I first listened to this group in 1953 on the Hi Lo’s first record - a smaller 10” long play vinyl record my brother owned. I was already a fan of the Four Freshman as well as a barbershop harmony quartet baritone. When I heard the Hi Lo’s I could hardly believe my ears. Formed by Gene Purling while he was living in Milwaukee, he added a local Milwaukee barbershopper to his fold, and they then relocated to the west coast and added the final two singers. At this point they started their road to fame. I have been an ardent fan since 1953 - I do not believe their talent level, harmony accuracy, or difficulty of their arrangements has ever been matched - as of 2024. Jerry T.
I was a fan in HS in 1957 while other teens were into Elvis? The talent and musicality is far and above POP music! The harmonies and skill is still above the skills of most pop music! Listen to ALL of their albums!
The vocalese section at 4:32 in "Yellow Rose of Texas" is the most uncanny thing from ANY vocal group ever. I challenge any group to pull that off as effortlessly.

I first heard them in the 1970’s and got chills. Still do now after all these years. Total vocal jazz perfection.

I know them well...very subtle but pronounced chords, closer notes than most other pop singers of the time....thanks to Gene Puerling.
Top notch act. I bet their night club routines were phenomenal. The short one appears to be the heart & soul of it all.
Love it! Thank you Simon!

I think that second song, Yellow Rose of Texas is the song that was played during the cafe fight towards the end of the movie Giant.
Who was arranger / orchestrator for the instruments?
Wow! And Paul Desmond on the sax solo??
途中のアルトソロはアートペッパーによく似ていますね。
