But this is way too long winded especially after covering wheel alignment a few times before. I love Edd but this new channel is boring. (Just my view)
couldn’t disagree more. I think I I understand where you’re coming from, given the contrasting bits with Mike as the hustler. For me, the guildmaster appoach is exactly what makes this stand out.
@@gavinwyllie7855 Opinions are like... ahem... tail pipes. We've all got one. I don't for a second think this is 'long-winded' or indeed 'boring' personally. And while he did an alignment episode on the Outspan this is totally different. This is setting up a car for a fast road/rally application and is far removed from correcting misalignment via component damage, he also used different equipment to do it. He even talked about the corner weights. Not all his content is going to appeal to everyone but this did to me.
I fast forward the dealing bits, it does not interest me. Look for a series (its old now) A Car is Born. There's loads of others too but Mark Evans set the mold for all these car shows!!!
I can't believe that under this sweet, polite and humble gentleman there's actually a beast of a rally driver hiding! Real life Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde 😁 Loved all the episodes. Hope you win many more races 🏁
Ed, for the lifts, the biggest thing to keep in mind is the load rating of your garage floor. regardless which lift you choose, you have to make sure the concrete floor can handle it and if not, possibly cut holes to pour thicker pads.
Had exactly this problem at the garage I worked at until last year.Another thing you see quite often is four individual posts which are positioned by each wheel and linked electronically.
3000psi concrete will generally support most loads on a four post system. 6000psi concrete is needed for a two post system. You won't find 6000psi concrete in most garages.
Sorry but I have to disagree with most of the comments here. The feet on my 2 post at work are likely a larger area than the footprint of 4 tyres sitting on the ground. It's just basic laws of physics of mass divided by surface area. Most 2 posts- or at least all those I've ever worked on- have square 'feet' at the bottom to spread the load and give a better position to bolt it into the floor.
This is why Edd’s channel is the best on TH-cam.. Great insight, great information and practical information delivered in a entertaining manner. Thanks Edd.
To all the people that are bored of the mini... there's nothing boring about it. The car itself might be boring but the trip along the way taught you a lot. If you didn't learn anything from this then you simply are not a proper car enthusiast. I hate mini's myself but there was very good information taken from most of the mini videos that a lot of people can relate to. For instance stripped threat and how to solve it. what do to with a damaged subframe to fix it and so on... Not to mention anyone here who watches that are into rally or would like to start up there own. This beats the hell out of an old, cheese grater of a rangy that should be scrapped but again even though I don't like the car (hate them in fact as they are pointless) I still learnt a lot on the actual work that was done.
Congratulations Edd, all your hard work & perseverance (ably assisted by Neil) on the mini has paid off....finally. With the car's suspension now accurately set up, I hope Neil can finally get to enjoy the car & fully shake it down before entering any rallies.👍👍
Edd excellent stuff as always. I weep when I see how clean everything is. Reality bites in my workshop. Rough floor etc. Still mustn't grumble. Just got my Jaguar suspension re done. Super brakes and drives like new now!!
I liked the bit at 29:00 regarding the problems of losing time during on-stage servicing. I'm back in England now, but in my distant youth I spent some time in Kenya [my late dad was with the Flying Doctors], and drove on the Safari a couple of times. It was a LONG event back then - day after day of car-wrecking misery. LOVED IT! Proper job! 😁 One year I was driving close service/support for a couple of mates (a privateer team of expat Brits), and on the final day we had all sorts of problems, eventually managing to limp back to Nairobi 11 hours behind the Group-B cars. The big works teams had whole fleets of vans, pro-mechanics, and even helicopter support, so we were completely out of their league, but the event was still an 'adventure for all' back then, and we low-budget club-level teams were given every chance to finish. Today's short sprint and super-special stage WRC events make a lot of financial and organisational sense, but I'll never forget grovelling about trying to find somewhere solid to stand the jacks in 15" of red dust as fine as talcum powder in 120°F heat and being told, "Come on, girl! We've only got a couple of hours to get this r*ddy clutch sorted!"
Sounds amazing! Hoping to finally take the 1916 Cadillac on the Peking to Paris one day. I imagine (hoping) Mongolia will throw up many of the same challenges.
I don't have a lift, and I agree the 2-post is the one that makes the most sense if you only have one. One positive for the 4-post not mentioned is storing cars. You can add an oil catch tray, the suspension remains loaded, and it is easier to park underneath it and still open doors.
Hi Ed love the videos, keep finding bits of text in some of them, found another one in this video on about instant gloves!?!? It’s says Instant gloves? What a brilliant idea; just imagine it suddenly gets a bit chilly in the workshop or perhaps the mere thought of an imminent dirty job is enough to conjure up a fresh pair of glove just when you need them. We think we’d might be on to something…
Edd. Have you ever seen the machines that make the braiding on the flexible hoses. They are a work of art and amazing to watch running. We made braided hose at the BTR in Burton upon Trent years ago would not know if its still made in the UK now, Cheers. 👍😀
Back in the 70s my brother fixed cars to top up his income. Rather than the lifts (too expensive) he built a pit in his garage, it took weeks to dig out, reroute all the service cables and pipes, pour the concrete ( he used a small mixer), install steps etc, but I can assure you a clutch change on a MK3 Corrina was soooo much easier. I remember prior to the pit we would lie on our backs, hold the gearbox between our knees, slide if forwards whilst trying to engage the motion shaft splines and all whilst wondering if the 3 inches of space was enough! 🙂 Fun in a strange kind of way.
@@steveosshenanigans Yes, well, your clutch never gives up the ghost on a sunny weekend in July, it hangs on until a wet weekend in the middle of February just to be annoying.
Nice explanation of corner weighting, although I once had a gotcha (I will own up to) where I forgot to check the tyre pressures first and yes a couple of psi out can muck up everything. Absolutely love WS Diaries a car show for car people.

For a home lift, I had to fit a 500 Abarth on the small end and a Chevy 2500HD onthe large end. I went with the 4 post DirectLift ProPark 9+. It is amazing and has also served as loading dock, scaffold, worktable, and paintbooth.

Its been APX 5 years since Edd left wheeler's and dealers!Edd I must say it's the best thing you ever did.why can't Netflix give you your own show?would u like to see Edd bk on our TV sets?
Ed, there are other good alternatives to the two lift options you looked at. Particularly for the DIYer in a standard or double garage. I bought a 2.7 tonne hydraulic scissor lift with 4 swinging arms. It folds flat under the car when not in use, enables doors to be opened, and has all the advantages of a 2 post lift but without the limiting factor of the 2 posts getting in the way. All for £1200, and its 240v single phase! Lifts about 4ft, perfect for a Mini in a double garage with another Mini parked in the other spot. We don't all have massive workshops!
As usual good stuff Edd & Neil. I wonder. Now that Neil has ragged the mini around the farm on his test drive. Had exactly this problem at the garage I worked at until last year.Another thing you see quite often is four individual posts which are positioned by each wheel and linked electronically.
My thought as well. I was researching lifts for my new garage. Two-posts have much more demanding floor requirements. Thickness, plus rebar.
3000psi concrete will generally support most loads on a four post system. 6000psi concrete is needed for a two post system. You won't find 6000psi concrete in most garages.
Ahh, see I was wondering about single post lifts... can I assume the load rating is unreasonably high for them?!
