The fact that I could actually see the feet helped. Some ladies had long pants and it was difficult to follow. Leads, don't press the left thumb on the follower's right hand. Sometimes followers complain of bruising of the hands from thumbs pressing down hard (especially when new and nervous). The thumb isn't needed to maintain the connection having a relaxed hand will do.
You need an unpainted wood floor, so you can shuffle and slide. You need to wear shoes with leather soles and rubber heels. Suede works, too. Not flops.
I really Iike the Forward - Rock - Step verses 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5,6. For me- your feet are slightly moving with the word, “ and” - so it’s really an 8 step, right?

In West Coast Swing when the lead moves back, the follow moves forward. The Carolina Shag is more like an accordion both dancers move forward towards at the same time and both go back at the same time.
I don’t mean to be impertinent, but why is the “and” not counted as a step? And terminology like rock- step is confusing. All exacerbated by changing from a 1 and 2 3and 4 to forward forward nomenclature also is confusing, to me at least. I have never had any dance instruction of any sort, so it would be helpful to start at the very beginning by defining some terms, how to time the counts, how to recognize the beat of tge music with which to start. And some other various rudimentary issues before even talking about steps. I am an old guy with no particular ingrained or natural sense of rhythm. However it does appear most of the songs are in 4/4 time, but there are 6 steps...my mind goes to cognitive dissonance with that. Again, none of this is meant as criticism, I am just trying to understand. Thanks
I completely understand, Dave and appreciate the question :) We all understand and grasp concepts differently and musicality/nomenclature is especially tricky. You're correct. The songs for Shag and most Swing (East and West Coast) are 4/4 - so 8 steps does 'match' better'. It's tough to try and cover many variations in such a short video... Rock Step can also be explained as 'March, March... Change Weight... Back Step... When teaching, I try to not only include the 'technical' or traditional terminology, but other variations of descriptions to hopefully help a wider range of learners. When teaching children - and some adults - I simply use sounds. i.e. " Dah, Dah, Dah - Dah, Dah, Dah - Bom , Bom". Seems silly, but it works well. The Mind/Body connection or neuromuscular response is what counts... how we hear things and then how our body responds. All that to say, I'd love to help a fellow 'old person' out and If you'd like, we can arrange a free virtual session to clarify anything you'd like! When I learned to shag at Fat Harold's in the mid 90s it was 1-8 steps. Then it was 1-6 steps with "ands". My new girlfriend and I took basic lessons a month ago and the lady was saying "rock step." It confused my girlfriend but when I started teaching 1-6 with "and" she picked it up quick. Thank you for this wonderful and patient teaching!
