Once I stayed at a friend's house and the whle gang was reunited. We had nothing but a notebook and a pen, 'cause we downloaded some dice at the appstore. That was enough for hours upon hours of an improvised RPG session, which rules we improvised an worked pretty well. After that, it's become our custom to play like that whenever we can (with rules we have polished for this playstyle), so I'm all in for thetre of the mind online. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try it with them.

This is the online gaming video I wanted to make! Google Meet has served my groups well, sometimes paired with Roll20, sometimes with everyone rolling with actual sheets at home, and the DM having an extra camera over the battle grid when theater of mind won’t suffice. And I love the idea of using Google slides for maps!

This is exactly what I needed right now. I started a game mid-pandemic and we’ve been playing theater of the mind via Zoom with images screen shared but I’ve been wanting to add more maps and visuals but I don’t have a lot of funds to put into it. This video presents a lot more options than most videos. It was kind of hard to find though.

@@Trollstrolch Being a technical noob shouldn't be an issue. You certainly wouldn't miss out on anything that you could get on Roll20 with the same skillset.
There are paid hosting services for Foundry, you can get for ~5$/month. And in case you get better wifi or want to play lan-party style, you can always export your stuff from there and self-host it all. The subscription model at Roll20 that's closest to what you can do in Foundry (API access) is 10$/month.
All-in-all, Foundry will soon be much better as far as functionality goes (imo it already is, but that's on everyone to judge for themselves), despite only having been released last month. The only important thing that's still missing are offical licensing deals with WoTC, etc. But, again, it was released last month.

I suggest Roll20... Web application, so, no need to install any software... I tried FG but for the players (specially new ones) can be overwhelming to say to them: you need to install this, then this other thing, then create this accound, then configure this, then listen to the D&D rules... Roll20 has no compatibility issues, so player can access to it even from a tablet or cellphone (not the best option) and having less steps is always better: "go to this website, create your account, we are ready"

I go for the Zoom option, letting players roll their own dice and have their own sheets - and share lots of maps and pictures. When it gets tactical I get out the figures and battle map and share a web cam image; makes for a real 'fog of war' for the PCs, whose view can be obstructed. I'm also in a game using Roll20, but prefer the way I'm doing it (we have to use Zoom anyway to get the chat to work well for everyone).

A E to be fair to roll20 it didn’t take 2 years either but after that time I’m using advanced macros and api to speed things up and make it slick. Sure that’s possible on foundry too.

    • @uvsa2833
      @uvsa2833 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@CampervanCookout Yup, that's possible on Foundry as well. You can do pretty much anything with macros. And there are already a bunch of modules that implement nice stuff, especially for 5e, if your're into that. Like automatically checking for hit, applying damage, prompting saving throws, rerolling initiative every round,... . But what realy sold it for me is 1) knowing that enabling modules like that will turn this into the best VTT and 2) the compendium system.

Minecraft is stupidly useful. You can build exactly what you want, take videos or screenshots and share them with your players, the game is already in squares too. You could also theoretically create a server and put your players in adventure mode, so its almost as if they are quite literally in the world. The hardest part is actually being good at building in it.

This is slightly off topic, but might interest people who are new to role play: my friends and I have been playing werewolves on whatsapp. With a real-time day/night rythm. It can get intense and time-consuming, but each session only lasts a few days. Some elements of gameplays are dropped (like the little girl), but new opportunities also come with the format. Like players communicating in GIFs and emojis after a visit to the dentist, or campaign videos to run for mayor.

I've found running games online is a more intense and stressful experience as a GM. A whole load more of the load is put upon the GM, so I'm tending to keep sessions shorter (2.5 hours instead of 4-5), but my players are generally enjoying them as much if not more than face to face.

since DND has a lot of AOE and range stuff and cover... fights in theatre of the mind never worked out for us. - Not in fights where it's more than 1 enemy.
Player A: "Can I cast burning hands on the both of them?"
DM: - ya they stand close together.
Player B: "hey, but I'm in melee combat with them, don't hit me!"
Player A: "but I could get the angle to not hit him"
Player C: "wait, shouldn't we be flanking him anyway?"
    - the answer is NOT just leaving all these mechanics out of the game. The players really liked their stealth, cover and flanking mechanics. Don't take that away.
My answer: you don't need maps, but a very very rough sketch of what's going on and who is standing where. That's enough, it's not a lot, but it's VERY necessary.

Another way to use Photoshop is if you have the map loaded in a layer, add multiple layers for each room the players will come into, each layer gets its own name (Room number works best) and a fog of war black cover that only covers the room itself. Instead of erasing with a pen, you simply make the room they are in visible by making the fog of war that relates to the room invisible. Also, you can put traps on invisible layers that are coded with triggers so players who can see your screen will not know what the trap is until your turn the layer on and reveal it. It's a little extra prep time but it works well.

Problem with Dungeon Fog: free version with watermarks and three map max ain't good enough. World Anvil is great for developing and presenting a campaign, but a board (i have a vBulletin board anyway) works too as a nice cloud solution. But the World Anvil Team is very nice and friendly, have to try it a bit more.
Roll20 is nice to use, because as a vtt it works with nearly every system. Fantasy grounds seems more specific. Both are expensive if you have to licence your d&d 5e books again (and perhaps a third time for D&D Beyond). Good old times with the OGL from d&d 3.5 and all the fan projects...

Zoom for chat, scale module maps in GIMP2.0 or create in DungeonFog(free) - not a fan of the DM/Player interface though since I have to control all the player movement and view windows; its more like a live view as I edit, clunky. Just started up Roll20 (finally got a faster computer thank you gubment check), still learning its features, we did run a session last night and the players really enjoyed being able to control everything and I like being able to reveal already placed elements. Thinking about buying DF sub &/or Roll20 tile/token items - but this was mostly to keep the live group going. Once its safer, we'll start playing in person again. Now to add music to my Roll20 game...

Not exactly tabletop, but there is an online multiplayer game simply called Dungeons & Dragons online. We (my father, brother and I) always used to play with my uncle, go on Skype, and make a party in game. Just make an account and go

Funny enough, thanks to the pandemic I have more sessions than ever before. We were to 1 a month due to work and scheduling/family issues, but with all at home.... we manage to make 2-3 sessions a month (each). Trough d20, which I have a set up in a tv-table at home, the virtual session with a Skype video call has worked perfectly for all of us in the 3 groups I have (2 DMind and 1 as a player... for the first time in 18 years)

We only get 1 day a month. So hopefully something can micromanage because nothing beats playing with hand crafted/painted pieces like the ones my DM makes.

After a few years of trying to find a group im kind of done with it. I never even had the chance to have a group fall apart after 1 session :D but nevermind, CRPGs are looking better than ever and you can play that alone.

I've used Google Slides as my VTT for a few months now and it is so deceptively simple. It sounds ridiculous, it- shouldn't work, but it does for our group lol

i Personaly recommend MapTool for DnD Online sessions.
It is easy to learn and if you want to Lvl up your Experience you can use Syrinscape, Fog of war, and manny other Things.
Best Part in my opinion is the speak/Think/Point Mechanic on the map. your Mouse turns into a Speak/Think bubble that all players can see. NPC Interaction is Realy funny with this thing.
If you are a little into programming you can create your own Macros for diceroling or automatic Ability checks.
    ~sry for the Bad English...:D

Gonna try google drawings. My group seems to have trouble getting together. Usually because two of them have kids and another lives out of town.

Hi I am Brent Burns from the Rec Room Raccoon podcast and I just wanted to recommend the shard tabletop it is completely free and my favorite part is that if you have tons of pdfs of your books you can upload them to shard for free. Shard has maps tokens and a custom search engine so you can search for maps and tokens online. shard is my personal favorite and if you're wondering how my group talks we use discord just like on the podcast. P.S. Our podcast is not a D&D podcast it is a podcast where a few kids mess around and have fun.

No mention of d&d beyond ?
I'm not sure how it stacks up against the others, but I'd at least think it was big enough to be mentioned.

I have arkenforge love it and dungeon painter. I’m thinking of upgrading to fantasy grounds unity and possibly checking out a basic rule set and starter adventure for roll 20 . I’ve yet to get my group to play with me online might be time for a new group when I spoil them with all these platforms I’m forever prepping and dream about playing using D&D Beyond to really help me run the game . I just want to draw more of the custom maps for myself to use .

I havent tested it myself, but a solid free campaign manager is OneNote, just create a notebook, and you can set parts of the notebook as private, or have a players notebook and one for DM.
Btw I fully support Fantasy Grounds, its incredible, currently I play with a gang on a Rolemaster (Extremely detailed System) campaign and FG manages all just fine
