Oh god, this is such a difficult situation to navigate. Because it's totally valid for Hannah to feel that way. it's VALID for her to blame her mother, the person who was meant to protect her, for not doing a better job. She's just too young to understand how complicated the situation was.
I think the important thing is that June RECOGNISES that. She validates Hannah's emotions - "It's okay for you to be mad at me." She validates that Hannah's grown connected to her "new family", and places importance on her opinions about them. She's making her feel recognised, important, and valued. That's so important when you're dealing with a child in any situation, let alone where trauma's involved.

I feel really bad for Luke, but that scene of separation (again) between mother and child is way beyond that. But I can imagine how horrible it would be for Luke wondering and worrying about them both. I'm up to date atm season 4, though so there's a bit more light in the story (no spoilers)

^ And the terrifying thing is that there is nothing that has occurred in The Handmaids' Tale that was not taken from somewhere at some time in real life. For example, the nunneries and convents in Ireland were notorious for taking babies away from "sinful" women who bore them out of wedlock. Religious texts have verses in which it is arguably (based on sick interpretation) that a husband is allowed to beat his wife when she is disobedient. We see all of this in The Handmaids' Tale.

the saddest part about this series is the author who wrote the book said the following: "I wouldn't write a story that didn't capture things humans beings haven't already done to each other." Taking children by force from parents who love them has been happening for centuries...still happening today....we have enslaved people, forced people into sex trafficking, and taken away all the things that could matter to a person...WE as humans have done this to other humans....history isn't always such a pretty picture...we need to learn from it rather then keep repeating it..

Want to know the cold hard truth about that? Everything you just said is happening at our sourthern border right now, thanks to the wonderful cartels, taking advantage of an open border. You wont see that in any reports by 90 percent of the media, currently. All im trying to say, is that there are factions in this country obsessed with the illusion of systemic racism and other misguided social justice issues, while our border is ubiquitous with child abuse and human rights violations, but yet thats a “pro-Trump policy” of controlling illegal immigration, and that evil Trump was Hitler… right?? the hypocrisy of the current players in power right now, knows no bounds, is all im saying. You “Nessa” say we need to learn from it, rather then keep repeating it”…..I 100% agree, but all this injustice is happening at our border and among other failed policies of the current administration, not with freaking systemic racism or homophobic/ transphobic delusional victimhood and virtue signaling….For Gods sake… Im just tired of it. Except it didn’t happen like that at all under Obama. It was specifically in cases where the child might be in danger I.e. domestic violence, sex trafficking. Extreme circumstances only. They didn’t snatch children as standard operation. If that were the case then there wouldn’t suddenly have been a need to find more places to keep them, rent out hotels and build more camps. They would have had all of that already because that’s what they would have been doing all along.

This happens because America is no longer the land of open borders and immigration. You want to come hear go to the port of entry and apply for asylum or to the American consulate that is it. There are to many incentives to come hear when there shouldn’t be. You come here and get nothing aside from American freedom no handouts. Just like our ancestors and those ancestors before them. Nothing is free, you break American laws your get American punishment come here legally, a open door immigration and path to citizenship would be fine with me, as long as we give nothing aside from citizenship.

    • @dalbriggss
      @dalbriggss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is so important to have an organized/legal/bipartisan system for immigration. No open borders, apply for immigration going through the legal process to apply for citizenship. The cartels should not be getting rich off the backs of young children and parents.

It was the same tactic taken in indigenous residential schools in the US. Canada has already “unearthed” the graves of thousands of indigenous children who died in these schools. No one has begun digging in the US. I suspect that unlike the immigrant boarder issue- which one can explain the cruelty away by saying they shouldn’t belong here etc.- Americans can’t say that shit about indigenous us tribes.

Sorry to comment again - but this draws a parallel to a real-life story I heard once, from a North Korean defector. She told this story about how when she made the decision to run, her mother KNEW she was leaving. Call it motherly intuition; somehow she figured it out.
Anyway; she went out of her way to make her daughter strong enough to leave. She smiled, she told her it would be okay, she hugged her. The daughter got on the train to leave; and as soon as the train pulled out, she saw her mother collapse on the ground sobbing. Just like June does here. It really hit close to home, for me.

This didn't occur to me the first time I watched this scene, but it's so beautiful and important that June ran out of the house when she heard Hannah yelling for her. That was a mother's instinct to make sure that she wasn't about to leave her child in distress and make her okay with being separated again. Given that she wasn't afforded that opportunity the last time they were separated, she needed to be sure that Hannah left willingly this time.

Well Courtney Sheffield assuming you've watched Season 4 looks like you'll get your wish cos despite the fact that she loves Nick she still loves Luke and like I said in my previous comment Nick has been completely manipulated by her and for those of us who want the complete opposite it's so cruel as far as Nick is concerned as all he's ever done is risk his life to love and protect her where it's becoming more and more apparent that June used him to help her survive Gilead, which considering how she used Commander Waterford to get what she wanted it's not a surprise, the difference is Commander Waterford isn't in love with her, whereas Nick is! Considering how obvious it was how he felt about her she must have seen him coming a mile off! And, as unfortunately this looks like it'll continue in Season 5, I'm strongly debating whether or not to carry on watching the series and atm it's looking increasingly unlikely that I will. Just one final thing I want to add. Please let's remember Holly is Nick's daughter who he loves and he's not lost her to the Waterfords or some other family within the confines of Gilead, he's lost her to the husband of the woman he loves! But hey that's OK cos let's be honest Nick's a commander in Gilead and according to bloody Serena a founding member of the regime so of course he's not allowed to fall in love and have a child! 😡

@@courtneysheffield2950 The only reason I asked was bcos ironically I haven't finished it yet but, and, I don't know whether you know this, there's been a lot of rumours that Max Minghella might be leaving the series, and as I, as well as a lot of people don't want that to happen, I've been trying to find out about what the producers plans for Season 5 as far as Nick and June are concerned and from what I've read it's what I put in my previous comment which is what you wanted which is Luke and June are to be together and which is why I'm seriously considering not watching the series anymore for the reasons I've said. The way the producers have described it is that there are in effect "two Junes" the June from Gilead who's deeply in love with Nick and the June that's now in Canada and is back with Luke and I'm not happy with that scenario going forward. Despite the taped message telling Luke she's fallen in love with someone else, she's gone back to Luke, despite the fact that even Elisabeth Moss says the connection between Nick and June is amazing and special and Luke will never understand what she's been through she still goes back to Luke. To me it's like Nick is continually being kicked in the teeth and imo I've always felt the relationship to be slightly one-sided on Nick's behalf and after everything Nick's done for her I can't stomach even one scene between June and Luke let alone whole episodes and occasionally see June maybe give Nick five minutes out of her now free from Gilead life, that's if he's lucky and who knows how often he'll get to see his daughter! 😡

And she doesn't recognize her anymore. I wish I saw this earlier in the picture Fred gave June of Hannah. When June looks at the picture of Hannah June's face is reflecting in the picture of her daughter but her face was very distorted as if her daughter is starting to forget.

Lucky she had Nick there to support her emotionally which is all he seems to be doing more or less the the first episode! Even after that beating she took from Aunt Lydia over what happened with Emily early on in Season 1 he was prepared to risk his life to take someone he hardly knew away from Gilead! And June's been manipulating him ever since! Not only that but to make matters worse for him it's his baby that she's carrying and it's his baby that will be handed over to the Waterfords!

That’s unfortunately what happens with many children that get separated from their biological parents due to things outside of the parents’ control. You have to keep in mind Hannah was just a young kid when she got separated from June, and she was most likely fed lies and told June abandoned her by her Gilead parents. Hannah has no means of acquiring objective information about what happened and she lacks the maturity to understand just how difficult the entire situation was for June. Still, June handled Hannah’s resentnent towards her so well! I really commend her, I probably wouldn’t be able to deal with the situation

She's a child. She literally doesn't have the brain development to understand just how complex the situation was. In her mind, Mommy is meant to protect her. Therefore, if Mommy didn't protect her, that means Mommy wasn't doing her job.
It's totally valid and understandable for her to feel that way.

When kids are separated from their parents it’s not uncommon for them to grow resentment towards their parents as they are constantly being told that it’s their parent’s fault that they’re in this situation.
