- Today is Part 4 of the DIY Truck Camper / Utility Shell Project. In the video I'll show how I welded the aluminum door frame, added hardware, hinges, insulation, aluminum 'skin' and installed the rear access door on the truck camper.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!
-Joe
Also, a big thank you to Industrial Metal Supply for partnering with me on this project and supplying the metal that you'll see me using along the way!

Thank you Joe for the kind words about Dad. He would always remind us to check out what you were up to and shared in many ideas/projects you had. He was a great man. Next time you're in Utah let me know, I'd love to treat you and your family to lunch. Maybe a Firehouse tour. Thanks again Joe, you are a class act sir.
Your dad was an incredible man and you kids and his grandkids are proof of the wonderful legacy he’s left. I know he’s looking down warmly upon all his Drew family😊🙏
Thank you so much for the dedication/tribute Joe. He loved corresponding with you and watching what you’re up too. You’re definitely a kindred spirit ❤.
He was also very proud of you & everything you’ve done. You absolutely are an honorary Drew 😁.
Well it was the least I could do. I so appreciated chatting with him over the years, hearing all of his ideas and also hearing him dote on his kids and grandkids! Your dad was a special man and I know he is looking down on his family with so much love!
Just a suggestion: You could put a strip of weatherproof LED tape...or even a battery powered LED bar...in the recess above the door to have lighting to get up/in & down/out at night.
Some of the battery powered bars only come on at night and have motion activation and can be recharged easily with USB power.
My sincere condolences for the loss of your friend and to his family. He sounds like he was a really awesome guy.
As a professional fabricator myself, your attention to detail is fantastic! Job well done!!!
You’re an absolute machine Joe! Is there anything you can’t do? I’m in constant awe of your fabrication skills and your ability to take on any challenge! And that scenery! Stunning. Keep’em coming Joe.
Mr. Joe, I am happy to say that you did a awesome job on your work/camping storage unit. It looks great just like all of your other projects that you have done on TH-cam. The pictures that you showed looks like you had a very good family time, and I am happy to say God has blessed you and your family. I am also sorry that you lost a friend and longtime subscriber. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)

Love the thumbnail picture of my backyard with you in it. Grandiose Grand it is ❤
Well then your backyard is absolutely gorgeous! 😊👍
@@homesteadonomics indeed it is. Dream came true ❤️👌✨Thanks for visiting, and for your wonderful videos 😊❤️
Joe, camper looks awesome! condolences to Lee Drew's family and friends.
The camper is way cool! Good job. Also thanks for acknowledging a good man.
Amazing craftsmanship. I wish someone would sell a camper top with this quality. Thanks.
What a lovely dedication to Lee Drew.
Loved hearing the door click each time you shut it. Nice work.
This is the very subject that I've been waiting on, going back and forth on what type of door to use on my build, security is the main concern, Appreciate the videos!
Glad this was pertinent to your build! I’m very happy with how it came out…..BUT, depending on the size of your build I’d also look on eBay or used sites for RV doors. That’s what I used on my travel trailer project and was pretty much a turn key install and I didn’t have to finagle with making that large hand lockset fit….because one was already installed🤪
Beautiful work diy daddy!
I'm really enjoying this build Joe (along with every project you do). You have been a real DIY inspiration for me on all your projects. I love your perspective on self sustained living. Thank you!
That’s awesome and I’m so glad to hear! Thank YOU for the kind words😊🙏. Hearing folks be inspired is part of why I put these videos out!
What a Great video.....especially like the family and travel pix (and of course, the truck camper) 😍
Glad you enjoyed it Mmx3😊🙏
That turned out great! It is better than anything you can buy now, for sure!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Very informative and very entertaining.
You are so professional! All is fine beautiful work!
Thank you!
Beautiful project! Love the craftsmanship. Very clean looking
Thank you very much!
Dude you can really build! Beautiful fantastic job!.
Beautiful job Joe! Can't wait to see the next video! God Bless y'all!
Thank you! That’s very kind of you😊🙏
That camper / work shell is turning out great!! Thanks for sharing. Nice to do a deduction to your Friend/ fan!!
🙏🏻👍🏻😎
Your product is far better than those by large companies. I think your 'OCD' and love for work made the difference.
Well done . It looks amazing
Macanudo ....
Thank you Mike!
Nice hat, Wyoming!👍
Nice. Love the build and the plan you have for it.
I love it when a plan comes together.
Me too!😊🙏
Congratulations.You've done your best work
Looks good! I like the thought of the butyl putty around the screws for added water sealing around the hinges! Great video!
Your project is turning out amazing, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend ❤️
It turned out really nice. Looks professionally done. 👍.
The trip must have been a blast. Beautiful scenery up there. You should visit Death Valley,. My most favorite place on earth.
That thing is beautiful. Doors are hard, nice work!
Awesome series...stumbled onto this while researching a truck bed liner and your skills are amazing!!! Look forward to more.
Well done!
I really like these builds last forever builds truly amazing
So great!
Another awesome project brother... Look's good keep it up brother.
Joe that picture of truck @ 1:33 reminded me of when i camped in my father in laws property out in Wyoming a couple of times, sage brush for miles beautiful country but you could depend on that wind wiping up in the afternoon, lol. Thanks for Sharing and also sharing the dedication to your friend. God Bless.
Camper looking really good. The cab over would work for carrying bedding and spare clothing. R.I.P. Lee.
Very nice job. Great
Thank you!
Hey uncle Joe looks really good that Utah trip looks fun to
Nice video with a lot of useful content. I like that you consider future maintenance or repair in your design and assembly.
Great progress, Joe. Plenty of hinges on 'er for sure!
Very nice job!
Thank you!
I watched the short before this video. I thought the places you visited were near, I was very wrong. I really like the pop-up top. Have good days!
The door fabrication looks fine in every way. :) Wish I could make a trip like you and the family made. But, it's just not in the cards.
NICE JOB!! EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP!
That thing looks absolutely amazing!
Belle vidéo respect
Salut de Suisse
Great video. Thank you very much.
Thank you sir!!! God Bless!!!
Install a solar power for a small a/c unit it will be awesome.
There will be solar on the from cabover section in the future. But probably not AC unit😊👍
just thought...was a solid stainless piano hinge ever a consideration for the door instead of several hinges?
At first, I didn't think I would like the aluminum look.
It really looks good though.
Nice Joe.
Merci pour la vidéo,, from SWITZERLAND
Fantastic
Great works Brother
You are a real craftsman. I'm waiting for you to build an airplane, and gyroplane. I know you could !
You use the VHB tape on the camper skins, could it be used to hold a roof top carrier on the camper at highway speeds ? How does the 3M VHB tape compare with EternaBond tape ? Do you have any plans for a roof top carrier to support a solar panel and perhaps a solar water heater ?
Looks great
Amazing job!
Great work.
Great job congrats 👏👏👏
Got any plans related to security? Just going to go with the old hasp and padlock?
For the door itself? It’s got a lock in the RV latch…which isn’t bombproof for sure…haha. The outside compartment doors will ultimately be eliminated as entry points once the tool compartments get built… so there won’t be access via those. But I don’t know really for sure. So I’m definitely open to ideas too if you don’t mind throwing them my way.😊👍
Easy subscribe from me. Dude you're beyond talented.
Very nice.
I really have enjoyed following this build. I'd love to see the inside features, will that be next?
Another great episode in your series. Question, in your next installment can you show if access ladder is folded up with the tale gate closed? From the camera angle I cannot determine if there is sufficient room to close the gate with the ladder attached.
Great photos of your family and your road trip. Thanks for sharing them with us. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather. Peace brother
My thoughts to Lee and his family.
Looks grate so where do i places my order for one? Lol. Was it hard to learn to weld aluminum?
Thank you! And yes it does take more time to getting the hang of aluminum versus steel which is easier to get a good weld, in my opinion. Which is why I did the main frame out of steel. But for smaller projects like this door I find it worth the extra hassle.
Nice! Thanks.
If someone closes your tailgate will you be able to get out?
I’ve got some ideas that I’ll talk about when I get to working on the interior and have more of the camping aspect in mind.😊👍
Awesome build!
Do you have a step to make the jump into the camper?
Like the hat. Would have been nice to connect while you were up this way. The build looks good. What boot you sporting by the way? I been wearing Danners for quite a while because I like how the slip in and stay snug.
Craftsmanship is so good, would have preferred an angle shape above back door instead of square.
Very nice dedication Joe! Sorry for the loss of your friend.
Do you plan to create some type of lock to lock the tailgate from being closed? It would be a bad situation for some punk to quietly close your tailgate while y'all were closed inside the camper.
🙏 good choice
5:37 Beauty of a job here dude! buuuut..sorry to be the bearer of bad news fella... If you've used stainless steel hardware for those hinges and such without anti-seize (thought I saw blue locktite)...you're likely never going to be able to remove them without breaking most of them. SS hardware generally will gall when you go to reverse it off. Hopefully you get lucky.
This thing is turning out great! I do have a question about something that I may have missed. How do you secure the camper to the truck?
Noticed you’re using an aluminum spool gun on the door. What was the reasoning for doing the camper frame out of steel when you could’ve used that spool gun and done it out of aluminum?
Mostly just because steel is more forgiving to get good welds and I’m more confident with that structurally speaking. Getting good penetrating welds with aluminum is a little more tricky and if no done correctly can result in welds that will weaken easily with vibration. So for smaller projects and non structural things I’m more confident with the spool gun. But for the large framing it’s just more of a comfort factor.
Additionally when considering weight, it actually isn’t all that much when you consider the 14/16ga steel I used versus the 1/8” thick wall aluminum tubing I would use.
But eventually I’ll start doing larger things out of aluminum😊👍
Nice work, brother. Curious how much the camper weights? Thanks!
Great Job Joe. Loving it. What settings do you use for welding the Alu? And do you use gas to weld the Alu? You make it look so simple.
you might want to put a cover on the part were it latches as someone could use a doorslip to open it
What happens if some A-hole flips your tailgate up when you're in there?
I’ll address that when I do the interior part and am focused on the sleeping/camping use of it. But I got a couple ideas😊👍
@homesteadonomics Looks like a sweet build, but in all honesty I saw that as a safety issue, please take it seriously too.
@@wakeupandbord I have seriously thought about it. The window allows for had access to the tailgate handle, i also will have an extension post/bar that extended to negate the tailgate from being closed…. Which will be held by a pin accessible from the inside. But that will be addressed when I work on the interior parts as the camping/sleeping aspect will be in mind. Thanks for checking it out😊🙏
I’ve been building something similar for my truck for about a year…on paper. I overthink things.
That said, have you thought about how to get out of the inside if by chance someone closed the tailgate with you inside? Can you reach the handle on the tailgate from the inside through that baggage door on the right rear?
Hi man! That is an absolutely gorgeous door you made. I have a couple of questions: 1. What is the material of the door frame? IS it aluminum? 2. What kind of welder do use to weld this aluminum frame? Thank you!
I have a quick question - when the tailgate ladder is up (folded in place) does the tailgate still close with the camper in the bed? Hard to tell in the video- but it looks like the camper shell is pretty flush with the end of the truck bed.
I would replace the foam around the handle with some rigid pvc foam board
🐐🐐🐐🐐@8:29 Goats!!!! 🐐🐐🐐🐐
amazing camper, I think it will fit my truck :) lol.
Wow! This is an awesome Build! This by far, as a DIY? It looks so professional and well thought out! Are you taking orders? I want to be the first one ☝️.
Can you close your trail gate?
Yep! But with the ladder I’m going to need to have a tighter strap….as there is space when closed, it’s only about 3/8”. So currently I just store the ladder under one side. But it’ll be something I address in a future video
Why is the inside of the camper a mystery?
👍👍
😊🙏
Merci !
