    Rock perfection. Enigmatic, emotional, powerful and commanding. The music is exciting and disturbing and utterly compelling. The musicians are astounding. I'm a drummer. A reasonable one! But I aspire to the level of Cardiacs' drummer. His timing is mathematical and sometimes unexpected,and so important for the rest of the band. He's so NOT just the man at the back who keeps time! He's playing a foreign language fluently! All the musicians are the same. Experts in their fields. It's as if a sine,cosine and tangents book exploded in Tim's mind and he made sense of it and arranged it into what we hear here and on any other Cardiacs' album. Superlatives can't do them justice. One of the world's best ever composers died when Tim went to sleep.

    I love the southern gothic vibe of this album. Not just the on the nose excerpts of them books/movies in the lyrics but the tiredness and despair in the vocals reminiscent of the times; but then there’s also that supernatural element present in the higher melodies, as though secretly contributing to and generating all of the misfortune
    And also the album cover looks like a meme and it’s great lol

      Not fair I want to be as free as this in music. Shouldn't complain tho, I do have freedom bands locally. I played bass for this band for fifteen years, who's attitude was similar to Cardiacs, kind of 'anti slick' 'great musicians but not flash', sort of thing, who weren't afraid to make a lot of noise if they wanted to. Currently trying to get together with a drummer regularly (drums/guitar) and just try n do something different. But it's got to have a pretty hardcore attitude, even if it's something played gently. Im Lucky that the drummer's on the same page musically. We both play in a 'function' band which (sometimes) pays, but have to occasionally get together and be 'free' musically. It's f***ng essential!

    This is Cardiacs' "Magical Mystery Tour" to Sing to God. There’s some good "excess" material from Sing to God time!

    • @JohnShadeLIVES
      @JohnShadeLIVES 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This was an evolution from the STG Era and material, no mere collection of leftovers. This showed the band stepping into new, unheard of levels of psychedelia that STG had but hinted at (we won't go into what Dirty Boy achieved here). It's a masterwork, up among the band's all-time best material.

    • @theobviousidentity
      @theobviousidentity ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah. This is an evolution in many ways. Not saying it's better necessarily, but Tim's definitely doing things here in this album that he had never done before. There are a ton of subtilties in the rhythm and harmonic modulation here that at this point feel second-nature to Tim, compared to Sing to God. It's a funny irony that at the time Tim's musical universe was the most fleshed-out, he was writing his most "accessible" sounding songs.

    • @Quinceps
      @Quinceps 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theobviousidentityYes and no. I half regret my earlier comment, as I do see the evolution in several tracks. But that comment wasn’t a statement about what Tim was or Cardiacs were, but simply an observation of their output at the time. They always had a tendency to produce a lot of material that never got released as part of an album or got a later release, or even a revisit.
      However, Gun is still a relatively weaker album compared to STG (within the heavenly levels of Cardiacs world where everything is damn good). This relative drop I think I understand somehow. They’re simply searching for their new incarnations. I think that new incarnation is better represented by the tracks in Ditzy Scene. So now I think Guns was probably more like the “Heaven Born and Ever Bright” to that LSD album I’m still praying for.

    • @Quinceps
      @Quinceps 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JohnShadeLIVESI half agree with this now, though the other big point of referring to Magical Mystery Tour is that that album contained a lot of unmissable stuff. To what you said, I’d add that strictly at an album level, they were still probing for that which would be fundamentally different in STG. I mean, Guns is a more consistently balanced poppy approach (there isn’t something like Eat It Up Worms Hero or Fiery Gun Hand), but for one thing, by the time of STG, you already had the use of female vocals in a similar manner as in Guns, and in some ways it’s like a more mature synthesis of their 80’s poppy stuff and their wackiness. I think that if there’s something radically new, then it’s already more mature in the Ditzy Scene tracks and in Vermin Mangle. I just wish that LSD came someday.
