Trying my luck here. I tried that, but when turning on my appliance, it doesn't turn on.
Any idea what it could be?

Check whether device is correct voltage for your country.

@@KSToh , actually the answer is that there was an bad wire contact on the other end of the cable too '^^

Unfortunate that the impression is given that you can buy any product back from USA and just change the plug to work. More important is the voltage. Most products sold for the USA market are 110V, cannot be used in Singapore, even after changing plug.
