    In my 62 years, I've seen our society go from ' most people smoke ' to ' most people don't smoke ', so from the point of view of every non - smoker or every smoker who has ever died a tragic and pathetically sad death from cigarette induced cancer, that is a tremendous amount of progress. I would never presume to tell anyone what they can and cannot do with their lives, but knowing what we know about cigarettes now, I wouldn't endorse the habit either. It's quite logical that we've relocated the problem to the third world, where poor regulation and education still exist in great quantity, along with a great quantity of human population, whose lives are no more significant to the tobacco companies than our lives were here in North America. The profits are still rolling in, only it's their people who are dying rather than ours.

    I'd love to ask Mr. Raymond Sasso - shown early on, in the San Francisco bar, illegally smoking (who says 'we're losing the battle, but, not the war') now - almost 30 years, after this series was made - and IF he's still alive, if his position' changed.
    If he is alive, I'd like to hear about his current health, so - Mr. Sasso - if you are out there, somewhere, and can see this (or, if a living friend, or relative of his does), kindly drop a line, here, and tell us; what happened in the time since this aired to Mr. Sasso, and his health.

    Vaping is the future. Within 10-20 years more people will vape then will smoke cigarettes. I challenge all the smokers out there (who want to quit) to go out and get a good quality vaporizer and see how easy it is to switch over. Vaping is a damn miracle and it will save lives.

    • @HomelightRealtyAZ
      @HomelightRealtyAZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      vaping is smoking and is just as dangerous as tobacco... look up popcorn lung.. unfortunately ALL the data and research isn't in yet but already it is showing signs of being just as dangerous.. DON"T put shit in your Lungs.. period. By the way, I quit smoking after almost 50 years and i wouldn't touch vaping with a 10 foot poll.

    • @HomelightRealtyAZ
      @HomelightRealtyAZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +harm meijer I understand, I just wouldn't substitute vaping for smoking. quitting smoking is an adult sport, meaning its not for people who only kinda want to quit. you either do or you dont, you either succeed or you fail and each time you try to quit gets harder and harder. notice that vaping isn't any more legal in public places as cigarettes are. why?

    • @surbon514
      @surbon514 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matt Graham It certainly isn't as bad for you as smoking, but who is to say 10 years down the line that people won't be dropping dead off some new mysterious illness?! Nicotine is a deadly poison. I feel like, if you want to quit then quit but vaping is just trading one devil for another. Not to mention, the big tobacco companies are all into the vaping biz now

    • @genebigs1749
      @genebigs1749 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there is more diacetyl in cigarettes than in vapor.....there has never been a case of "popcorn lung" in cigarette smokers. Vaping is as close to harmless as you can get. It is a miracle, and should be embraced by health officials. It is truly the ONLY way to quit smoking successfully for most people. By the way, I agree. Nicotine is NOT especially addictive. Smoking is.

    I smoke myself and have since I was eleven I cant stop because I am addicted to it but it would be a lot easier to quit if I didn't enjoy it People say you only think you enjoy it because your addicted to it and yet I know people who very rarely smoke but when they do they do so because of the simple fact that they enjoy it the reason for this enjoyment is because cigarettes release dopamine into the brain, the pleasure chemical. not illegal why? cos in 2011 the British gov made £ billion tax.

    Great documentary! I've been a smoker for about a year and a half, smoking about three cigarettes a week with additive free rolling tobacco and its probably one of the most enjoyable habits I've ever taken up in my life.
    Here are 5 Thoughts on Why I Smoke Cigarettes:
    1. If you are not willing to even give me the time of day because I have a pinch of dried leaves rolled into a tiny cylinder of paper and lit on fire between my fingers, and that's your only reason to not talk to me, then thank you for removing yourself from the equation and not wasting my time.
    2. There is something zen and meditative about sitting down with a bag of tobacco and rolling your own cigarettes. The mechanical muscle memory of making something relieves you of having to focus on other things.
    3. Almost everything seems better with a cigarette. Long drives in the car. Pulling an all-nighter. Coffee. Sex. Taking a poop. The only thing I can think of that it makes worse is a stuffy nose and a sore throat from a cold, and god dammit if I just don't soldier through that.
    4. There's something beautiful about the way that smoke curls through the air, interacts with sunlight, and vanishes like it never existed. It really makes me want to capture it in a photograph or draw it on a pad of paper.
    5. As far as addictions go, smoking cigarettes is probably the least harmful one that I have. Friendships will come and go. Relationships will start and end. People are born and then we die. But I can always go to a gas station and buy a new pack of cigarettes.

    The flight attendant (around 26:30) says the tobacco companies are evil & to blame for her disease. But isn't the other real culprit here the airline she worked for??? After all, given the info available at the time it would have been clear to the airline that the _concentrated_ smoke in a plane cabin couldn't be good.
    As a boy, 30yrs ago, I used to ride some trains in the Smoking Cars because they had free seats. Even I knew that the concentrated smoke couldn't be good but I figured it was only a short time. If a 15yo schoolboy could work that out I reckon an airline could too.

    • @UNOwen1
      @UNOwen1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +thePrinceBuster5 it's both ways, because up until relatively recently, it was next-to-impossible to even SUE the tobacco companies for your health problems, as part of the argument was 'nobody forced you to.' Which also covers the airlines in away because, they could say there was no concrete information one-way-or-another about the effects of secondhand smoke.

Oh and when u think about it, it won't be cigarettes that kill them, but the medical care that discriminates against them that lead to their death. Don't be a do good-er who does harm.

Forget about the botched (and pointless) war on drugs. Forget about inequality. Forget about crooked politicians. I dunno. Ok to everyone who smokes and say they like it.... its ok to like it its normal to like something and yes u get addicted to it...but if u say u dont care about the dangers of smoking then ur screwed ... i mean come on use your brain. we can only live once its not worth it to risk our lives with smoking and if u do dont die..its still painful. so just think about that

    Actually your likelihood of development, type, and severity of cancer is primarily determined by your genetics. Recently they've discovered a gene that is very involved with the development of lung cancer. No copies means you're highly unlikely to develop lung cancer, and probably account for the people who smoke several packs a day for decades without getting sick. One copy gives you a moderate chance of developing it, and exposure to carcinogens from smoking could very well be what tips

      lol...Ayn Rand was a fuckstick for the second half of her life that absolutely refused to accept the fact that smoking cigarettes caused her lung cancer that then of course took her ass out. This "data" of yours sounds of something she'd accept as fucking gospel to help support her latent fuckheadedness, the huge disappointment that girl became to her fans, like myself at one time. Please don't take offense to my words here, Sir. Cheers!

    These people always discuss smoking as a death sentence.. that is just untrue.

      pls don't feel sorry for someone who enjoy's what he does, we live only once and i would love to live that life how i want. Smoking is a free choice u should not judge people because they want's to smoke. If u do u should go judge people who eats in Mc donalds or "kinda" places. Smoking gives me more good than bad at the moment, it might turn upside down, but at least i enjoyed it now! "I Feel sorry for you" cos u don't know what your missing while u don't smoke

      I smoked many years.. Until I watched my best friend die of smoking.. a horrible death at 60. Smoking is an addiction.. And not as much of a choice as you think. It takes balls to quit even if you hate it. But go right ahead and puff away. Your life.. Your lungs..

    • @HomelightRealtyAZ
      @HomelightRealtyAZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, I will never be a slave to tobacco again.. my life is much less complicated now that I don't smoke and far more enjoyable to me. Guess I would have to ask your grandfather personally if he thinks dying is worth smoking... Now that I have been on both sides of this I'll chose to be free of the addiction and continue to hope others will find that peace of mind and body. You don't need to respond more, I can see you are a strong person, most smokers are or they wouldn't have been able to force the smoke down in to lungs that weren't meant to have smoke in them. We weren't born with chimney's.

    I half the population wants to smoke let them. Every bar and restaurant can have a smokers area, and make sure there are laws regarding child protection etc for passive smoke. Tax sh*t of them and use this to pay for smoking related disease. In the end its freedom of choice.
