    - you are the master of time: you decide when to transition.
    - you force the opponent to create counter units, usually less efficient in the mid term
    - you can force the opponent to create specific units like skirms or monks and you already have a plan to counter those
    - you influence their strategies: for example by denying stone in late feudal, you know they can’t build a castle later. Or gold in early castle = less knights. Less wood = less food = less skirms
    - you can deny optimal TC placements
    - you can destroy production buildings
    - you can castle drop easily, at home or in the face
    - you can kill their hunts
    - at low and mid elo, it’s the fastest way to get a victory through psychological pressure
    - usually force the opponent to build a market and such losing resources and optimization
    - it opens routes for future imperial age raids since you know the weaknesses of your opponent’s base
    - it’s the best way to use mobile units
    - it’s the best way to take advantage of bad map generation for you, giving you time to wall
    - a third of the time, confident opponents will miss their quick walls, which will put them in a bad mood
    - you have the option of doing monk siege push
    - you have the option to hoang

    The chances of instantly losing as an attacker are pretty low unless you went full Hoang or TC drop and fail. Meanwhile, you can GG in a matter of seconds if you’re defending poorly.

    Hi Hera,
    I have been an avid consumer of your channel for a while and you have even talked to me on twitch a couple of times (which I appreciate greatly) I have recently started to play ranked and I lost all of my games so far (even tough i usually win my quick play matches with your wonderful MAA into archers BO). I think the reason I lose is because my oponents just have better macro and by the time I rush them they have pretty big walls or are fully walled and from there they just beat me by trurtling, going boom FC and having a better economy even tough I try to play really aggresive. I guess I should just work on my macro and army control but I wanted to point this possibility out for all of us begginers out ther.

    I think you shouldve started with the defenders advantages. I feel like most people understand the aggressive things that destroy them like controlling resources and forcing them to play reactive. But after watching a decent amount of pro matches, it seems like whoever gets the first successful attack off just wins the game. The only way for them to lose is by making a critical error, because they control the pace of the game.
    .
    Maybe I'm crazy, but I think most aoe players already understand the strengths of attacking, as it seems like the only way to win games on most maps. It's also why many of us enjoy playing team games, because teams can cover each other from lost tempo due to early aggression. I can't really think of any advantages to defending 1v1 besides in low elo where players don't know how to siege a base anyways and where the attacker will probably have tons of idle tc time because they are distracted trying to micro their attack.

    If you fail as an attacker, you just become a defender.
    If you fail as a defender, you most likely would just GG

  • @MrBulya
    @MrBulya ปีที่แล้ว

    I think something that you missed is that as the attacker I get to see what my opponent is doing, as I can see how does he react to my attack, what kind of production he already have and how does his economy looks like, so that I have more information for better decision making of what I should do at home. While the defender is more in the dark and only knows what comes to his doorstep, and has to guess what is the economy behind it, etc. So the decision making of the defender has to take more gambles when it comes to decision making.

    I was thinking a video like this would be sick! And the defenders advantage is also something I'd love to hear about. We focus a lot on fast ups but sometimes I watch MBL and going up later with skirms and eco and I'm like ah this looks fun too.

  • @LeicaFleury
    @LeicaFleury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've lost a couple of matches to full feudal age archer pressure and I could definitely use a "defender's advantage" video if you choose to make one, 11

  • @neildutoit5177
    @neildutoit5177 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about unit creation time? So imagine an extreme scenario like you describe where you make a lot of archers in feudal and don't use them at all in feudal versus an opponent who's all in on eco, means you're "falling behind" but the opponent can't just press a button and instantly convert that eco advantage into military. It requires production buildings and enough time to produce the army. If your army is scouts it will become useless eventually but if your army is say archers they can be upgraded. Now you have a big lead in numbers so sure your economy is worse but that's not going to matter as long as you attack before the opponent has caught up in army numbers which might only be much later depending on how hard he booms. This isn't such a big deal in aoe but if you play a game like Starcraft where units/buildings take super long to produce you realise that you have to start making them immediately or you'll just never be able to catch up you'll have all this res but you won't be able to spend it - I think even though it applies much less in aoe it still is a consideration no?

    Now talk about the Defensive Advantages...

  • @TheOrder96
    @TheOrder96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some great thoughts and tips! I feel like the attackers advantages are slightly more obvious than some defenders advantages, so I’d love to see a defenders advantage video!

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I feel like defender's advantages are more obvious. If you have a few walls down, you can defend against the attack with fewer and cheaper units, build your eco, run away to TCs and towers, make counter-units to slowly thin out the attack because your reinforcements arrive really quickly. At low level, defenders tend to over-react and idle too many vils and panic, but if your opponent is decent, you have to invest a fair amount of resources, time, and attention into your attack to inflict damage. That's why Hera says the moment you decide to attack, you're at a disadvantage, and you have to gain something with it (by killing vils, a disproportionate number of units, causing idle time, or buying time to wall up or build your own eco) to make it worth it.

    • @TheOrder96
      @TheOrder96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mbvglider Maybe it's all because I personally "feel" at a greater advantage when on the attack vs on the defense. Or that to me the obvious defensive advantages feel weaker than the obvious attacker advantages, so I'm hoping to learn some less obvious defenders advantages from Hera :D

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOrder96 A lot of times people feel totally badass when they’re on the attack and then forget to make vils or reinforcements and then it all fizzles out

  • @termint2113

    A very nice attacker's advantage is that you have the potential to force fights. You don't care that your opponent doesn't want to fight you if you are threatening to completely take them off of gold.

    Loving this new analysis style content. The only small thing I would suggest is to use gender neutral pronouns. While I am a guy and I know most players are as well, it never hurts to be more inclusive in things like language and pronouns. It will take a little bit of effort to work this into your narration, but it's going to be worth it.
