My former neighbor was an usher at that game and him and the other game day staff sat there drinking it up too. He told us he was hitting and punching folks too. He also snapped some photos of the melee with the camera he had bought while in the Navy (he was deployed to Vietnam) and showed us some of the pictures too.
I was there, it was crazy. The video clip failed to mention that, that game started the ban on beer being sold past the 7th inning and the restriction of 2 beer max per person. I remember using a quarter and nickel and came back with a tray of 6 beers. Ahhh, the good old days in cleveland. That restriction has carried over to other sports. I was at the Warrior game last night and could only buy 2 beers at a time for the 4 of us.
Ya gotta know what your doing. For a 8pm game you pick the boys up and are at the stadium at 6pm with a case on ice. Then as the game gets boring by the 4th inning you reveal to the boys you got a 1/4 oz of blow in your glove compartment and all 4 watch the last 3 innings at a titty Bar. That's a sucess story. Lol
ah, the time of the romans. we're never going to have that now thanks to political correctness and stupidity from leftist pussies and right-wing morons.
The Seventies were the last great time in the west, before Reagan and Thatcher began stealing from the people to feed the rich. Elsewhere too: look at pictures of Beirut or Kabul or Tehran in the 70's- young women in jeans and make-up, a distinct shortage of religious idiots.
There was a 10 cent beer night in Milwaukee in the mid 70's. I just remember people drinking so much that we stacked empty plastic beer cups together into a snake maybe 50-75 feet long. It is the Milwaukee BREWERS after all......
I haven't laughed this hard in awhile watching this video 😂 I have a 10 cent beer night t-shirt that I got for my birthday a few years ago which was exactly 4 years to the day June 4th 1978 😏
I just now found this video. Cracks me up. I had a favorite bar during the '70's and they had Tuesday mixed drinks fo .29 cents (for which I set a record of consuming 27) Thursday was draft beer night, with .25 cent drafts and .79 cent pitchers. Everybody went home drunk, but nobody went nuts.
That night it was a full moon. In the ninth inning a fog drifted in the stadium from Lake Erie. Oscar Gamble hits a triple with go ahead run. Then all hell breaks out. Cleveland lived up to its motto: The Mistake on the Lake. However, the same year there was a promotional jiggle played on local tv stations which sang out "The best things in life are right here in Cleveland.....
Good on the Cleveland players for helping the Rangers fend off a horde of drunks. Next time I pay too much for a beer at an event, I will remember this game and let thoughts of the alternative relax me.
I'm A Texas Rangers Fan. The Rangers Announcer for TV -- Tom Grieve -- hit 2 HR in that game. It was one of his 2 multi homer game in his below average career as player. He said it was the biggest mistake in promotion ever made including Disco Demo night. He said he recalled having to defend himself with a bat against several people before escaping the field.
The disaster would be when families are there. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I wouldn't want the kids in the middle of a cloud of weed smoke getting high. They shouldn't have to be exposed to that, nor should any adults who don't want to get high.
Imagine a 10 cent beer night game in Philly if the Mets, Nats, Braves, Giants, Cowboys, Redskins, Lakers, Celtics, Devils, or Rangers showed up to play. Everyone would’ve forgotten about this Cleveland incident.
Can't give the fans free alcohol or anything that can be thrown. The difference between the general public and cattle is that cattle have actual value.
Like I'm here glad the Cavs won their first title last year glad the tribe was in the World Series my uncle decided since I am now a fanatic Cleveland sports fan and I am here saying wow the curse was so bad like this is just sad... like it's no wonder someone did it die ok and now I'm googling the 99 cent beer night at the Cavs old stadium in Richfield I wonder what happened there!!!!! I'm only 12 and I love my city even if we have a river that catches on fire, even if this 10 cent beer night was crazy I still love Cleveland but WOW!!!
was at that game and it was all the Stadium Organists fault plus alcohol . a guy ran on the field naked then the cops started chasing him, the organist started playing the Lone Ranger Chase song and that erupted into chaos everyone started going on the field then...
Who had the idea that 2 persons could handle the potential demand? AND WHO HAD THE 10 CENT IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE?! That's like setting a time bomb! :'D
I am surprised this has not happened more often. There would never be enough security to hold back 15,000+ fans storming the field at once to revolt and cause havoc. I hope it never ever happens. Just think of the serious injury or even death that could happen? Scary!
This sort of thing occurs regularly at soccer stadiums in Europe and South America. That is why whenever you see a soccer match in Europe, there is a moat, a fence and a division of police in full riot gear to deter the hooliganism.
1:40 through 1:49... Maybe Billy Martin should've considered the sage advice from Mark Twain when he supposedly said, *"It's better to be quiet and let others merely assume you to be a fool, etc."*
Just about all team managers would call their players in for their own safety if fans storm the field, but Billy Martin? Hey guys, grab some bats & let's start clubbing the fans 😂😂😂
Was this game televised locally in Cleveland, or back to Dallas/Fort Worth, and if so, does any footage of original live TV coverage of this riot exist?? Hopefully, if this game was televised in either city, footage of that riot from the original telecast can be found and posted on You Tube.
+altfactor I wish it had been televised back to Texas. We caught very few games on TV back then....a few Astros games a year and even fewer Rangers games. However, I was listening to the game on WBAP, the Rangers flagship station and I remember Dick Risenhoover, one of the Rangers announcers saying what was going on. Nowadays all Rangers games are televised. I wish they had been back then.
I think only the richest teams had home games televised in the mid-70's. The Yankees and Cubs did. Plus there were usually only 18 or so road games televised for most teams. Usually on a Friday night and Sunday day. A Eastern or central time zone team never had a night game played on the West Coast televised. And the NBC game of the week had so much more quality to it, than a local broadcast. Most local broadcasts had no slow motion cameras. So different now. I did get a chance to talk with former Rangers outfielder Tom Grieve who said that Billy was a terrific manager when he was with the Rangers.
you say the richest teams televised home games but out west the Dodgers & Angels never did. It was such a different time as us vintage people know. Only road games at rivals got tv back then.
Not many fans can claim to have a stolen base in their stats.
Yea, you think some cop or security would have seen at least one of them going out the gate with a base.
+jesusisnotallright s Chief Wahoo!? Old school! Great reference!!
jesusisnotallright s LMBO!!🤣
@jesusisnotallright s Good one!
this is why beer is expensive at a ballgame. you can thank Cleveland.
But that story is worth the expensive beer. That was hilarious!
dbag0584 You drink alone YEA all by yourself. Cause when you drink alone, you prefer to by yourself.
My former neighbor was an usher at that game and him and the other game day staff sat there drinking it up too. He told us he was hitting and punching folks too. He also snapped some photos of the melee with the camera he had bought while in the Navy (he was deployed to Vietnam) and showed us some of the pictures too.
Or you can thank the teams for paying 350 Million dollars for a baseball player. That's why its expensive
Oh get real the reason why beer is so damn expensive because of these outrageous amount of monies they're playing these ball players
I just can't believe nobody died.
I find that hard to believe. Like, bats where flying around.
"Didn't even stagger me. He hit like a girl." Hilarious!
RW32285 i was dying when he said that
Dan Coughlin is a legend!!!!!!
Well that person was probably pretty hammered.

Nice!
What's amazing is to compare the 10 cent beer night with the $12 beer night at most ball parks these days.
so you were out $50 for those two beers, right?
@UC84WDRxYFLt_pOyZ4dvZGdg $14.50 Stell Artois 12oz Beers at yankee stadium. F you and your shit team.
Ya gotta know what your doing. For a 8pm game you pick the boys up and are at the stadium at 6pm with a case on ice. Ahhhhh...The Seventies.
Ahhh... The Seventies. A decade of mistakes.
ah, the time of the romans. we're never going to have that now thanks to political correctness and stupidity from leftist pussies and right-wing morons.
The Seventies were the last great time in the west, before Reagan and Thatcher began stealing from the people to feed the rich.
Elsewhere too: look at pictures of Beirut or Kabul or Tehran in the 70's- young women in jeans and make-up, a distinct shortage of religious idiots.
@@Spectrescup Carter supported the Iranian revolution
There was a 10 cent beer night in Milwaukee in the mid 70's. I just remember people drinking so much that we stacked empty plastic beer cups together into a snake maybe 50-75 feet long. It is the Milwaukee BREWERS after all......
John Perrigo Milwaukee seems like fun.
Phobic. Beer flows like water in Milwaukee lol
Thats standard practice at a cricket match in Australia or England. They have a long time to drink, mind you-7 or 8 hours.
Tuesday was 10 cent taps as well...crap beer..but hey, grab the change from your pocket, and get hammered..lol
How has this not been made into a movie? 1970's, sports, alcohol, fighting?!?! The casting would be epic!
With $12 beers now it won't happen again. I'd go broke first.
The conspiracy is working...
COST YA $300 JUST TO GET NICE!
"These kids were so drunk, the game was really not important"
It never was important.
"Don't mess with Texas" more like, "don't fuck with Cleveland"
This would have never went bad if it was 10c joints.
Now imagine the spectators hot boxing the entire stadium
Players going into the crowd to smoke with them and people are unmoveable objects when they are high as fuck
Distorto Manipulo I don’t even think the game would’ve been finished that day.
Ppl sharing snacks & talking about aliens lol
Yea but don't try that in an indoor stadium if you don't want quite a haze to develop.
The antidote for poor ticket sales. Stage a ten-cent beer night (for a ten-cent team).
This is the greatest sports story of all time
This happened in 74 but the footage looks likes it's from the 40s
10 cent beer night haha classic
THE GOOF WAS THEY DOUBLED THERE MONEY ON EVERY 8OZ CUP OF THAT GARBAGE BEER STROHS. EVEN ALEX THE DOG SIGNED A 5 YR DEAL WITH " OLD MILWAKEE"
I READ ALOT OF THE PROBLEMS AND FIGHTS STARTED WHEN THEY STARTED TO PISS RIGHT WHERE THEY SAT. PISSING ON THE GUYS LEGS IN NEXT SEAT
You have love the 70's. I'm particularly partial to Mike Milbury going into the stands and beating a fan with his own shoe.
I haven't laughed this hard in awhile watching this video 😂 I have a 10 cent beer night t-shirt that I got for my birthday a few years ago which was exactly 4 years to the day June 4th 1978 😏
We need another 10 cent beer night for the sake of dank memes.
Gotta love Cleveland my hometown
1 of Americas Ghettos to visit on my "crack" Bucket list
Lol
Even at 36 years old I'm still discovering incredible stories like this!!!! Absolutely pi**ng myself laughing
Looked like a fight between 2 Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs. They raised hell and had a good time.
A bunch of closeted fruits on motorcycles. Motorcycle people deserve nothing but pain and agony.
I was a happy drunk who got tossed a few. Times for sex in the bathroom. Dont make me a bad guy
This really needs it's own 30 for 30.

I must admit not many people would admit to having causing a riot.
The AL Central feells like an insane party
The funniest part of this- the organist playing “Take me out to the ballgame!” the whole time! 😂
Imagine he starts playing "Ole anzy" with tears streaming down his face
49 cents today when adjusted for inflation.....
Normal price at the time: 65 cents. Adjusted for inflation, that's $3.22 but you pay more than double that for a beer at the ballpark these days.
hell, 10-12 dollars for a tall boy at a concert...
IronMaidenDoD 14 for a micro draft brew where I live
Whatever the cost adjusted to inflation, can one imagine if it was $1.00 a beer night today?
Damn I love this city. We have the most messed up and embarrassing, and I love all of it
O WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FANS?!?!?!?! DRUNKS OF CLEVELAND!!!! UNITE!!!!!
Man i Love Cleveland.
Amen to that! The greatest sports fans in the world. The cavs 35-22 going to the nba finals. The indians have one of the best rotations in baseball
This would make one hell of a movie.
The first time went great! Let's wait for the heat to cool off and we will do it next month!
This is the inspiration for walking dead
Whoever said you don't mess with Texas got a lesson in humility here. Cleveland literally messed with Texas. Good job Cleveland!
Old Billy Martin ate those words lol.
Paul Ramirez Hey dumbass, it was a joke. I'm sorry your team got dumped on.
Joshua Brooks I have heard some say that Ohio is the next Texas so... 🖕👌😉
Looked like raiders vs. San Francisco,. 70s. Spearing, late hits and ejections. Real football.
Good on the Cleveland players for helping the Rangers fend off a horde of drunks. Next time I pay too much for a beer at an event, I will remember this game and let thoughts of the alternative relax me.
That is fucking hillarious
I read about 25 chicks shit there pants! Oh my God
I was listening on WBAP the Rangers old flagship station
These men must be very proud.
My former neighbor was an usher at the game that night and was punched in the face during the game.

I love my country.
The funniest thing is they tried the promotion again.
One of the greatest moments of MLB history. Even if it was dubious.
From prohibition to 10 cent beer night, America’s really run the whole gamut.
Now, this is why Cleveland can't have nice things.
They have the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers world championship.
Hey I'm 12 I have to live there and I love it look at my other comment
They should make a comedy film based on this.
Horror/comedy
So in other words, this was the Pacers-Pistons brawl of MLB.
Considering how watered down the beer is, 10
Cents is an accurate price though for what you get
Omg! That's world domination!
Someone today needs to try $1 Dime Bag Night..........................
That will be a disaster waiting to happen.
Maybe the Colorado Rockies will. lol.
Metalman200xdamnit what would be such a disaster about that?
The concession stands would run out of hot dogs and the fans would be asleep by the 7th inning lol
The disaster would be when families are there. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I wouldn't want the kids in the middle of a cloud of weed smoke getting high. They shouldn't have to be exposed to that, nor should any adults who don't want to get high.
What could possibly go wrong?
Remember the article in the Detroit papers
I remember. The Detroit Free Press AND the Detroit News!
Imagine a 10 cent beer night game in Philly if the Mets, Nats, Braves, Giants, Cowboys, Redskins, Lakers, Celtics, Devils, or Rangers showed up to play. Everyone would’ve forgotten about this Cleveland incident.

beer + 18 yr olds = PROBLEMS
Probably one of the many reasons why they raised the drinking age back up to 21.
Well, wasn't that a smart idea, David?
todd krager agree
Baseball. The [self-proclaimed] "America's Pastime". In reality, it's fighting, beer-swilling. Getting arrested.
MrShobar this was a one-time event 40 yrs ago.
Oh hey I went to kindergarten with Bob Golic's son. I remember he wrote a poem for class about how many ribs his dad could eat in one meal.
Is his Dads name Joey Chestnut Golic?
The TH-cam channel Weird History, took his version of this story from this video
Oakland Raiders should have a .50 cent beer night see what happens
Love ESPN'S take on this
Good times in Cuyahoga County!
was at that game and it was all the Stadium Organists fault plus alcohol . a guy ran on the field naked then the cops started chasing him, the organist started playing the Lone Ranger Chase song and that erupted into chaos everyone started going on the field then...
just wanted to see the flasher who tried to kiss the umpire.
Today's story is brought to you by Schlitz. "We weren't always garbage, we swear!"
I would like to see this whole unedited game on TH-cam...
When baseball was fun!
When being an Alky was respected
One can imagine what the outcome would be today if it was $1.00 a beer night.
Who had the idea that 2 persons could handle the potential demand? AND WHO HAD THE 10 CENT IDEA IN THE FIRST PLACE?! That's like setting a time bomb! :'D
Dan Coughlin seemed to be overjoyed at recalling this.
DAMN!
Bob nutting will probably have to do this to get a full crowd at pnc Park in Pittsburgh.
I am surprised this has not happened more often. There would never be enough security to hold back 15,000+ fans storming the field at once to revolt and cause havoc. I hope it never ever happens. Just think of the serious injury or even death that could happen? Scary!

"they tried it again a month later" LOL
Malace at the palace? That's cute.
Mason Topping a video of that event brought me here lol
"Uncle Nick" brought me here.
love bill veeck
They tried again a month later?..... Are you serious 😂😂😂😂
The biggest surprise IMO is there were only 9 arrests. How is that possible?
It could have been worst if it happen on June 6... The 30th anniversary of D-Day
Almost as bad as disco demolition night at Comiskey Field a few years later
Can anyone find the original broadcast
How much would be 10 cent beer be in 2019 dollars?
Seriously in 70s Beers at shea were $4;50 and today $12;50 so multiply x 3= 30 cent beers
Ok 28.3 cents to be exact
Cleveland.........
6 bucks, 8, TEN!
1:40 through 1:49... Maybe Billy Martin should've considered the sage advice from Mark Twain when he supposedly said, *"It's better to be quiet and let others merely assume you to be a fool, etc."*
And trust me they do
I was 2 then.
Just about all team managers would call their players in for their own safety if fans storm the field, but Billy Martin? Hey guys, grab some bats & let's start clubbing the fans 😂😂😂
I wish I could’ve got drunk there
Of course Billy Martin was there for this
