- This is a general keyboard key replacement / repair video. Most laptop keys are constructed in the same general way. There may be slight differences in the Hinge Clip but for the most part, they are the same so this video should help you replace most laptop keyboard keys. FAQ's
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. Whats wrong?
A: If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would disassemble the key as seen here in this video and inspect for damage. If there is no damage, install the key. If there is damage, replace the key. Would you like help locating a key? If so, what is the brand and model for your computer?
Q: The Retainer Clip / Hinge Clip is not staying down on the Keyboard.
A: The retainer clip should be attaching to both the key cap and to the keyboard. If its not attaching to the keyboard correctly its because the keyboard pins are bent out of place, the retainer clip is damaged, or the retainer clip is not orientated correctly. If you cant figure it out by just looking at the clip with is hard to do sometimes, remove another key cap and compare the correctly installed retainer clip to yours.
Q: The Hinge Clips came off with the Key Cap. What do I do?
A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any component of the key assembly is broken, it would have to be replaced. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isn't really a good way to reattach the Rubber Springs. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

While I was typing on my HP Elitebook G8, the wobble "U" key popped out with its retainer clip suddenly. this is really helpful. I have an HP Laptop and the keyboard feels SO cheap. I had a basic Toshiba laptop before this and the keyboard was much more "luxurious" feeling even after I had it for 6 years. So these HP keys are getting stuck and I'm here to learn how to replace them.

That's the truth. My zbook17 was over 4K when I bought it over 7 years ago, and safe to say the cost didn't go into the keyboard. Used an external for years so didn't care, but have to use the onboard for the moment and it's awful! Will go back to external ASAP.

Thank you so much for this video. Five years later and it still works. My "D" key wasn't working well, so I decided to slowly open it up and check for dust/dirt. I saw a lot of it, but some of it was underneath the white pieces. I made the risky choice to take them off & once I cleaned underneath I tried to put it back together, but the two pieces broke off each other. After struggling trying to fix it, I tried to put it back in it's socket, but although the bottom piece was sliding in well, unlike you having to press the top to get it to click in, mine wasn't clicking in at the top, so I struggled with that by trying to put it in a different way. My "D" key is working well now and I'm glad because I already have to use an on screen keyboard for the "a" key, since it doesn't work anymore. I don't need to be using it for the "d" key neither.
Like everyone else I was also panicking when I couldn't put the keyboard pieces together & reddit didn't help with the worry either by saying the black keys cannot be placed back on, but I know it does pop back on if the pieces underneath is right.

@@afariam If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

Everything went well.
When removing the mechanism, I recommend applying pressure forward (from the touchpad towards the screen) so that the upper latches pop out easier

Thank you! My T key actually came off and I couldn't tell how to fix it. The retainer clip had actually snapped out and was inside the cap. I was able to separate them and then put it back together.

Brilliant ! My 'O' just popped off minutes ago and was left scratching my head as to how to fix. That bracket thingy was still to the back of my key so i gently pried off, reinserted back into the keyboard and popped the O back on. Thanks for the instructions - you saved me from a new laptop :)

Just got a new computer and needed to swap out some keys; and it's my first time doing this. I almost had a panic attack after I got the first key off and it was in 3 parts; I thought I'd completely broken the key! THANK HEAVENS for this vid!!! The camera zooms so we can see what you're doing, very simple instructions and explanations! Turns out I did NOT in fact break my key, the parts just disconnected from each other! This made things far less stressful, thank you for this!!

Thank you so much for this video, I took off one of the keys because I saw trash underneath it, thinking that as long as I didn't move the pieces around or break them i would be fine. No, I was not. The pieces moved and I could not figure out for the life of me how to fix it. Just the image at 4:18 helped me put the pieces together and place my key back in. Never doing this again, that was one of the most stressful twenty minutes of my life.

OH MY GOD!!! As a 3rd year IT student, I DO NOT understand why they do not teach us simple key repairs. Because this has been such a frustrating process! Other videos have NOT been helpful at all!!! I've spent HOURS, within multiple days trying to replace my S key.. This was the video that did it!!! Plus maybe buying a new key & hinge cause the old one just wasn't working & it wasn't broken. you have just saved me. my A button fell off my acer laptop and i was fiddling with it and afraid to further the damage. thank you so much for this tutorial! it turns out my issues was that the key came off with the retainer clip attached to the key so all i had to do was carefully remove the retainer clip from the key, put it into where it fastened on the keyboard, and then attaching the key from there was easy.

@@NikuiFR If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
