Sampling and Looping with the Korg Microsampler

  • I have a ton of sampling and looping gadgets, in all shapes and sizes. One of my oldest samplers is this Korg Microsampler. So I thought I would break it out and see what I could do with it.
    The Korg Microsampler has a variety of ways of dealing with sampled sound. Sounds can be mapped across the whole keyboard, essentially turning your voice into a playable keyboard instrument. Or you can sample separate sounds to each key, giving you the ability to play sounds like a drum kit. The possibilities are truly endless.

      I love that little keyboard. It’s weird I had it for years but never really took the time to figure it out. So I’m just starting to get re-aquatinted with it.

    Cryptic yet highly fascinating. You’ve shown that sampling with just the microphone is extremely capable. It’s almost a forgotten art with so many people sampling audio, which is fine too. The first of your videos I have seen and now I am interested in your music. Thanks for showing the Microsampler is not a toy.

      @@daspetey I just found mine at a music shop in excellent condition. I’m by no means new to Korg. I’ve had a couple MicroKorgs, XL MicroKorg, Electribe Sampler, Kaossilator, and other synths. But I did not even know this existed. Your video has inspired me and it reminds of a film here on TH-cam from the early 80s, or maybe late 70s, where Peter Gabriel is out in the world with a microphone and a tape recorder. He brings those sounds back to his CMI Fairlight. You’re basically doing the same thing. Very cool.

    I hope you give your korg microsampler a good dusting as it will eventually kill the keybed & potentially other components. Rant aside, excellent creativity & keep up the good work! That first bit outside reminded me of BOC style warbly synths! Peace.

    Yes very BOC & lovely vocalising ❤ So nice to hear. Hope you don’t mind but I’m circulating this tip on a few key MS videos …Removing the dial knobs & dropping (garden hose or similar ) black silicon washers over the pot shafts - then replacing the knobs again really firms them up and makes parameter adjustments a lot easier. It also reduces the flimsy toy feel as a bonus! Dials hardly notice visually sitting a little higher btw. Only just worked this out after 14 yrs of owning this little beast!

    Hi Pete! Very interesting! I wish the camera was angled so I could see more what you were doing. So you were in pattern mode at one point and were you able to record live vocals while in keyboard mode? Were you using the loop effect at some point? I'm hoping to learn how to use my MS better, some have mentionned an auto loop workaround for layering...

    • @daspetey
      @daspetey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks for watching! yes, I was in pattern mode, and also using the keyboard mode to play on that. the vocals that I sang over it weren't recorded into the microsampler. I don't think I used the loop function on this video, but I do like using that to start songs.

    I really like the atmospheric stuff you do! That's definitely similar to what I want to make. From what I've researched most used microsamplers go for around 400 these days. That's not too bad a price for me, but I guess I'm just wondering...do you think its a worthwhile purchase these days with all the new samplers and daws? Mainly I'm attracted to the hands on nature of it.

    • @daspetey
      @daspetey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm.. that's a tough one. i bought mine years ago, before all these new ones came out. i would say it's really up to how you approach music making. if you're willing to use a computer/DAW, then there are so many choices for sample manipulation and playback. and midi controllers are so cheap now.
      and even if you want to stay DAW-less, there are a ton of new options that do what the microsampler does. but each have their limitations too.
      for example, i love the Pocket Operator PO-33 for it's quick ability to chop up and resequence samples. but it doesn't have a proper keyboard. and playing the little calculator buttons can be tricky. the Volca sample is nice too, but doesn't have an onboard mic. so you have to load samples in externally somehow.
      so for me, the immediateness of the microsampler is pretty cool. record something with the built-in mic, and either make a sequence from it, or play it as a keyboard. for me, that's worth it.

    hi pete, really nice video!
    is it possible to plug any synth in , record a note, spread it to the full keyboard and then record it as a preset in order to play the sound with the micro sampler, avoiding by this way to carry around tons of synths?

    • @daspetey
      @daspetey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      absolutely! that's the beauty of this little thing. you can sample anything/line in, and spread it across the keyboard, or you can sample things one note at a time (works best for drum kits and percussion), so each key plays a different sample.
      it's really fun to play with.

    • @sebastienbui9600

    I missed out buying one of these locally for $500cad. Are there are other sampling keyboards you can recommend around the same price?

    • @daspetey
      @daspetey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm.. good question. i don't know about sampling keyboards, but there are a lot of great affordable samplers out there. i use the teenage engineering pocket operator po-33. it's a tiny little beast of a sampler. also the volca sample from korg is pretty good. but i don't think it has a mic for sampling, i think you need to import them.
      i'll keep looking around, i think casio had a shitty sampling keyboard back in the day.

    • @burntumber
      @burntumber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daspetey I was looking at the Volca sample, using a midi keyboard with it. There's not so much memory though. I have a Boss SP505, but I'm hoping for a keyboard, maybe rack unit I can control via midi.

    • @daspetey
      @daspetey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@burntumber i know what you mean, about these little guys not having much sample storage. at some point it probably makes sense to just run a laptop with a usb midi keyboard. or maybe even an ipad with a little midi keyboard. i know it's not quite as sexy as keeping things outboard.
