Casio Makes the Toyota Corolla of Watches... And I Like That!

  • Can you think of a car which is highly rated by publications like Consumer Reports but is regularly ridiculed in pop culture? How about a car which is relatively affordable, doesn't take a lot of time, effort nor money to maintain, has great fuel efficiency, is incredibly reliable, has been around for decades selling millions of models and STILL struggled to get respect from the car snobs? Well, that'd probably be the Toyota Corolla. Can you think of an equivalent in the world of watch collecting? Well, I think it's Casio. To me, it's a high compliment to both the Toyota Corolla and the products made by Casio to note what's common to all of them.

A digital Casio G-Shock with multiband 6 and solar charging is bombproof and maintenance free. It keeps time within a second for as long as the watch is regularly exposed to light. You buy a watch to tell the time and Casio watches arguably do this better than any other brand. So I totally agree with the sentiments expressed and I live in the UK!

Actually I find that Casio is by far the most respected quartz brands amongst watch enthusiast in most circles. I’m a hobbyist watchmaker, I love mechanical watches, I restore them. My interest in quartz and other digital watches is there, but low. Except Casios. Casios are great, they as a brand and their watches are just something else. I love my Casios and I respect this brand as much as any other prestigious brands. I’m fascinated by their tech and design philosophy

    Hello Mr.anderson
I own only 1 watch and it's the only watch I'll ever need. I have the Casio g-shock MTG 900D-A. I love this watch i wear it everyday all day even while sleeping lol. My job is a stock clerk at a grocery store. This watch does get tossed around and beat up. I couldn't be happier to have this on my wrist. It does everything it should. Plus with the stainless steel bracelet it looks good doing it and is very comfortable and durable. I plan on having this watch for many years to come. Thank you sir

Haters gonna hate. So, never apologise for your taste as life's too short. I too love Casio for what they've achieved and am deep into MB 6 and solar with a GW-M5610, GW9600, and a LCW-M100TSE-1AJF which I rotate frequently. All that said, high-accuracy quartz fascinates me and I could eventually see myself with a Grand Seiko GMT with the 9F movement. Oh yeah, the upcoming GR Corolla looks the business too.

Recently I bought a G-shock GW-M 5610. And funny enough, I enjoy wearing it even more than my GMW B5000 (the steel square) that did cost me 6 times as much. Sure I like high end watches. (As I'm saving up for my grail watch. A Rolex Oyter Perpetual.) But there is a lot of joy wearing a very 80's looking G-Shock that you never have to worry about. Solar powered, world time (I travel at least once a year, so it's a very welcome feature), shockproof and waterproof to 200 meters. So it's the perfect vacation watch as well. Whatever watch I might get in the future, G-Shocks will always be an important part of my collection.

I have never heard a disparaging word about Casio from any of them. The only verbal comments I have heard have been words of praise from their months of wearing one to two. I, for one, love my MTCM-900 and plan on keeping it no matter how many other watches I get. Another Casio that has gotten rave reviews is the Duro dive watch by Casio. As for Casio watches? They are king in my collection. So many options, most of them very affordable. Even the lowly f-91 is rather accurate. Add Bluetooth, gps or multiband and you never have to worry about your watch being wrong.
I came from the Apple Watch crowd a number of years ago. Those do all sorts of cool wiz-bang things. Bit, they are not good watches. They don’t show the time at every moment. And, even when you twist your wrist to get that time you are more likely to see notifications and a tiny time.
Casio watches are great. They show the time. They do what a watch should do.
I’m most found of the g-shock series. They are built like tanks. I’m pretty hard on stuff and they survive. I don’t really ever think “I should take my watch off to do this”. Not with a g-shock.
Anyway. Keep doing what you love.

As was mentioned below, Casio watches, especially G-Shock, are highly respected in watch circles. Most list them in the "God-Tier" of watches. As G-Shock prices have continued to increase up to the SEIKO level and higher, the snobbery has toned down. There are a few idiots on TH-cam that spew venom, but not many anymore. The Casios that are still relatively unknown in the west is the Oceanus line. Fantastic, luxury watches that you have to purchase out of Japan. I own 2 of them and they are amazing watches with Zuratsu polishing. Yes, they are quartz but all have solar power, Multi-band 6, and Bluetooth technology. These watches are designed to be on par with Grand SEIKO, but, because they are quartz, the snobs don't give them their due. They are also half the price of GS. Out of the 83 watches that I own, 32 are Casio. My latest is the MT-G B2000. This is as high as I want to go. No MR-G for me. My oldest is a DW-008 that I bought in 1994 and it runs perfectly. Only had the battery changed once, 2 years ago! As for Hollywood and G-Shock, you will see them on several action shows, including NCIS LA. Kenzy Blye wears what appears to be a King. BTW, you are responsible for me collecting squares! I now have 11! LOL

What I have often heard is: "The watches are great if only they were mechanical." And I then think: "Well, you don't really understand the idea behind Casio." They are meant to be accessible and reliable watches and this can only be achieved with Quartz and also radio controlled time synchronization. "Why do a lot of their watches have a radio controlled module? It only makes them more expensive but this is not useful for most of the people in the US." "Yeah, they sell globally. Europe has 2 towers, Japan has also 2 towers. There, it does make a lot of sense. Plus, it is not that expensive."

I have collected watch's for about 20 years. I am obsessed with knowing the exact time of the day just like you are. We know that a quartz watch wins in terms of accuracy. With that said there is something very special when a mechanical watch can reach a level of accuracy 2 sec + or - a day.
I recently bought 2 Casios one for me and one for my wife. I finally got the two watches set right (thanks to your videos) in about 3 days. It was a headache for sure. One of the watches is radio controlled and updates every morning. Amazing! I have a use for both mechanical and quartz watches. I do see a lot of snobbery in this area. It's just stupid if you ask me. I ignore it. I think I might give the Casio a higher rating than the Camry, it's such a good watch in many ways. I enjoy your channel a lot.

ive gone through a lot of casio watches growing up, after the bands give away, i wouldn't find replacement bands - which was the only issue.....after watching your vids, i did some research nd decided on a G-square(GWB-5600-2ER) which is solar powered; multiband and bluetooth enabled....this happens to be my first G-shock, i chose a square because the replacement bands would be easy to source....
i simply love th watch, it serves th purpose of a watch which is to
    - tell time (which is accurate always!)
    - display the day and date
i don't have to worry abt th battery running off or being delicate abt handling the watch....i simply wear it and not think abt it....i see myself wearing it for a very long time...your vids helped me pick this watch....your audience is different, keep adding new timepieces to your collection and continue making videos, we appreciate it!

    G'day Greg,
I agree with you 100%. Years ago while I was on leave from the Navy, I visited my Uncle to show him my new car; a Hilman Hunter. He had an old 10-15 year Holden stationwagon, which he'd rebuilt, repainted etc.

"Hmmm. This ole bus will still be running well after your new one is dead and gone.
That was a lesson I've carried with me for more than 55 years.
I once asked a fellow, why he'd spend thousands of dollars on a Rolex that would keep as accurate time as my atomic/solar Casio which I only paid LESS than $200.00 for.

Hi Greg, I love your videos! I think a big part of watches in movies is paid product placement. After all, James Bond wore a Rolex in the Ian Fleming novels, and Ian Fleming himself wore Rolex Explorer ref. 1016. Omega pays the big bucks to be on James Bond’s wrist, and to be apart of the Olympics. Likewise, Hamilton is big on product placement in movies. Swatch Group has the funds for sure.

you can still see casio watches in movies, the last one was the casio royale in Don't look up and you'll see g-shocks in action / military movies like Extraction, american sniper , Black Widow and The Guilty from last year, End of Watch, and the ae1000 in Mine.. i'm sure there are others but usually it's either military or something 80's or indeed as you said some character that's meant to be very bland or a scientist, which i'd say it's fair.. i don't know if it's disrespectful, it's a practical watch and it's usually portrayed as such.. looking down on practical /affordable stuff is more of a sign of our society that just reflects on the watch world too..

It's strange that some people don't want accurate time keeping in a watch! And at the same time they think a watch is garbage if it don't have "attention to detail" or it don't give right feeling of quality because the watch is to light!
In my eyes a casio is a real watch, because you use it as a watch. Many of these expensive watches are more like fashion items people wear as jewlery. Nothing wrong with jewlery, but the watch not a more "real" watch.

Hi Greg, I really like watching your videos and I’m new to the watch world so I have a question: what’s the deal about wearing two watches at the same time? Do you do it on a daily basis or it’s just for the video? I think you were not the only person I saw on TH-cam wearing two watches at the same time. Can you explain the reason, please?
    Thanks 🙏

    Hi Greg,
would you mind to make a video of your work career! I used to live in Phoenix Arizona for a long time before moving back to Germany, and your voice sounds darn familiar from the radio. Maybe I'm mistaking. You talk a lot of radio broadcasting , did you work in that field?
About the topic of the video: I was born in 1968 and when I compare the buying habits of me back then and my children today, we are world's apart. Back in my days as a teen, we had to take care of our stuff since it was expensive to buy new. Now lot of things are made affordable but only made to last a couple of years if only that long!
And with media like TH-cam kids get drawn towards things that their "heroes" have . And when that person has something new, the kids have to have the same right away to be cool.
Not that it wasn't like that in my days, but it was way harder to get.
    Frank S.

Sadly you are right about some watch oriented channels setting out to be abusive and hurtful. Luckily you can just not subscribe or like them and eventually they will disappear from the selections TH-cam offers you. It's a mystery to me too what these people are trying to achieve and more mysterious still why anybody else would bother watching them. Just for the record not all of us Brits are abusive and foul-mouthed :)

Greg don’t worry about the haters. There is a lot of the same kind of attitudes and language over in the “audiophile” community and and a lot snobbery and elitist attitudes. Some consider themselves experts on what “sounds good” when ultimately nobody can be an expert in that because its totally subjective. People argue about speakers that van play flat from 20hz to 20khz yet 80% of the people arguing can’t actually hear 20khz. I am constantly reminding myself who are these kinds of people and why should I care. You keep doing what you do and I’ll keep watching. Pun intended😂

Lux watches get all the hollywood praise and appearances cause they pay for it. I've picked my niece of solar powered watches and I'm proud of it. From my citizen promaster, to my dress Siekos and to my casio gshocks and Protreks. I love them all. As long as your having fun whats the problem?....other than your probably a guy whos sees his watches as an investment and never wears them so you feel you need to defend that investment 24/7 on the internet.....ugh. Thats the one thing I can't abide. The watch collector who never wears his watches outside the house cause he might scratch his investment.

It's interesting. Watch preferences expose what's going on in the mind of a man. You are pragmatic and secure and love having tools that contribute to the creation of the things you love (movie production/live broadcast). I respect that.
And when people ask you about your watch, you could give them a water-tight case as to why you own it.
Most collectors have no clue as to why they buy their Omegas etc.
I bought an Omega because I was seduced by the glossy pictures etc. I also knew that it would impress the weak minded. And it did. So premium watches can also serve a purpose. If you want to create an impression with a certain crowd of people, you wear the appropriate watch.
    Examples:
    Film production meeting: Casio
    Sales job interview: Omega
    Healthcare meeting: Smart Watch
High end restaurant / Hotel: Rolex
    High School reunion: No watch
But if you don't want to be judged either way, wear an Apple watch or a Samsung Galaxy watch.

which one of the toyota corollas you had do you like most ? i wonder, same about the casio watches. your 20+yo toyota corolla you have driven for 400000miles, what was worn out on that car ? i think if it served me so much for so much time, i would have repaired it and kept it. a new comfy seat in it and it would have felt like new.

Pay no heed to the influencers. It's how they make their money.
Watch collecting is an intensely personal hobby. The watch you wear the watch you buy is only meant to please you and no other.
If your only purpose in owning a watch is to receive compliments, maybe it's not a hobby for you. But then, if you visit the reddits of CASIO and G-SHOCK, you will find a whole host of people that enjoy showing off their durable low-end electronic marvel's and even their high-end ones as well and even those that make excellent mod's.
So if those channels annoy you, just UnSub from them. They are not worth your time.
So fear not, Greg the humble Casio still has its place among those that enjoy watches just because they are watches.

As I stated in my post above, I own 83 watches. Casio, Seiko, Invicta, Citizen, Vostok (Love them), Timex, Pagani Design, San Martin, Steinhardt. I think that's all. I got the first compliment I have had in years last week and it was from a girl working the Mickey D's window. She liked my San Martin sub homage. So yes, buy what YOU like to wear and don't worry about what others think. They aren't buying it for you.

I drive a 10y old Toyota Avensis. I wear either a Seiko 5 series or my Gshock GW-B5600 (my most expensive one is a Hamilton Khaki Field Manual) . None of those items I own nor wear to impress anyone. Someone once said: You can drive the best most expensive cars and the finest clothes but there comes a moment when you need to reveal your true self when you open your mouth (conversation). I prefer to be judged by the latter.

A lot of people make a mistake and confuse watches with jewelry. A watch is a device to tell one what the current time is with as high degree of accuracy as possible. Jewelry is for bling and to create envy in others.Completely different thing that can be married together but...why?
