- A navy suit is, without a doubt, one of the most versatile suits that you can own. You can dress it up. You can dress it down. And because a navy suit is more or less the menswear equivalent of a blank slate, there are literally limitless shirt and tie combinations that work with it. In this video, I'm showing you just five of the many ways it's possible to style a navy suit.

One thing that you should understand is that there are many, many different kinds of navy suits, both in terms of color and fabric. A navy suit can be very dark or on the lighter side of navy, like the Michael Andrews Bespoke suit featured in this video. In terms of fabric, the shiner or more sheen the fabric has, the more formal (and less versatile) it will be. If you want something with maximum versatility, the fabric you want is a hopsack fabric. It has a nice texture and will allow you to break the suit up into separates.

He Spoke Style all! Definitely no doubt. I always loved the idea of picking a favorite from mulitple choices but you Brian is ultimately different. I might be praising too much but it's because you deserve much more. High Quality content, Effortlesslyt stylish and a meticulous gentleman. You only post content based on your own experiences and that is very good. Do what you love and your fans such as myself would follow.

I always enjoy seeing the array of versatility style option with a certain centerpiece of clothing and the looks that can be had. A month ago I didn’t have any Navy Jacket in my evolving wardrobe or any Blue Suit as well. As of right now I have a Navy Suit, A Sky Blue Suit, A real Navy Blazer Jacket, a Linen Navy Jacket. Got to get that Linen one tailored slightly but ok. But Yeah, things are evolving and it will help for versatility going into fall season with the Navy Jackets. You’ve been a great help!

Great video! I have a question for you - I have a very nice made to measure charcoal suit from brooks brothers. Took 5 or 6+ fittings before a final product. I don't necessarily have the funds to go that route again, however, I am looking to get a navy suit. Thoughts on options, sellers, or particular brands to try out? I've tried off the rack in the past (Bar III), but have a build similar to that of yours and find that they aren't quite tapered or fitted adequately. However, I could always get one, then tailor.
Wow, five to six fittings seems pretty extreme. I have nothing but respect for Brooks Brothers, but it sounds like they maybe didn't do the best job for you. A good MTM experience you should have two *maybe* three fittings. Curious whether you did full MTM or the program they have where it's *kind of* MTM but it's mostly you are just picking details of your suit, like buttons, pockets, lapels, etc. If it was that, it would make more sense to me because they didn't actually make a pattern for you, but are trying to sandwich you into one of their existing fits that was closest to your body measurements.
As far as recommendations, you're going to have to give me a price range so I can make the best suggestions for you. Michael Andrews Bespoke is the best in the game, in my opinion, and I have tried lots of different options over the years. MAB currently doesn't offer MTM, BUT I can tell you that they will in the very near future--like this spring. But let me know your price point in the meantime and I can do my best to help.
More than anything, it seems to me like you need to get hooked up with a quality tailor.

If you ask me, a great look for a navy suit - outside of crisp white shirt, grenadine tie and cap-toe oxford (Consul by Church’s) - is an open collar crisp white shirt and black or dark brown derby (Shannon by Church’s).

That would be a bit NAY from me. For me, that's just too much blue. I'm not big on colored shoes, but if you had a pair of dark navy suede double monks, those would look killer with a charcoal or mid-grey suit.
Hi Brian, a few questions...
Your videos (this and the "first suit" video) have got me thinking about getting one more navy suit...but last time my tailor said that hopsack is not ideal for suits, mainly because it's not great for trousers (scratchy or easily damaged, forgot which), so I ended up with just a blazer. Any thoughts? I got holland and sherry crystal springs.
I mean, obviously I like it for a suit. I have not had the issue your tailor is afraid of. Cloth is VBC and I wear it all the time.

Thanks, Keith! And that's very exciting. I would go for a cap toe. Wholecuts are nice, but they're really sort of specific in terms of look. To me they're much more formal. You'll get a lot more wear out of a pair of cap toes.

I believe that a dark pair of quality jeans ( no rips or to much fading) is needed in your pairing with almost any of your shoes to complete the suit wardrobe.
So it's well acceptable to wear a navy suit jacket with other/non same-suit trousers, such ad gray, as opposed to a separate sport coat or blazer?

Tell him/her that you just want the front to kiss the top of your shoe. Also, be mindful that as you sit, certain fabrics are going to crease, which will naturally "shorten" your pants if you've been sitting for a while. For my linen and cotton pants, I always have them tailored just a little longer than a I would a nice wool.

That particular tie is from Drake's. Would recommend looking there.
Maybe its just me, but I'd much rather prefer a roped shoulder, high waist, either DB or a 2 piece with about 4.5inches peak lapels, although I'm 6'2 and got broad shoulders... But i feel like the small notch lapels make you feel like you have got a suit that hasnt got enough fabric, now this is a matter of preference... but a sharp DB or a 2 piece peak lapel with a nipped in waist and high armhole... is statement pieces nonetheless.

While I like your styling ideas, I think you'll agree that they're not the most versatile--certainly the roped shoulder in terms of wearing the jacket as a separate.

An old polish shoemaker Jan Kielman is a great bang for your buck in my opinion its a MTM process, and they do most of the work by hand which is showcased in this video! True craftmanship! Absolutely incredible video. I don't think most people--especially the younger generation of menswear "influencers"--have any idea about the craft and passion that goes into making a pair of shoes like that. I personally have not waded into the bespoke shoe world, though I would love to experience it one day. I have a pair of Enzo Bonafes that feel incredible, but I'm sure bespoke would be next level. 8-8.5cm is pretty darn classic and standard.

The label width is 3.5", which is proportionate to my body. That tie size works very well with that lapel width.
