could also be camped in. But slightly more than just bare bones utilitarian.
      Maybe a shower outdoors but not inside. As for the crapper…. Well, even the trees need fertilizing 😂

  • @Dave--FkTheDeepstate

    Cool build, thanks.
    I remember your nice, camper trailer build... and was wondering if this truck camper would be used shorter camping trips? With fewer people? Easier to drive w/o a trailer?
    Or can you bring both to accommodate more people?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’ll be for both. Primarily I want it as a lockable storage for when I do offsite jobs to keep tools, etc locked up if I need to stop at a store.
      But also for camping trips with the trailer for the same function. And to have secure weather proof storage for junk that normally just rests in the truck bed.
      But also when I do a solo elk/deer trip. I’ll have a bed with me wherever I park😊
