Vitamin D for Weight Loss???

  • Vitamin D is one of the most important supplements you can take. Without it you will never achieve the weight loss, health and longevity you want.
Many doctors don't know much about Vitamin D. Some doctors think it is silly, some think it is dangerous. It is neither, it is vital in helping reduce your chances of cancer, viral infections and brittle bones.
It is one of the few supplements I recommend because there is just no good food/drink source in the western diet.

Dr. Berry, do you recommend a multivitamin for daily use or a mixture of several different vitamins and minerals on their own and is there a specific brand I should be looking for? I need more vitamins and minerals but I'm overwhelmed by all the choices.

    • @KenDBerryMD

Great question. Sooo many multivitamin pills either have synthetic vitamins or vitamin formulations that aren't absorbed that you have to be very careful just taking one off the shelf. You can either end up taking something that isn't great for you, or that is a complete waste of money. I'll be addressing this in future videos...

I’ve been taking 10,000 IU D3 for 10 years. My initial 25(OH) was 14 ng/mL 😳 Right away, I lost a few pounds without trying and over the next few months, my (self-diagnosed) IBS healed completely. It’s life changing. Now my level is checked annually and hovers right around 90 ng/mL so I’m good to go. Your videos are fantastic and I appreciate them.

I was deficient last year, and even went on the 50,000 IU per week for a time to get it up above 30. It was 30 in November 2022. At that point, I started taking 8,000 IU per day at least 5 days per week. I had it tested again last month and it was 64. Hallelujah!!! My doctor actually took the time to send me a letter with the results and told me to keep doing what I was doing. At this point, I'm taking 6,000 to 8,000 IU per day probably 5-6 days per week...some days I get into a rush or run out and have to purchase more, but it's not so frenetic now that I'm at a good place and out of deficiency!!!
I started keto/carnivore about 3 weeks ago, and have lost about 7 pounds of the 20 pounds I gained the year before (pounds that came on taking beta-blockers for about 5 months...long story) but I truly believe that having my Vitamin D level in a good level has helped!!!

I've been taking Vitamin D for over a year now, and (knock on wood) haven't been sick enough to be "out of commission". My level is pretty optimal currently, and I take 5000 iu per day now. I have a 26 year old severely disabled daughter, whom I am a caregiver. I started her on 5000 iu per day a few months ago and it seems her immunity is improving. Thanks so much for this information! She also has seizure disorder, since birth, and I had never heard of Ketogenic eating as a help to her brain ( and I'm a LONG time labor and delivery nurse), but have started feeding her keto based macros and I swear she is happier and more verbal!

I wish I knew this years ago...before I was put on 450 mgs. daily of anti depressants. I was told that my hair loss was from stress/anxiety, weight gain from depression, lack of energy, etc. was depression. I was told that I have a chemical imbalance and that is why I am depressed, on and on....Well, I will No Longer be "Patient" while I "Wait" on my Dr. to "Practice Medicine" on me. I have been on Keto for 2 wks, had the keto flu, then a cold with a fever, whatever that is called, lost 4" over all and bounced around the same 4 lbs. Maybe this is exactly what I need to get this fat off of me, get my hair back, and start getting my self-esteem back. I have thought for years that I had a "Mental Illness" called Clinical Depression/Severe Anxiety/PTSD. Thank you Dr. Berry. :)

Back in 2010 I found myself overweight, stressed, and unable to really think properly. I saw a book about vitamin D deficiency and knew it was me. I also kept getting shingles even though I stayed out of the sun. My doctor tested me at my request and I came in as being very insufficient..at 6 instead of 40 or above. My thyroid and blood pressure were off also and I was given prescriptions for both. I decided to start with my diet and elevating my D levels first. I ate organic and non processed foods only along with some supplements. I returned 6 months later never having taken any medications and everything was normal. Nutrition and lifestyle is the key to health. Now I am 66 and feel great.

I am so excited that I found your videos! I am 50 years old and I have been dealing with almost every symptom of vitamin d deficiency for years and because most doctor's I've seen are very dismissive and refuse to listen when I would tell them that something is off in my body because I am pretty in tune with my body they get defensive and dismiss my concerns, I now wait until I am so ill that I don't have a choice but to go. Most of my symptoms weren't to extreme until now, my energy levels are so low it's hard to get off my couch, I gained almost 50 lbs after I went into recovery from my addiction to pain medications and I cannot lose any of it no matter how hard I try, I have developed a severe skin condition which causes the most extreme painful itching over my entire body, I have bad intestinal problems, I frequently ache all over with flu symptoms, I am losing so much hair that it's as thin as a toddlers, I have extreme muscle cramps especially on the bottom of my feet, I have had heart palpitations but the ekgs are normal and probably more that I'm forgetting. The only thing the doctor told me was you have very low vitamin d levels start taking 5000 mg of vitamin d daily have a good day and then she walked out of the room. I do have a question for you about giving children vitamin d because my 11 month old grandson gets sick so frequently like every other week with a cold or the flu and he is so small that he is the size of a 6-7 month old of course I don't know if this is even related to a vitamin deficiency. What age can you start them on vitamin d and should they be concerned?

What about with organic olive oil?
When I was diagnosed with MS 8 yrs ago I was severely vitamin D deficient. The neurologist put me on 8,000 milligrams a day. So clearly it's important.
I'm glad you're making these videos so people know they can help themselves. Not just rely on the doctors to " heal" them. That's not gonna happen.

Thank you Dr. Berry. I have done some inquiry into vitamin D and African Americans who routinely have strong bones and low vitamin D levels. I discovered that those with African ancestry store vitamin D in its active form not storage form. The D 25 I believe is a storage form test. Thanks.

My doctor has me on liquid D3, and she advised liquid. It was among the first things she checked on me; but I live in the great white north where everybody is D deficient. I also take a B complex, A, E and C. I have allot of health issues at this time. The general thought of the specialist is that I have non-hodgkin lymphoma. I had some extreme exposure to pesticides do to the work I did, so it is likely. I have had my fill of doctors and test now, so I have not been diagnosed at this time, and will probably never be; I will live or die with it, or not, but I try to get the immune busting vitamins in me since they seen the anomaly in the lymph. I have done the diet before back when it was Atkins, and continued ti have no weight problems until 10 years ago when everything went sideways for me. Hypothyroid, high sugar, nearly lost my feet last year... My husband and I completely eliminated carbs from our diet 3 months ago. I was desperate to get my sugar levels normal and lose weight. So, 3 months in, my husband has dropped 30 Lbs, he looks good, and I have gained 4Lbs. My sugar is closer to a safe level, but still not normal, and I discovered my toes turning black was not caused by the sugar. It is so disheartening to not only, not lose weight, but to keep gaining. I am no quitter, and I don't want to take the sugar meds, so I just continue. My spine is mangled, so I can't combine exercise because I can't walk without assistance. The lower spine damage is what keeps me from moving. Any advice you could give me to help get the weight off would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping that if I can get 100 Lbs off that I can walk again. I have discovered that I can bear up under allot of pain, since nobody in Michigan will treat pain, but when the stability is gone, it is scary. I don't want to fall down somewhere, and then somebody has to get the back-hoe to get me home.

I diagnosed with a level of 19( uk) 5 years ago. It was discovered after an endricrinologist did a "kets just see" blood test. Upto this discovery my body had been battling so many infections that I had even had surgeries. He recommended exposing myself to the sun for at least 10 mins midday. After 3 months of being prescribed D3 and exposure my level came up to 56. At which point the nhs guidelines said I couldn't be prescribed it, as it was at an effective level. My Gp had been on a seminar and said she was amazed at what she'd learnt. She advised I continue with it from the herbalist. I did stop for a while, my hair started shedding i was having the pains shooting up the centres of my leg bones and I started getting infections again. This was enough to make me realise how beneficial vit D is. I was so glad i was on it during covid.

Dr. Berry, you are so wonderful! I wish you were my doctor. Your patients are so fortunate! Anyway, I live in California, and in January we had a week long period of rain. This is great...but I tend to get depression more during darker days. So I upped my Vit D3/K2 supplement from 1 to 2 capsules a day (the most Dr. Berg says one can take is 4 capsules) and that is 20,000 IU of D3 per day that I'm taking now. Anyway, I had NO depression that week and haven't had anymore depression in general since then. I assume based on my personal experience that I was deficient in that. I wish I could get a Vit D test. I'll ask my doctor, but if she says no, where can I get it on my own? I'm also wondering if I should go back down to 1 capsule and see how that goes?

This is at least in part to see if D3 will help to moderate my immune system, having recently been diagnosed with a smorgasbord of autoimmune conditions - lots of symptoms, thankfully all very mild, but they add up! I am therefore doing this under medical supervision here in Vienna, Austria. Blood tested regularly, most recent showed 173ng/mol D3.
