      Sorry indeed. After all, Kenya itself is a multiracial country i.e. there are Kenyan Asians and Kenyan Europeans.
      Paying more at game parks etc. is however, not race-related. It's about a developing country charging those with higher purchasing power and foreign currency for continued conservation efforts and the country's general development.
      This means that if a Black Rwandese for example, shows up at this places they, too, would have to pay a higher rate.

    Bro in Kenya you need to bargain on the prices of everything that you want to buy outside stores. local buyers usually demand higher prices than normal so you will need to cut it down to the normal price by bargaining and learn some Swahili 'itakusaidia kubargain bana!!'

    Please please please dave and tracy, do not mind about the hateful comments you get from some toxic people. They do not represent the best of what we Kenyans are. My advice, just ignore the haters. If there is a way to block them from your channel do it but dont waste your time answering them. They will fade away by themselves if you dont engage them. Just do your thing and increase the dose of good vibes and haters will melt away like butter on a hot summer day.

    I think it makes sense for foreign visitors to pay more for certain things, tourist attractions, transport such as taxis or tuktuks etc etc. We have to understand that there are a lot of countries where the local population is not able to enjoy their own countries natural beauty or tourist attractions because everything is priced for the foreign market. For so long not just tourism but even wildlife in East and Southern Africa has been gentrified, reducing prices for locals and having foreigners pick up the slack allows for more people to experience and understand what is on their doorstep.
    There is a lot of nuance involved in ethical tourism and there's also no mistaking the fact that, like many other things in Africa, the tourism infrastructure was built around colonialism and needs to be modernised in a way that provides the most benefit to the country and all of its citizens.

    • @DaveMani
      @DaveMani  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      fair, i understand that :)

    • @charismao5515
      @charismao5515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly…great overview!
      When I travel to Kenya - there is a clear difference and privilege provided to foreign travelers - especially white people. Therefore, I choose to be ethical in a way that benefits the local economy and community. It’s important to understand the societal benefits of whiteness and the global structures it built for non melanated people - so you can consciously dismantle it (if you care to).

    Rwanda has been doing a better job of advertising outside of the continent, from sponsoring Premier League teams, to magazines to international media like CNN and at Airports. Kenya relies alot on word of mouth from prior visitors that's why customer service is emphasized and also to get returnee tourists, which is great really.
    But Kenya surely need to market to newer and younger clientele as well and from newer opportunity market countries as well, so yeah I concur with Dave's point.

    Two things I picked from your Q and A. The "double standards" in terms of pricing is not really that but a demarcation between citizens versus foreigners/residents. Citizens are encouraged to travel in their country at affordable rates and foreigners/tourists have to pay a premium for the same services since Kenya relies heavily on tourism. In fact, tourism is second highest in foreign exchange earnings. Secondly, I totaly agree with you that Kenya's marketing is lacklustre. A few times they have advertised on CNN but mostly they rely on international exhibitions in big foreign capitals to sell its products. KTB/magical Kenya is underfunded and obviously can't do much. To their credit, they have upscaled their domestic marketing and have encouraged locals to travel more especially in the low seasons and in this pandemic period. But still more needs to be done to encourage international visitors especially because they bring with them the much needed hard currencies that support tourism. This country is endowed and beautiful but it's undermarketed.

    • @emmanuelgathara696

      @@lizkimani9576 You can't travel without money. So they do have money. Plus, they might not be billionaires, but they have some chums. An average Canadian living in Kenya doing an Canadian job from Kenyan is earning a lot than your average Kenyan. Lastly, Alex can explain all he wants. It is the TH-cam comment section for God's sake, and his was well thought and insightful, I love coming across such.

    With respect to rates for lodges and hotels, Kenya does offer Resident and Non Resident rates. As you do live in Kenya you would fall under resident rates. Resident rates are offered to those that live in Kenya or East Africa to encourage residents to see their country.
