  • This video series is the companion to the BC Faller Training Standard, which was designed to teach new fallers safe work procedures for falling and bucking. The goal is to help workers with forestry experience develop the knowledge, attitude, skills, and abilities that will enable them to function as safe and productive fallers. Note: Some practices demonstrated were modified for filming and may not be consistent with the BC Faller Training Standard.

Also noted he's cutting from the falling side of the tree. Oops :)

VintageMotoSeattle where? On both trees shown, after the first notching cuts, he’s always beside or behind?

He’s cutting from the correct side. You don’t cut a tree falling uphill from the downslope side. If the butt slides downhill, you don’t want to be there.

No it’s not, they will buck out the busted piece, and buck the other pieces to different log lengths. Tree was bent anyways so was never going to be loaded onto a logging truck in one piece.

When we talk about slopes it's very confusing that you guys started calling it "falling" instead of the original "Felling".

They talk funny out there: falling, undercut, holding wood vice felling, face cut/notch, hinge, and more. Kind of a small linguistic ghetto, and proud of it? Is there a name for the PNW arborist/logger dialect.

    he broke the stem

At a minimum, did a lot of internal damage to the wood, dropping that stem onto those nearby stumps. Guess it's gonna be pulpwood.

      That's called power bucking.

Look at the shape of the tree, it has a big defect/bend in it, so that would have to be bucked out anyways, and that’s also where it broke. When your production falling you fall hundreds of trees depending on size a day or week. 150 plus days a year in steep ground you can barely walk on sometimes. If you think a lot of trees don’t get broken in this type of ground your mistaken. They are showing the reality of falling on a logging block.

When you see dust, instead of chips, you know that tree is in pretty bad shape.

Sounds to me like it's running way rich. And thick white fir bark makes for LOTS of dust; better to trim it with axe?
