freshman year being difficult is a topic that so overlooked
YES. i’ve never felt so out of place. i never knew how hard it would be to make friends and actually stay friends instead of talking to them during welcome week only and never again
not feeling like yourself in a new environment was the worst thing! when i was a freshman people would post a ton on social media of them "having fun" and i always wondered why is my experience so different... despite my internal struggles i learned so much about myself. freshman year is the year to REALLY put yourself out there but it gets better i promise!!

a girl from my high school class also went to IU and transferred back to a state school, don’t feel guilty for leaving, i’m glad you realized it and doing what’s best for you. trying to stay and make it work will not be worth it. i also transferred home and i was upset and lost a lot of friends from doing it at school, but now i look back and everything has happened for a reason and i can tell it was meant to happen. now i am at the school i didn’t get into out of high school and always dreamed of originally going to. obviously try to have some fun for the rest of the semester while you can but i just started watching your videos and i’m so happy you’re making a happy change! it’s so exciting ❤️

as a girl from a place like miami (brasil) that ended up in a school in the midwest - everything you're saying is SO valid and I can def relate to and understand. the midwest and the big college experience are not the vibe for everyone, and in a year's time, you're going to be so happy with your decision!!! you're way cooler than state school greek life anyways :)

I figured this was the video coming out next! I actually transferred to IU from another school. And I wouldn’t be having a good time if my fiancé wasn’t here. We literally just walk our dog and people watch 24/7 in this crazy college town lol. The Greek life stigma here is WILD to me and honestly entertaining. I’m also NOT a party gal and it’s all ppl do here. If it’s ur crowd, it works. But if partying isn’t ur thing, I totally see why u want to try something new. (Plus all ur other crazy and unfortunate circumstances). I’ve loved ur videos and can’t wait to see more wherever you go! Keep ur head up!

I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience. I went to high school in Bloomington but chose not to go to IU. I went to college in Nashville and so happy I did looking back on it. You are way too mature and sweet for those houses and those people. The people harassing you are either jealous of your success or just bored…or both. Just keep doing your thing. Your attitude, morals and values will get you so much further than any of them. Just stay true to yourself and ignore hateful people. They are the ones with the problem.

im so sorry that you are/had to go through this, im also a college freshman, attended school out of state, and also had a terrible and experience. I moved back over winter break and have been at community college for this past semester and it’s the best decision i have made !! can’t wait to see what this new chapter brings for you !!!
as a college student at cornell who didn’t rush i experienced something really similar. clearly the kind of people who are ostracizing you have nothing better to do. keep your head up and do your thing because you are way better off!! sending you love ❤

It’s so horrible how these people in small college towns are so small minded and clearly have no sense of real life or the world around them outside of their college life. 💝💝💝

@@TamaraAvinami I've lived in Indiana all my life, kid. Well other than a couple years where I lived in NYC and San Diego. And if you think Bloomington, of all places, is full of "close minded people" you just have no idea at all lol. IU is a fantastic school abd Bloomington is a great town and I know people who would kill for the opportunities you so casually throw away.

Girl I can totally relate to the last part and applying to schools once again, (I graduated in 2022 also) and just didn’t find the right university for for me, so I’m here applying again and I would have never imagined going through that process again! Aw Tamara. I was in EXACTLY your place last year. I came in freshman year so excited for Kelley and for IU and in return it all ended not in my favor. I came home and attended a college nearby where I am now going to transfer as a junior this fall somewhere thats a lot more relaxed & much less prestigious Indiana (Colorado State hopefully). Kelley was SO rough. I understand trying genuinely SO hard on a test and it always being unattainable.
Yessss felt that with the intensity of the classes too! But i'm glad you're happy with where you are now :)
@@TamaraAvinami I also ended up staying home for a year, doing online community college, and traveled to Israel, Turkey, Italy, and Spain! A learning experience that college could never give you! Enjoy your last couple months at Indiana as they, for me, were really bittersweet. And you're allowed to be upset & frustrated because you were so excited for it. It is truly unfortunate how many people that have been derailed off their course by Indiana.
I'm a transfer as well and just found this video after watching a bunch of your content- I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to feel like you're on a public stage being booed all the time while just trying to get through college. Proud of you for coming to this decision and I'm sure you will settle in wherever u end up!!

I have never seen any of your videos before but I am currently a freshman at IU this year and plan to transfer after this year. Everything you said about really hoping that everything would work out and then being the opposite, and thinking it was exactly what you wanted in HS senior year is exactly how I feel too. I can’t say I can relate too much to the ostracism you have sadly had to deal with, but I can only imagine how difficult that must have been.

I'm from San Diego, and went to school in Washington. I absolutely HATED it, going from sd to Washington was a bigggg change, it was a tiny college town where everyone only partied. I transferred to community college and I could not be happier. seriously best decision of my life!!!!!! You won't regret it

Hi sorry for responding late, but absolutely not! I seriously cannot express how happy I am that I transferred lol. I didn't have any good friendships there though, so it wasn't hard for me to leave. I would say just trust your gut, good luck!

girl i definitely feel you on this decision. i was at IU for a year and a half and it was not for me, and it was a hard decision to make to move back home. i ended up doing it for my own good. i wish you the best with whatever you decide to do from here on out :)

I lived in California my whole life and I went to college on the East Coast. I hated my school and I felt so guilty for wanting to go back to California. I transferred to a school in San Diego after a year on the East Coast and I'm SO HAPPY I did. Everything happens for a reason. Don't feel guilty for wanting to go back. I promise things will get so much better.

aw bby im so sorry i can tell this has been a rly stressful experience, im so glad ur changing ur situation for the better but it sucks that you have to. the fact that ppl have shit on you for the friends you've made because of popularity rly blows my mind, i can't believe that still a thing at a large university like iu. i literally made my college decision yesterday and at one point iu was my top school but yesterday i decided to go somewhere else, im gonna think it was meant to be. i hope ur last two months are a lot better, we all support you💗💗
Hey girl, I transferred home from IU Bloomington after first semester! I hated so many of the hateful/privileged kids at IU and I had to get out bc they gave me major ick. I completelyyyyyy agree with how u related their sororities/frats as high school all over again, in a not good way, and I didn’t even rush. It’s just so many kids that had their parents wipe their ass until their 18th bday and I couldn’t relate and that’s okay🌟
To explain the student body: my roommate and I (who came from the same town and with good morals) kept a running count of how many times someone couldn’t even hold the door open for us when walking in after them

So sorry you went through this. I went to IU and graduated in 2018. I had an extremely hard time acclimating from the beginning. Liked to go parties but also not the only thing I wanted to do. I went to high school in Tampa but I am from Chicago and promise this is not a general midwest thing (the judgementalness) but also agree on your comments about the crowd in Bloomington. I almost transferred sophomore year due to a variety of reasons such as major depression and anxiety, as well as just not being happy, but I got into a non housed sorority and I hate to be like “thats why I didn’t transfer” but I had 3 friends at IU and that was it. I already had acceptance to another school and everything so I was very close. Definately relate to your comments about greek life at IU because we were a “bottom tier” house and were looked down upon but I didn’t care because I found my place. I am so sorry you had this experience but proud of you for standing your ground and leaving to do what’s best for you. Best of luck on the rest of your college career, you will be successful no matter what!!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. I don’t think there are enough channels that talk about the toxic side of state schools like greek life drama/just college generally bringing out the absolute worst in people. From being in college long enough I think it’s just a given that when you’re in this weird transitional space between childhood and adulthood people either don’t know how to act or end up learning real fast. It took me two years to figure out that the expectations I had as a senior in HS simply did not fit the person I was and that I needed to lose the toxic bs, drama, habits, isolate myself and just do me in order to be happy. You should be proud of yourself for making such a major change!!! I wish you so much luck and love!

I never comment on videos but I just want you to know I’ve thought you were the coolest person ever for the last 3 years. I’m a current high school senior, and seeing you go through high school inspired me to be more social and try things, and seeing you go through the college process made it easier for me this year. I always hoped you were happy there but of course things don’t always go to plan. I think you are going to kill it at UMiami or wherever you end up. Your TH-cam and your ability to create is a gift not everyone has and I think it’s a good idea to be in a place of like minded people. Plus! Tan all year round! ur awesome girl keep slaying

these people bullying you online are so jealous and void of self-confidence. its such a reflection on themselves. you're amazing I hope you know that and no matter what, people who are insecure will find anything and anything to hate on.. it just unfortunately was you this time. I have been through a similar experience so I know how u feel girl. "its time to go" by Taylor Swift kind of describes how walking away from bad situations isn't a weak thing to do, its the strongest. walking away from something early when its not working out is such a brave thing to do and I just KNOW you're going to flourish wherever life takes you. IU has taught you some good life lessons I think, and you'll take it with a grain of salt in the future to make you an even better person. I recently transferred colleges because of the same reason you explained at the beginning of people being closed minded. I’m proud of you doing what right for yourself. You deserve the best!
This really is a prime example of you never know what someone is truly going through or what something is really like behind the camera. Although I can not relate to what you've gone through there, I can relate to wanting something to work out so badly and things just keep happening. My freshman year of college was horrible from the very beginning. I attended Purdue University (which is also in Indiana lol). I'm no longer there now and still trying to figure things out/where to transfer to. I was also accepted into IU and your videos actually made me want to go. I've been watching your vids wishing that my freshman year could've gone like yours, without any awareness of what you've been facing. People are jerks and you didn't deserve any of that. With all that being said, I hope you have an amazing time wrapping up your freshman year surrounded by those people who make you happy!

I’m so sorry about everything. No one should deserve this. You are so strong for sticking through to the end. I definitely agree location of a school has a lot to do with the community of people. I’m glad I go to college in NYC, which is a very open environment and has a lot of diverse people. I know not all schools with frats and sororities are bad but I’m glad I go to a college without them. I like going to a small school but i’m also glad my school has a campus. Like you said, a degree from a "top" school is not worth putting your mental health on the line. As a college student who grew up in NY and is now in aschool that is kinda closed minded I get where you are coming from (to a certain extent ofc). I’m so sorry you had to go through that that’s absolutely NOT okay. girl you don’t need to be in that negative space at all. you have so much more in life that’s coming up. the frats are embarrassing asf. greek life is absolutely not all fun and partying at all. I think you’re going to thank yourself later on for leaving and starting fresh where you feel 100% yourself. I was born and raised in Japan and I moved to the US for the college experience after high school but I’m moving back after being here for 2 years because I realized how incredible my home is. I relate so much to how you felt judged and not being your full self. transferring was a big fear of mine because I felt like a failure not finishing college in the US but you have to do what’s best for you! everyone is so different and wherever you go you will succeed girl. Omg Tamara! First better things are coming!! But this video could have not come at a better time. Ive been planning on transferring due to the social aspect, drama, and just the overall education aspect of my college. Idk this video has helped me to solidify my decision of transferring. It looks like not much has changed at IU in the last 15-20 years. Same toxicity, just in a new generation. As you accurately mentioned, despite the excellent academics and some great people who are actually there to learn, the toxic party scene really brings the experience down. By the time graduation rolled around, I literally booked it out of B-town hours after the ceremony as I couldn't take the environment much longer.
I'm glad you're presumably safe and sound now. You made a good choice transferring - your own "untraditional" journey will lead you to success!

The university I go to is JUST like this!! I can’t explain enough that ranking doesn’t even EXIST yet it’s still so evident like what? Literally how old are we. Girl, I am sooooooo sorry that you had to go through this. I went to IU 2021-2022 for my freshman year and absolutely did not have a good time. I was harassed by my floor mates in McNutt, constantly looked upon on as not good enough just because of the color of my skin. It was so cut throat that it made me sick. Greek life is terrible and so unfair, if you’re not a carbon copy of the standard, then you get treated like sh*t. I really hope you thrive from all this petty drama that is absolutely not your fault for having a platform. IU is a lost cause when it comes to the social life, but I wish you so much positivity!❤

staying close to home for school was probably the best decision i could’ve made for myself. i see u thriving wayyy more in florida than in the midwest. i live in the midwest and what u said about there being a lot of closed mindedness here is very true. it can be very toxic. all love tho and i hope everything works out for u and that you’re last couple of months at IU are good ❤️

I'm from the midwest and go to college in the midwest, but both were in major cities, so my experience was quite different. That being said, the people I've met who went to schools in college towns (including IU specifically) were very much what you described. Weirdly obsessed with greek life, acted immature like they were in high school, partied a concerning amount (I go to bars in my city but the things they casually talk about are genuinely scary, putting themselves in life-threatening situations), and overall seem pretty obsessed with conforming and judging anyone who doesn't. It's funny because I'm in my senior year and have had maybe 5 conversations about greek life at my school ever, and yet I met a girl from IU and and I think greek life was brought up 5 times in the first week. And they kept talking about high school, like sorry, I've moved on LOL. Anyway, sorry you had this experience, hope it doesn't put you off the midwest for good!

Hey, I'm a freshman at IU too and I think I've actually seen you around a couple times but I had no idea this was your experience. I completely understand what you mean by Bloomington having more close-minded people. I'm from LA so also a big city, and no one's judgemental at all of what people do. I've noticed too that influencers or things like that are less common and looked at differently in the Midwest. But I'm so sorry people here treated you like that.. I genuinely do not understand because it's not a big deal?? Maybe because they're not used it and we're both from large cities idk but it's still wild how disrespectful people acted. I also didn't rush for the same reason, I really didn't vibe w how greek life was taken so seriously (by some people). I'm actually transferring too for other reasons as well but I hope everything goes well for you next year!

I totally understand Tamara. I go to a Community College and have no friends at all from there. Some of my friends from high school go there but I rarely see them. I hope this video will teach me to turn to the correct people and I wish you best of luck with the new college search 💜💜💜💜.
