When Mike says “someone cared about me” that just hit like a ton of bricks. It’s such a true statement, we all seek that, the fulfillment of being a person and feeling worth from the person we respect and love. Mike you’re a wise man. Thanks Champ.
Being loved as a child makes a monster difference in life. Nothing to lose leads to the gangs and streets. Knowing someone loves you overcomes the sense of "nothing to lose"

"My disadvantage was my advantage”, I love this quote. Thank you Mike Tyson.
That quote only serves the uber talented and ruthless. Disadvantage very rarely benefits the disadvantaged.
@@dcee6670 Not true at all. I was severely disadvantaged and have a successful life. I'm not famous or "uber talented." But I am no longer disadvantaged because of those experiences. I know a lot of people like that. I'm not saying disadvantage people don't remain in those situations as the progress in life but to say it only serves the uber talented and ruthless is a lie.
@14720509 That's not a lie. When you think of the word ruthless you only associate it with callousness or lack of empathy. You have to be ruthless in work ethic and discipline. Make sacrifices and deny yourself of things that will not help you attain your goal. The person is right. Often times disadvantaged people feel they are too far down to ever get out of the situation they are in. You have to have a ruthless mindset that says, "I'm getting out of this situation no matter what, whatever I have to do(within the realm of legality) that's what I'm going to do." Sadly most people don't have that mindset or want to take the necessary, and hard steps to better themselves.

Mike Tyson has always been a champ to me. When I was just a little girl in Brooklyn, he came to visit a childhood friend of his who was friends with my mother. I was only 6 years old yet I remember clearly how big and strong but extremely gentle of a man he was. He picked me up and let me sit on his motorcycle and called me a princess. Every time I hear people say bad things about him, I realize how misunderstood he is/was. Children can sense “good” people from “bad” people, and I always felt he had a wonderful heart despite tough moments in his life. I’m proud to say he’s a hometown hero!

This just goes to show the importance of having a positive male role model in a young man's life. I'm glad Mike has grown so much throughout the years, he really is a humble guy.
His story fits like an ancient myth.
Lost in hell, found and guided by a wise sage, achieves greatness after the sage dies, falls into hell again, and in the end, redemption.
And he only knew Cus for 6 years before he passed away... That's how much of a difference it makes. Just six years of his life as a young man with a male role model in it and look how much it still affects him. He can hardly talk about it without choking up STILL
I wish my dad could've lived long enough to see Mike now. He always loved the guy and we NEVER missed one of his fights.

Hello
Nice comment, do you mind friendship
Mike Tyson is by far one of my favorite celebrities/athletes. He is such an inspiration to people of all ages. His messages and wisdom have made a positive impact on my own life and probably a million other peoples lives too. He is a perfect example of the fact that even if you are in a disadvantage growing up, you can still find success if you work hard and believe in yourself.
Mike has come full circle..losing Cus really hurt him..Cus was everything to Mike and inspite of losing his guidance Tyson became World Champion. I believe Mike wouldn't have had all the personal troubles if Cus didn't die.
Maybe if Cus didn't died Mike wouldn't have had all these troubles in his life but hey... best way to learn and get wisdom is sometimes by doing mistakes and learn from them. We must all come to a point where we recognize ourselves as sinners to believe in a Savior. His faith in God grew when he was in prison. When you feel empty and like a failure, nothing else can fill you like God himself and heal your wounds like He can.
Cus still lives on through Mike.
@daywalker8326 Nobody is saying that Mike didn't make some mistakes along the way, but he paid his debts to society, righted his wrongs, and grew into a better person.
@daywalker8326 Sure, it would be different, but it's not, so I guess I don't care. I like him now, and that is all there is to it. Like I said, he did his time. But you and I both know you would never have the balls to say it to him, lol.

Ever heard the story of the "Chained Elephant"? Adult Circus Elephants were once chained to the ground with a chain only big enough to retrain them at their youth size. When the elephants grow up, they are strong enough to easily break their own chain, but the creature does not know it. It is trained to believe their chain is too strong to break. I am starting to see that I am like a cichlid in a giant aquarium and that our reality is not at all what we think it is. Thank you Tyson for your lovely story.
I never thought I'd say this but Mike Tyson has become a national treasure through his experience of failures and successes in life. I also always felt bad for him when his daughter died, it took a lot out of him.
He grew up in the projects of NY and came out of that by pure will. My grandfather came here with nothing and I mean NOTHING. He did some awful things but he changed our entire family 's future. That's AMERICA 🇺🇲🇺🇲

Mike has had some dark periods. Without condoning his behaviour, everybody deserves a second chance. Given the options he had as a young man I'd say he has done the best with what he was given. I will always have respect for a man who admits his faults but strives to become greater than his demons.
And I'll try not to condon your behavior also

Tyson didn't whine about his life he made the choice to change it and become the champion of the world. What an amazing person
Cus was like Mickey. Just like him. Mike is truly blessed to have someone like Cus come into his life.
Mike as we get older we realize where we were as a young man and the mistakes we made and now we guide other young men. I'm retired from the military and I joined at 17 right out of high school not a clue what to do or where to go but I knew where I was and that was not a good place. My mom raised 4 alone and we all made an impact on our lives I'm not rich or famous I'm the man that was not in my life and that is better than him and of course that's all I wanted to be. I hope the very best for you and may god watch over you in your life. Young men today are losing their way and we need to guide them or we will all fail.

"Sometimes I get in my head and think I'm somebody, then I'm easily offended...but then I remind myself I'm nobody and I'm not." I know as well, my life wasn't easy growing up. I tell my story to all hoping they don't go through what I went through. Thank you Mike and Ali for keeping me strong. Stories like yours, Mike picks people up. My mom got me Muhammad Ali's autograph for me when I was very young. Most importantly my mom raised 9 kids as a poor mom. KUDOS to all the single moms who are as resilient as my mom. Go Ali, go Michael!
Your mother was a warrior! 9 kids.
My mother was a warrior too…Weren’t we lucky?
Mike is just raw as it gets.
We have lost the respect of our kids. Listen to him describe the healthy fear and obedience they showed to his first coach. He loved him because he cared and believed in him but they sought his approval and did not want to disappoint him. That’s what kids lack today. No respect for teachers, police officers, parents, grandparents, etc. I blame myself as well. I’m a parent. We are too soft on our kids. We are raising weak adults. We need to change 🙁
I agree 100%. My parents raised me like a "king kid", doing almost anything I wanted and having everything I needed. Oh dear oh dear let me tell you life slapped me in the face hard. I've suffered many depressions... but, everything was in God's plan. I found God in my distress and I hope that if I will ever be a parent one day, to raise my kids with love and teach them to have respect for others as themselves.
Every good parents want the best for their children. Sometimes it means to let them grow and let them walk their own path, but sometimes it can be to give them the best advices you can. That advice can be physical too. I've never been physically corrected by my parents and wish they would have done it at some point. Once my friend's father slapped me in the face. I was shook ! 😧 But it worked ! To this day I've never laughed about another person being obese. Most of the time kids are doing evil without being conscient about it. I think it's the role of the parents to teach them what is right and what is wrong.
I think there is great wisdom in what Mike said about not talking all the time. I am the best parent when I simply sit, listen, and don't judge immediately. I withhold my opinions unless it is something that I need to speak on. I think this gives off a sense of wisdom and stoicism to a child who is trying to figure you out.
I definitely don't do it all the time, but when it happens, I notice much more respect and even love from my children.
We don't respect our elders or superiors anymore cuz our generation is smart enough to see older people for what they really are: Old fogies with a deep seeded fear of growing old and forgotten who continue the cycle of abuse just to stroke their egos and to give themselves a sense of self worth their parents and superiors failed to give them in their youth. "Its just the way things are" is an excuse I've heard from almost everybody older then me when I ask why why anybody justifies their hateful behavior towards things that are different. The younger generations want things to change and listening to old farts like you people will only continue this godawful cycle.
