I'm a boring guy in my early 20s, I've never smoked or vaped. but as an engineering student, the use of lithium and plastic used for disposable vapes pisses me off, my university says it greens but sells the fucking things in the SU shop. disposable vapes should be banned as they are just waste, we need to get rid off all single use item that has a high energy recycle process.

Yeah, it's so needlessly wasteful. If you want to vape rather than smoke, buy a refillable, rechargeable device. Immediate financial barrier to adolescents and a massive reduction in e-waste.
I use them and I want them banned as I can't stop and it kills me how much stuff is wasted in these. In a few years former landfill sites will be being dug up for these things.

@@seamushogan849honestly a lot of the vapes I see kids using are the big ones that cost £10-15. A cheap pod mod is like £20 and a bottle of e liquid is £4 tops. So I’d argue refillable vapes aren’t significantly more expensive to start with, and are definitely cheaper in ongoing cost.
There goes my 'recycle' argument 😅. I didn't realise it was that serious, I actually thought they had a plan like with batteries. I'm switching to reusable, hopefully they figure something out😮💨

What on earth are you on about. Millions of people can't afford to buy there own home, and there at the mercy of the private rental market. Where people are having to pay extortionate rent. Social housing provides millions of people good quality homes at affordable rent.
Also because they pay much lower rent. It gives people the opportunity to save more money for a bigger deposit if they are saving up for a house.

@mrow278 you don't have to aim so low. You could push for policy that would allow people to own a house and increase stock (eg no 2nd home tax in Scotland on any newly built house + pushing for jobs in regional areas + a wealth tax on any land ownership via companies)

I have known quite a few people who started smoking as a child. Some of them would go round picking up ends to use to roll their own second-hand smokes. I'm in favour of banning disposables from an environmental perspective since they're so wasteful. A pod system is just cheaper and better for the planet, but the liquids and coils for them aren't as readily available because they aren't as much of a moneyspinner as disposable vapes.
I think the cigarette ban idea is amazing. My Dads dying of emphysema and can barely walk to the bathroom. People who see this stuff realise the importance of protecting people from a huge and powerful lobby. There is no merit to cigarettes, unlike so many illegal drugs…

I bought my first vape in 2011, it looks like a cigerette but had a blue light on the end. I would vape in clubs to purposely confuse the bouncers.

I’ve vaped for as long as the Duggfather, and nice flavours helped me get off rollies, when vapes were arguably quite shit. Disposables, however, are wasteful and awful for the environment and we should ban them. Flavours are universally enjoyed by humans, we shouldn’t ban those.

Lithium isn't a rare earth metal. It's one of the most common metals in the earth's crust.

My problem with vapes has always been the fruity flavors. I don't want my vices to taste of healthy fruit. I'd like to bring out a range of filthy, desperate vapes. Flavours like Unwashed Coffee Cup, Outpatient Clinic, Cocained Money and 3am Kebab.

Good pod, Oli's take on vaping is whack. Vapes were explicitly pivoted to by the big tobacco firms as a way to replace the youth market approach that got them into trouble with Joe Camel's mascot, for example. Tobacco companies have always wanted to discreetly win over a youth market, and playing into that because "prohibition doesn't work" is childish. Listen, Oli can do what he likes, but banning disposable vapes from being sold is environmentally sound, and *does* provide a boon to public health.
I used one of the crappy cig shaped with a light on the end, never used flavours, just nicotine. Gave up smoking in 2017, stopped vaping in 2020, it worked for me, you have to want to stop, not get nagged or harassed into it.
Yes, it should be legalised. It would solve myriad issues.
It's funny that Oli was that upset about the progressive increase in smoking age, considering he is legally allowed to buy cigarettes and therefore will never be impacted by the law. No one buying their cigarettes legally is impacted by the law.

Ban flavours, just make them reusable and cheaper, scalable in price to the amount of nicotine in it, so that instead of spending 20 quid on a pack of 20 you can buy a vape for a tenner that lasts the same amount of time, or a fiver for a low nicotine alternative.
If science could deliver a solution that also TASTED of something whilst critically not subjecting the rest of the place to smelling like a Pick ‘n’ Mix counter on a hot day, that too would be amazing.
My friend's foster kid is in hospital right now, coughing blood because he's 17 and been vaping since he was 14, his lungs are infected and if he gets covid, game effing over. No vapes.

The 'no buyers born after X date' is the cowards way to cut the harm of smoking. It gives the tobacco companies loads of time to pivot to vapes or whatever nicotine addiction delivery method comes next, and it avoids upsetting all the currently addicted. Its not wrong, but its fucking weak.

Was Ed raised in the same scotland as me? People were drinking and smoking in primary 7 and there were primary age kids dieing in glasgow from drug overdoses.
By S1 there were people overdosing and getting ambulanced away at lunchtime (ok that only happened once at my school).

The overconsumption of food and the resulting waste, is one of the major issues, environmentally speaking.
Perhaps we ought to ban anyone above 30 BMI from buying more than they need? Easy fix, and can be legislated for overnight.
After all, their "poor" life choices are impacting us all, right?
I often find people whose only response is to ban anything they do not agree with, suddenly change their tune when the ban affects them. And if your solution is to simply ban your way to a better environment, best of luck to you.
