Like the size and thickness, the breaker on the handle, the serrated part. Sometimes softer steel does require sharpening more often- but it sharpens easily and some will get really razor sharp! I would definitely love to have a Schf 40L! Thanks for all the great info!
Awesome,Looks like it did very well in doing what it was made for !Like the handle makes an awesome grip, and the overall size looks like it would cut through just about anything ! you guys did an AWESOME job on this one ! Liked aand will be sharing this one !Keep up the good Work !
Tac great video as always. Like how you do not baby the knives during testing. Just ordered the Schf 40LD. Live in Manitoba Canada so will put this knife through the Canuck torture test. Take care.
So friggin jealous of that fire though. I need to get somewhere where I can build one every now and then to keep warm. Wind chill of about -10 every other night. I also agree that they need to make a straight bladed version. Even though serrations are good for some things, they can't do the job by themselves. Great review Tac.
Btw, blade looks good aswell! When the video started I thought you'd left it near a fire, and it had melted slightly! Haha. Looks... Funky, like you said! 👌
Nice vid, I'd like to see some edge retention test too however. Maybe just cut some paper after all your tests to see if can still cut. I'm sure it can, but that would be nice to see, ya know.
Just pulled my SCHF40L out of storage and wanted to watch this again. Got mine a little over a year ago, but mine is SK5 steel, which is comparable to about a 1080 high carbon, which is awesome. Only a 7.5 huh? I'd go higher, maybe a 8.5. Only very slight con for me is I wish the grip was a little thicker and that the knife was USA made of course.
Hey Tac do you have an ear to the ground on the release date on the smaller schf40? I seen that Schrade has the 40L but dude the want way way to much for that blade. I'm hoping the 40 ends up in that 50$ to 60$ range, considering you can find the Gerber LMF For 66$ now and its sheath is really nice at that price. This new Schrade looks wicked and has me wanting:) I hope it hits the streets soon.
I really like the LMF II, so if they end up making one without the serrations, I will definitely buy one. I've been buying the hell out of schrade products since watching your channel and preparedmind101. I'll be honest though, my favorite knife to take in the woods right now is the Mora bushcraft orange. Keep up the great videos. I enjoy the lighthearted reviews.
hi dude...i really would appreaciate if you test the back of the knives with a firesteel in the future..seeing if its rounded or 90°.this could be important to know for some bushcrafters..for me it is^^......well, nice testing video.i´m thinking about ordering this beast....have a nice weekend
I agree that it looks like the Gerber Prodigy with the holes and pommel of the Gerber LMF2, except Schrade made it into a larger version to be more like a Ka-Bar or similar size knife. As usual, I enjoy your reviews.
***** How does this compare to the SOG Force? I have been thinking of buying one, but I thought the Schrade might be cheaper, and maybe a better purchase for me right now while I am trying to budget my money.
One more great vid as usual, but I would like to suggest something that u don't mention in your tests vids and that's how fast we can sharpen the knife u test in the field with modest field equipment, for example that Schrader came with a stone so how good and reliable is the stone as well, just a point of view cause u r simply my favourite channel. Cheers
Hey man...really good vids; your reviews & demos are some of the best on TH-cam--you should have 3 times the amount of subs than you have; what's up with that?
I love schrades, they are my favorite brand for larger knives. I just bought my schf26 for about 30 bucks. It's curently my favorite, but I want more. Any recomendations
What is the point of putting a fuller on a knife? Decrease weight? Or as I have heard some people say to make something bleed out faster which doesn't quite make sense to me. But either way great knife.
For the same reason that Iron beams used in building construction are "I" shaped beams. Fullers in knifes increase the surface area and help to distribute the localized impact or force along the a greater length of the blade instead of just leaving the force in one small area. The result is a blade that is tougher and can take more abuse before breaking. The fuller in swords and knifes never ever have anything to do with either wound suction or blood drainage. Hope this helps.
Dawson Schafer Yeah the fuller is for rigidity...adding extra tensile strength to the cross section of the blade. Blood grooves for suction theories are all a load of bollocks...chefs knives have no fullers!
Thanks for the review man! The SCHF40 is definitely a knock off of the Gerber LMF2, and this is like that on growth hormones. As such, I doubt there's a non-serrated version, because the LMF2 is serrated. That being said, I think the length on this makes it a better combat knife than the LMF2. And MAN it chops like a son of a gun!
Hefty strong blade, not fond of serrations on my blades but I could deal with it. I would hope as a survivalist knife it would be full tang. When the handle is wet does it retain it's grip or become slippery...All in all a nice lookin' blade!
Hey brother since you have a pretty good collection and variety of blade steels I would love to see some of these "so-called" cheap steels given a test next to other "so-called" better steels. I honestly am getting really irritated with people who trash talk knives that have 420j2, 440,420hc exc exc yadda yadda. You gave that 40L a good workout and Fire and Steel beat the crap out of the 40, both your vids were evidence to me that it's pretty dang good. From what I can gather it seems like its all about the heat treatment that makes or breaks a knife, yes the 420 might need sharpened sooner but overall strength compares the same. It would be a cool video and something different that many people seem to be divided about, oh man the comments would light up.
What an awesome blade. Schrade knives are some of the best blades I have owned. I appreciate your review of this incredible blade. The Schf 40L is amazing and I will add or win one for my tool bag. I have more schrade blades than any other. This blade reminds me of the LMFll another blade I own. I think this one wins between the two!
The funny thing is, that carbon-steel is almost always cheaper than stainless-steel, and is easier to work with. Regardless of that the cheap and budget stuff still most of the time is made out of bad stainless:D
these are so cool I bought 4 of them, 2 coyote brown and 2 black. A user and a collector of each.
Did u buy them more recently? I havnt been able to find them for years now. It was my favorite knife and I got rid of it thinking I could replace it.
@@davidlagno7717 yeah on ebay, theres a few on there now
Like the size and thickness, the breaker on the handle, the serrated part. Sometimes softer steel does require sharpening more often- but it sharpens easily and some will get really razor sharp! I would definitely love to have a Schf 40L! Thanks for all the great info!
anytime Susan!

thanks Michael!
Great review ! Thank you ! First time seeing a knife with this type of steel.

Tac great video as always. Like how you do not baby the knives during testing. Just ordered the Schf 40LD. Live in Manitoba Canada so will put this knife through the Canuck torture test. Take care.
That thing is a beast!!
Looks good but is the pomel part of the full tang or an add on. Still a nice blade regardless of the steel used. Nice sheath too

I liked the part where he cut down the tree with it, now THAT'S a sharp, durable blade!!!
So friggin jealous of that fire though. I need to get somewhere where I can build one every now and then to keep warm. Wind chill of about -10 every other night.
I also agree that they need to make a straight bladed version. Even though serrations are good for some things, they can't do the job by themselves.

I agree that it looks like the Gerber Prodigy with the holes and pommel of the Gerber LMF2, except Schrade made it into a larger version to be more like a Ka-Bar or similar size knife. As usual, I enjoy your reviews.
thanks

One more great vid as usual, but I would like to suggest something that u don't mention in your tests vids and that's how fast we can sharpen the knife u test in the field with modest field equipment, for example that Schrader came with a stone so how good and reliable is the stone as well, just a point of view cause u r simply my favourite channel. Nice review brother! I hope I can win one of these! =)
good luck bro!
What's the dip that runs down the knife for?
less mass so less weight
that's a blood groove
Catching your adversaries blood
I'm looking for a large military style knife, this looks like the one. should I get it?
I love schrades, they are my favorite brand for larger knives. I just bought my schf26 for about 30 bucks. It's curently my favorite, but I want more. Any recomendations

***** I would, but I can't seem to find it, which sucks case it looks awesome
Very cool review. Great knife.
thanks Jason!

Thanks for the helpful response I never did understand quite what they were added for. But I know now, thanks for not being a dick about it.
You are very welcome. 8-)
Dawson Schafer Yeah the fuller is for rigidity...adding extra tensile strength to the cross section of the blade. Blood grooves for suction theories are all a load of bollocks...chefs knives have no fullers!

it does chop like a mofo!
Value for money.
I will get a few and test them in Africa at more comfortable temperatures. :-)
Thanks Tac for the good review.

Hefty strong blade, not fond of serrations on my blades but I could deal with it. I would hope as a survivalist knife it would be full tang. When the handle is wet does it retain it's grip or become slippery...All in all a nice lookin' blade!
TPE is grippy stuff
Do you like it better then the Ka Bar BK2? Just got the BK2 and it's a beast.

This really seems like an improved KA-BAR, atleast in the utility use.

How well does it hold an edge? I heard that 420 j2 is a crappy steel
Where did you find this? I can't find it anywhere online.
FlameNinja 64 its not for sale yet
Oh ok. When do you think it will be?
in Feb
Excellent review! I want one.
