Awesome! But maybe it’s too much to ask for, can you include a tutorial how to attach an argon gas to the welder with the neede attachments? Thanks again.
I have a video I filmed a couple of years ago. th-cam.com/video/lkS1-k8KKWQ/w-d-xo.html at 8min 34s - I show how to assemble the argon and attaching the hose to the machine. I did say that argon is not absolutely necessary for microwelding permanent jewelry. However, having argon is better and helps with fabrication, when you are welding thicker gauge components.
I have seen the panel with 5 working patterns AU, Co-Cr, Hybrid, Titan Ortho if you are just using it woth precious metals for permanent jewelry which is preferred? thank you
I've left mine on for a long time and it doesn't heat up or change anything. Mind you, I don't like leaving things on and walking away if I know I'm going to leave for a while - just a waste of electricity and not great for the environment. It has nothing to do with the machine heating or working poorly, cuz I don't see a difference.
I have this machine, I just wanted to know if there is a sheet to tell you what watts to use for each gauge of a jump ring? and should we change the watts for 925 sterling silver and gold filled?
I have created this sheet myself. I have exactly what you're referring to on my website - you can print it, if you wish: stonesandfindings.com/free-resources-page-pj-jewelry-making-information/optimal-power-setting-for-micro-welding/
Wow...Thank you so much... Ive been super hesitant on using my machine just because it's very intimidating and you made the process so seamless! Again...Thank you!
Yes, I used 0.5mm. You can also use the finer for thicker projects, but know that you will have to do lots of welding (line of dots) all the way around. The best thing to do is to try it out and test how secure it is.
you're welcome! Yes, I've tried it with gold filled and it works perfectly fine. The spot is so small that you don't notice any of the metal underneath. Often factories use this and then re-plate the entire chain to give it shine and complete coverage. However I don't feel this is necessary. I make and sell my gold filled soldering without final plating and my customers seem happy with the results.
Yes, absolutely. The screen can be upgraded to the microscope or an ADL screen - wider screen and 5x magnification (both are just connection plug-ins, like the original small screen that comes standard with the machine)
I do not have to press a button. After you press play and clip the grounding clip onto the piece (say the side of a jump ring), it automatically zaps once the electrode (the little needle) touches the metal that is connected to the ground.
Goodness, I wish there was. I had been looking for one that has this kind of precision for a long time but have not! I was enamoured by the laser welder, but it was almost $50k, so this is a bargain. This is a great question for the community - if you know of one that is cheaper, with almost the same level of precision, please let us know below!
I set the weld power to 7.5w - I don't have a timing option. It touches and just welds. The electrode removes itself from the surface. It is a split second.
Hi, Do you use the diamond disk to clean the electrode provided by Orion? Or do you use a "sanding disk"? If sanding disk, what grit and is this available readily. Thanks in advance.
I used the diamond sanding disk, but I have also used regular jewelry sanding disk cuz that's what I had handy. The rough grit is the best. You don't need it smooth, just sharpened to a point. Fine grit will just take you longer, but still works.
Love your videos! So helpful! i’m using 3.3 mm jump rings with the thickness of 0.65 mm sterling silver. What setting (watts ) should I be using to weld split ring closed?
Hi! 0.65mm is 22ga. You should try 5-7.5w, starting with higher wattage and then lowering it as you master the position and touch of welding. Very important to check to make sure both sides of the ring are touch and the electrode is touching in the middle of the seam.
You would cut out oxidisation by using pure Argon, same as T.I.G. welding. Just a friendly suggestion, I am purchasing this machine but with the magnified eye pieces instead of the screen, I'll definitely use Argon as for me that's standard to use a shielding gas. 👍🏴
Hi John, Thanks for the note. I own the argon gas and performed a separate review on how well it cuts out oxidization when welding jewelry pieces. The magnified scope is definitely a great tool. I loved using it.
The polishing gun is actually a dremel tool. You can get that at Home Depot and online inexpensively (whole set for $100, that includes 20-30 grinding/polishing bits).
My machine came with a copper tipped alligator clip and a silver tipped alligator clip.. does it matter which one is used based on the metal you’re welding?
No it doesn't matter. The clip is just there to conduct the electricity. If you are welding a lot, or just want convenience, grounded pliers are the best tool! You don't need the alligator clip - the pliers plug right into the machine and it will allow you to hold the metal easily and with more control. This is what I am referring to: stonesandfindings.com/product/tx041-orion-grounded-precision-plier-for-permanent-jewelry/
Most of the jump rings I used to weld while filming are gold filled - unless I specifically say they are solid gold (I have filmed a few videos to demonstrate welding different metals)
We carry 3 mm jumprings. It is a matter of the thickness, too. If you are unable to find small enough jump rings, I would cut off parts and bend it slightly. I have done so in the past.
Thanks for your video! When trying to weld a .5mm jump ring, with the sides touching - do you recommend pointing the Electrode straight down where the two sides meet at the seam? And 3 or 4w? 3w doesn’t seem to weld completely and 4 or 5w is a hit or miss - sometimes it blows. TIA!!!
I point directly to where the the sides meet at seam. Please note that they have to be really touching, otherwise it does blow and the ring actually recedes. If your electrode is very thin, try to touch at the side of the point, so there's a bit more contact area. It takes a bit of practice and it is hit or miss at the beginning. But keep with it. Eventually it gets much easier.
I’d like to make permanent bracelets. Is this machine a good option. Do you always have to use a jump ring, what if I wanted to weld together a box chain? I would not be able to get a jumping through this..
This is exactly the machine that boutiques that offer permanent bracelets use. Most of them do not bother with the screen protector because it is awkward to put your hand under. The operator wears sun glasses with uv protection. As for not using the jumpring - it is not necessary. I have welded together screws, eye glass frames....all without jumprings. However, I have not yet tried box chain to box chain. I have done box chain to ring and it worked perfectly.
just try it out and see. If you're welding tiny jumprings, you want the smallest. If you're welding washers and screws (which I've done and repaired a bunch of household utensils), then you want something bigger. They're inexpensive and you can get a mixed range in one package
I have a detailed video on argon gas in this playlist. I . don't know how I can share it in comments, but please search for it. If you can't find it, please email me: dana@stonesandfindings.com and I'll share it there. Thanks
Is training required or any other form of qualification in order to purchase the equipment? Is it safe to weld onto my ankle so that I can avoid a clasp?
No training is required, tho it may take a bit of practice to master - steady hand etc. it is completely safe and there are companies out there permanently welding fine chain for bracelets and anklets. I’ve done a bracelet myself. The machines are not cheap, so not great economical for doing just an anklet or two for your friends. But if you’re going to use it in a salon, or you're make jewelry, it’s fantastic to have.

Thank you for your video. I keep trying to weld a very small chain, 1.5mm…. Very similar to your chain, actually . Would you be able to weld the chain if you would like? It’s just not working for me. I try with Silver and gold and it’s not working, if I use 3w doesn’t weld. 4w and 5w makes a gap. It’s so frustrating.
You don't need the argon gas. The gas actually just blows away the oxygen to reduce fire scaling. If it pops, likely you've got it on too high. Also, the two ends of the metal you're trying to weld together must be touching. Otherwise, it will simply melt the two ends back and separate them even further - which sounds like that's what happened with you.
You're welcome! No, you don't need argon. It just reduces fire scale (the light coating of ash that forms around the metal due to air burning). I found that even with argon, you cannot completely avoid fire scale. It can be removed with light brushing. I also bought a large tank of argon (the regulator was about $90 that you can get from the place that sold the machine), but it didn't last very long. The tank plus the gas was another $250 or so. I would not recommend it. However, if you really want it, one barely used set is for sale ;)

Are there jump rings that are too small of a diameter to weld successfully and consistently? I am repeatedly trying 2.5mm 24g and unable to successfully weld.
you should be able to weld 24g - I've done it even with 26ga. I think you need to go to lowest setting, if it still melts away the ring, then use an electrode that is a bit duller (not so pointy). It will give off less power.

hi again from here, this orion micro welder can be optionally retrofitted microscope with darkening function ?
Yes, absolutely. The screen can be upgraded to the microscope or an ADL screen - wider screen and 5x magnification (both are just connection plug-ins, like the original small screen that comes standard with the machine)

Is the Argon gas required to use the pulse arc machine? Or can it be used without it?
No, it’s not needed. It reduces, but does not completely avoid, fire scale.
Is there a welding machine that isn’t as pricey ?
