      Agreed that it's unfortunate the tree is at the end of life. But on the positive side, removing this tree helps prevent disease or parasites from taking hold in the area and infecting younger trees of the same species.

      proper pruning helps.
      Many times, it starts to decay when someone leaves a long stub or an excessively large wound on a tree, and the rain and bugs enter more easily.

    • @ElectricityTaster
      @ElectricityTaster ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As long as you prune the tree correctly (less is more), I would look into proper watering and soil health. Decay is natural and expected, as most old trees are hollow. It becomes a question the trunk growing faster than the decay. Look into biochar.

      The difference is that we are not associated with a tree cutting service, so our recommendation is unbiased. In other words, we get paid the same regardless of our recommendation to remove or to retain the tree. As tree lovers, we always try to preserve native trees like this. This was too far gone.
      Many other "consulting arborists" work for a tree cutting company, so clearly they'll try to sell work.

    My mother's place has a very large black walnut. Twenty years ago, it was struck by lightning. My brother sawed off all of its secondary branches expecting it was on its way out and needed to block naturally falling wood as it hung over Mom's house. It had a visible crack at it's base all the way up the tree to as high as a person could see. It is still alive and growing, but it's walnuts are of poor quality every since the lightning strike.

    Tree’s need surprisingly little sound wood to remain structurally viable. You should share the empirical data you gather next time you recommend a tree removal!
    I think you’re meant to keep the drill bit fully contained when it’s receding into the housing, these tools are normally highly and expensively calibrated regularly!

    • @ElectricityTaster
      @ElectricityTaster ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. And most trees will put on reaction wood to compensate for the decay, as long as they have enough vigour. But there are important targets within the fall zone. The only real way to certify that the tree is safe is to do a static pull test based on the maximum load expected for the tree. Calculating how much sound wood is enough is very complicated and relies on too many assumptions, in my opinion.
      There is also the possibility of doing a canopy reduction and staking the tree to the ground like the snag in Blade Runner 2049.
