I gotta know... did running without the air filter cause this engine failure, or was it just its time? Thanks so much for watching and hit the thumbs up button and subscribe for more if you enjoyed. You all ROOOOOCK!!! 🤘🤘
I would say she was almost due for a rebuild but the ultra free flow 5000 no restriction airfilter didn't help either. Part number is 000000, don't recommend.
@@MichaelSabo nahh there's no way it caused the failure. I haven't finished the video yet but if there's no scores in the cylinder walls or on piston skirts or in the bearings then there's zero evidence that it was caused from no air filter. The ECU would correct fueling for the "extra" air coming in. I'll correct myself if there's evidence of debris entering the engine and causing damage b

There is a better chance that it blew the head gasket because it was overheated at some time or multiple times. With factory tune they are a little lean in the middle and the radiator fan doesn’t kick in until 200 degrees. I would definitely consider upgrading head studs right away now that you have it apart.

I mostly enjoy the quad wars, and cheap quad challenge like Mike and sxs blog often do. But this is pretty cool too. I'm a dirt bike and quad guy, but the sxs scene is getting bigger every day.
Mike, it would be prudent to lock the cams so that when you remove the chain, they don't spin over due to valve spring tension. That prevents bent valves! That engine uses MLS head gasket which is not forgiving in any way. Machining the cylinder head and decking the block is recommended. Basically, the failure was a head gasket and TTY head bolts that allowed the head to lift during overrev. I appreciate people doing this with their Subarus on Vail pass since it brings revenue to our shop. Every one of them will have an ARP stud kit as opposed to TTY bolts, without fail.
S3 are a parts house in Europe (Italy I think), they started out with specialty motorcycle parts and have been steadily expanding into other markets :-) Big in the trials world.
Double shear rear knuckles started in 2022. I would do head studs and focus on the turbo and tuning if you want big power. I hope you get some good speakers. Stay with OEM axles and 32" tires. I hate how no common windshields roofs rear windows wipers etc. work with custom cages. Quads are so over, sxs life is where its at!
I did a lot of research on the X3 before pulling the trigger on my first pure sport SXS. The Rotax Ace 900 engines seem to be very well built. I would think they would have to be since some of those engines are classified to be used in ultralight aircraft chassis.
That’s bad ass that would be awesome to have with you out on a good long ride that would come in handy something like i’d like to hang out with you guys sometime and go riding and you can give me tips on how to make my banshee run a lot better. It runs OK but it could run better. I’ve learned a lot of stuff from watching your shows.
With the shim caps they need to be in the right order like you are doing. If they get mixed up valve clearances will get changed and you will have to re shim
@@MichaelSabo Yes you are correct no shims on a HYD bucket only need to worry about that if you decide to go to a solid bucket setup and I don't recommend it unless you plan on pulling the valve cover periodically to lash the valves. Good luck with your build. Currently in middle of a billet Whalen speed block build myself looking to make 500 WHP and brake shit😂
@@MichaelSabo yes 500 WHP IS correct with more still on the table to tap into. The guys over at Whalen speed are a amazing group of guys with a lot of knowledge on the Rotax and how to get the power to the wheels. Granted I'm pushing close to 20k in just the engine build but if you want to make power in a small displacement engine it takes money and a lot of it LOL
I vote that it was just its time to give. I'd guess the gasket was the failure point and when the metal expands, it lets antifreeze in. I say build the engine up some. It's already apart, you might as well do the internal upgrades now.
Still trying to get used to seeing you in jeans and a hoody mike! Lol, when you film at home it’s always shorts and a Tee. And the classic Parts exploding in your trash can. Thanks for the video, I’m on the fence with a sxs right now. Let’s see if you can sell me on it.
Multiple times you kept smelling coolant. I think it just ran hot to many times. Cylinder pressure went up as temp went up. Just a good old blown head gasket. Definatly need to check the head a deck for warp.
It was a 154hp first generation x3 engine. No filter, detroyed your turbski, and blee it all to pieces. Probably crack some ring lands and skirts as well. You can make 32k miles if youre diligent
Slapped the same turbo right on the replacement engine and it pulls 89mph - I've got about 8 hard hours on it since. Not saying it didn't do damage, and I'm no pro, but I inspected the rings/ skirts, etc, and it looks pretty dang good.
I would keep stock bore do some upgraded pistons and rods, arp head studs, maybe some cams, a bigger turbo, better intake manifold and a tune and you can easily make 300whp reliably. Even if you go all stock with just head studs, bigger injectors updated intake and a tune you can make around 250 whp reliably
@MichaelSabo Sick a YFZ. Really hoping you make the jump and purchase a KTM 525 Quad. They are so sick and rare which means expensive. Would be cool to see since not many have them.
"Let's see if we can get this engine apart just using the Tusk tool set" ... proceeds to use an impact and a hammer, neither of which are in the Tusk tool set ... lol
The engine is a great engine with stock parts. For more power you’ll probably need new fuel pump, turbo, intercooler, and some tuning. You need rock knockers, i believe that’s how you broke the stock wheel from a rock being thrown from the front tires into the back wheel.
I would have to say the no air filter didn’t help but I would think that the motor was running hot and with the great looking oil and filter the head gasket failed on cylinder 2
Last year when I got it out, and I was driving down the road it kept wanting to hop really bad, but once I started giving it more fuel, it came out of it, but when I run really easy on it, it just wants to pop a lot. I think the rubber between the engine and the carburetor might be Ruttin.
