    I gotta say I *LIKE* your choice of solder. _”I love the small of rosin in the morning, it smells like … a pine forest”._ It would be horrible if I didn’t like the smell, because … when I solder without a fume hood, the rosin fumes get into my nose, stick to my nose hairs, and I can smell it for *DAYS!*😀

    Your name reminds me of a story my dad told me from his time in the Navy in WWII in the South Pacific. Someone on his ship bought a monkey (I know a monkey is not an ape, but bear with me) and brought it onboard. The men taught the critter to smoke cigars and he loved them. However, the money also got seasick. As soon as they got near another island, the monkey jumped ship and swam to shore. The men thought the monkey was smarter than them for doing so.

    You need to show how you calibrated the nanovna with those alligator clips. The alligator clips should be the reference plane for these measurements.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Heath. I didn't calibrate with the clips, and don't disagree that it could have made a difference. I look at it like this; I'm not running a NIST Calibrated lab by any stretch of the imagination. Also, if I have the antenna complete I can't test it connected directly to the VNA, it would have to be mounted and connected via some form of feed line. When I test it for real, with the antenna I'm not going to climb the mast to calibrate the VNA; I'm going to calibrate it at the desk / bench.

    An old rule of thumb, if the lengths are less 1/10 of a wavelength you can safely ignore them for a rough estimation. Your leads are much shorter than that. I can't tell if your bench is metal or not. If it is, then that might be the problem. The fact that the error goes up with frequency in a linear fashion is a clue. Not sure what it means though.
    Nice video, thanks!

    Totally new to baluns. Seems I have seen balun wraps that use both conductors and some that allowed bypass of the ground sheath wire and only wrap the center conductor. Am I wrong in this? Why both wires, why not? I'm trying to make one just for 11 meters but can't find specifics about how many turns etc....Thanks.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey HP1. They do come in a variety of configurations and yes, some will short to the shield. For 11m it would depend on the antenna and what you want the balun to do; for example suppress CMC or impedance match? If you use a tuner, why do you need a balun?

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      The tuners tunes the antenna system, which includes the coax. It does nothing for the mismatch between the coax and the antenna, the balun / unun helped with this problem.

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not, but it's still on the list. In an nutshell the 4:1 is for matching 200 ohm antennas while the 9:1 is for 450 ohm antennas. Thanks for watching David

  • @williambickham2042
    @williambickham2042 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as swr, wouldn't things be quite different with actual element radiators rather than resistors? For instance, my antenna, an inverted vee up 35ft with a pair of 43 ft legs and 450 ohm antenna from top to shack did not tune well on 20 meters when the legs were only 33ft each. 33ft legs were good for 40 meters since each leg was 1/4 wave and thus signal are on peaks but was 1/2 waves for 20 meters which put signals on nulls. The extra 10 ft on each leg made them 5/8 on 20 meters which got the signals to a non null area. Doesn't using resistors eliminate an important part of the equation? KC6IJH Bill

    • @TheSmokinApe
      @TheSmokinApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey William. Yes it would be because the impedance of the actually antenna would vary greatly with frequency, I have a video on impedance if you are interested. I used the resistor to mimic a load with minimal variance across frequency to test the unun’s transformation ability 👍

    That is not an "UNUN" ! That is a 4:1 current balun! But it would be much better wound on mix 61 ferrite cores which will give it a much flatter SWR curve. Also, it should be wound with Teflon insulated wire, plastic insulated wire can melt and cause arching at fairly low power which will ruin the balun. Also, you leads are much too long, especially at the top where to connect the red and yellow wire in the center, they should be no longer than need to just reach each other and nothing more. With the plastic insulated wire, I would not recommend running more than 100 watts SSB and even much less for digital modes and CW. By using Teflon insulated wire and mix 61 cores, you could expect to run 500 watts SSB, and around 200 watts CW and digital. These ratings are based on use only in a matched condition! In other words, use with antennas that provide a near 200 ohm load, not for a highly reactive load lake a ladder line fed doublet.
