I was nervous because I haven't used Discord for anything this complicated before, but your video walked me through it wonderfully. Same. A lot of things to remember,although i respect those who do it. My friends and i play with zoom, everyone uses physical dice, and i share screen with a map if necessary. Easy as pie. No need to remember commands to type,different rooms in the server,etc. But as was said, some thing are not for everyone. I'm just happy there are so many ways to play online now
With google draw, as long as you know the dimension of the map, you can put any size map in google draw. File Menu > Page Setup. Change from Standard to Custom. Change Inches to Pixels. Then make the pixels the size as your saved image (can get from file properties). Insert Menu > Image > upload from computer. (you can also insert a copy straight from the URL of the image as long as the url ends in a image file extension).
hi, I have a role of DM as its my dnd server We play on, but it still only allows me to see the short version of the monster stat block and not the large one like you did with the Balor why is that please could you help thank you
You need to give yourself the role of “DM”. If your using my Discord template, it’s one of the roles. Otherwise you have to create a “DM” role and select it for yourself

Great tutorial. We've just started with d&dbeyond, roll20 and discord. Beyond20 extension with chrome rolls straight into roll20 and it's been working great. Going to try setting up the server more like yours. If you take the first level subscription on roll20 it works on all mobile devices.

Instead, I fought with Avrae tyring to figure out all the ridiculous dice commands, wasting time trying to get it to work right, just so I could somehow "simplify" my games when the answer was right here all along. Use your own dice, paste some pics to the channel. Next player's turn. The cut/paste option right into Discord is dumb-easy. I've been doing video via Discord because I have minis and terrain set up with one remote player who could care less. I'm going to try this, but instead of video I'll either cut/paste from the Internet or snap a pic of my table w/ my phone and upload to Discord. That way I can stop with all the nonsensical extension cords and plugged-in devices that suck down batteries.

Hello! Great guide, sir I really used all that info to build my DnD server, thank you! Just one question, is there any way to unlink Avrae from a specific dndbeyond character sheet? Being the DM I was making some tests and now every roll and check counts as if made by my testing character. I tried deleting the character sheet and reimporting avrae, but it's still linked. Thank you!
i know this is a late comment but i just noticed in the video since you didn't put a picture the server just showed as SMD lmao. i feel like that could've been on accident but if it was on purpose that shits funny
This setup works great! If you have a campaign on dndbeyond, you can connect it with avrae and do all the rolling on your character sheet and have it show up in the discord channel. A bit more fluid than typing it out (my players struggle with typos)

One thing I’ve found hard is following some of your other tips on avrae, such as adjusting monster hit points on the fly, or reskinning monsters, without it being obvious to the players what I’m doing. Any suggestions for how to handle either of those?
That's because D&D Beyond has no image for that monster. Best bet is to find an image on Google and use rolladvantage.com/tokenstamp/ to make your own token.

Trying to see if I can make a custom commands to also make easy-to-remember commands for other bots to play things like SFX and the like!

I added the rollinit alias but ran into an issue. When the monster attacks it doesn’t subtract damage from the player characters. The players can damage the monster but not the other way around. I’m not sure why it’s this way and maybe you have a suggestion?
Yeah, this gets into the integration of Avrae. If you want the monster damage to subtract from characters and vice versa you have to use Avrae's more full-functioning initiative system. It was too complicated with too many edge cases for me to use.

Less than 30 seconds in and I knew this was going to be a great vid. And I was right.
I think your indifference to how players roll dice is a very good way of showing newer players that D&D involves a lot of trust.
As DM, I roll real dice. As a player, I've switched more to using the virtual dice in Beyond because its faster, and my dice hate me.
I personally roll virtually but that's cause the dm can see them and I remember if I actually rolled or not

Is it safe to say this might be easier than Roll20 or does it just entirely depend on how "visual" youre trying to make it for your lobby?
I think its easier and there are other alternatives to roll20 such as owlbear.rodeo
Yeah roll20 doesn't work on phones at all, because the screen is so small and it needs a lot of memory
We used discord for voice and Roll20 for the maps and tokens last game and probably will again.

Avrae has gotten much easier now that you can channel D&D Beyond dice rolls straight to it. Type !ddb or !campaign in Avrae for more info.

Have you come across a die roller with a button GUI? Typing the text string gets in the way of the immersion.
I use the roller in D&D Beyond now.

That's because D&D Beyond has no image for that monster. Best bet is to find an image on Google and use rolladvantage.com/tokenstamp/ to make your own token.

Best bet is to find the “looking for Group” channels on various D&D Discord servers. You might also check out Reddits LFG for D&D games.

Avrae is too complicated, you have to know how to write code to use it.

I get a lot of "This monster has no image" when trying to grab tokens. Do I have to get the monster manual on DNDB?
Some monsters have no tokens no matter what. Others are only available if you own the book on DDB.

Would you possibly know how to activate an ability like rage for the barbarian on avrae?
I think this sort of thing needs a macro. I tend to recommend handling such things outside of Avrae. It can get complicated fast.
