I have nothing but bad memories of the Pentacostal church. I remember being fearful as a child watching people speak gibberish, fall on the ground and convulse, satanic panic, conspiracy theories, armageddon etc. This fear followed me everywhere and in everything I did as a young person. Now as an adult I see the church as a emotionally manipulative mad house.

If you research and read translation by actual clergy/rabbi that speak greek and hebrew you will see that faith healing, speaking in tongues, tithing etc is all lies. TH-cam rabbi tovia singer....explains with scripture in detail about these lies.

@@VoltedSoldier You should do your own research and I am stating this in a nice way not trying to be rude. I am Pentecostal myself, I follow the Old Path not the Liberal Path. All of the things that you stated that a rabbi said it was all lies are actually not and are in the bible. First you're listening to a rabbi which doesn't even believe in the new testament or Jesus being the Messiah or son of God. Tithing is actually in the Torah which for us is the old testament. In Genesis Jacob literally made a pact with God that he was going to give the tenth percent of what God would give him if he blesses him. So is not a lie, jews are actually supposed to do tithing themselves. That's why God was calling his people thieves in Malachi ch 3 ver 8-10(in others book too God has called them thieves.) Speaking in tongues is in 1 Corinthians ch 14 ver 2-5, which explains that speaking in tongues is to speak to God not to others and no one knows what is said for it is mysteries of the spirit but it can be interpreted its in the same chapter. Speaking in tongues is a gift from the holy spirit. Healing by faith is also in the old and new testament. Read exodus 15:26, 23:25, psalms 107:19-20 plus more. In the New Testament 1 of Peter 2:24 , John 14:12 and more. So, after reading those passages let me know if you still believe they're lies :).

@@carriechapman2365 It is mentioned in Matthew ch 17 ver 14-18. A man from the crowd went in front of Jesus and stated to save his son because he has epilepsy and suffers terribly and Jesus reprimanded and a demon came out of the boy and was healed from that moment forward. I apologize if it made tou feel a type of way but whomever saud that to you should've had backed it up through the scriptures. The things that are said are said because it is written in the bible. Not saying that everyone who calls themselves a christian is one or knows about the scriptures, but that's a whole other topic. May God bless you in your journey.

I attended a Pentecostal church at an invite. Believe in God and have accepted Him in my life long ago etc …. Loved the community feel of the congregation yet the preaching was “off” and more showy and all the chaos made it hard to concentrate. Also wow. The music was uplifting yet also distracting with everyone dancing and prancing and grinding everywhere. In between my community and Baptist churches for straight up teaching I visit weekly I’ll visit them one more time

A man went to the Pastor of his church and said, “I won't be attending Church anymore.”
Pator said, “May I ask why?”
He said, “I see people on their cell phones texting and typing during the service, some are gossiping, some just aren’t living right, some are sleeping, some are staring at me, they are all just hypocrites.”
The Pastor was silent. Then he said, “Can I ask you to do something for me before you make your final decision?”
    He said, “Sure, what's that?”
He said, “Take a glass of water and walk around the church two times and don't let any water fall out of the glass.”
He said, “Yes I can do that!” He went and got the glass of water and walked around the church two times. He came back and said proudly, “It's done.”
The pastor asked him these questions; “Did you see anybody on their phone?; Did you see anybody gossiping?; Was anybody living wrong?; Did you see anyone sleeping?”
He said, “I didn't see anything because I was so focused on this glass, so the water wouldn't spill out”
He told him, “When you come to church , you should be just that focused on God , so that you don't fall. That’s why Jesus said, ‘Follow Me’, He did not say follow them.”
Don't let your relationship with God be determined by how others relate with God. Let it be determined by how focused you are with God.
    AMEN

One cannot truly teach how to speak in tongues but guide not necessarily teach how to receive the Spirit as the original apostles had. This has never stopped, just had to go underground If you will.
The Holy Spirit became the Spirit of evangelism throughout the world, first using the apostles then the early believers until CHRISTIANITY became the Rome chosen religion and when pagan religious beliefs diluted the teachings of Jesus and the apostles because of many racism and bigotry of the Jewish troublemakers.

@Matthew Pace Ok... let's play your silly little game, shall we?
I agree that all religions are evil and poisonous to us and to the earth... we can agree there...
Then you misrepresent the golden rule, which by the way, is older than judaism and xtianity... so again, no problem there..
Then you go on to say that all the world's bibles are full of god's truth mixed with satan's lies... here we have a problem.
If the bible is corrupt.. then where do you get your information about your god? The bible is really the only source.. the entire story comes from the bible, as full or error and contradiction as it is. However, without the bible ie: the torah and the rest of the old testament and the new testament, you don't really have any extrabiblical information about god and jesus etc... so how can you believe, without the bible? You have lost me here...
Then again, since there is no good credible evidence that a god (or gods) exist, and also no good credible evidence that satan exists.. there really is no need to play your silly little game, as it is a moot point. You can assert this crap all you like, yet, there is no foundational truth in what you claim.

It dates from the early 1600s... and was created for the church of england... and is based on the textus receptus, which themselves were a translation by earlier scholars. He could have gone back to the oldest texts we had, but he did not do this.. therefore, it is not the best translation out there... thus, more apt to be mistranslation etc... in other words, not the inerrant word of god, now is it?

My Grandmother was married to a Pentecostal preacher that did tent revivals throughout Texas. Her mother was black Dutch and her Dad was Irish. She married the Pentecostal preacher (an Indian and Eastern European Blend). My sister was Pentecostal and is now Charismatic. We were raised in California and everyone goes to River or Bethal type churches there in her family. I wish I could be like her. She is SO hospitable and fun loving. None of us have as large, close knit, families that seem so happy. They got something right! But I never heard you aren’t Christian if you don’t speak in tongues or prophesies from ANY Pentecostal relatives. So maybe you’re not getting that part right. My Grandparents were church of God and my Sister is not.. they all love music and worshiping. I think her children are more cool young types that practice all the gifts and are kind and artsy types that are not rigid or uptight. Sweet people. I wish I could be that good and gentle natured. My experience would say they are of great faith and sweet, modern people in their eras.

I went to a Pentecostal Church. The main book that they care about is Acts. I was baptized there, not in the name of the Father , The Son and the Holy Spirit, like Jesus taught, at the end of Matthew. As I was coming out of the water, they tried to coach me into speaking in tongues, but there was no one to interpret it. I watched them coach people repeatedly. Young children and teenagers especially. I had only went to that church for 2 weeks and they asked me to be baptized there. I had already been baptized, and the name of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. The woman there, wore dresses down to their ankles and wore no makeup and didn't cut their hair. People ran around the room. I'm speaking about adults. I no longer go to any church. I read my Bible at home. I really dislike organized religion. I love our father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

We attend mass every week and don’t behave any differently, treating mass with reverence since we are receiving the Eucharist. However, we attend prayer meetings with other Charismatics where we pray in tongues, sing worship songs with our hands raised and we faith share. A lot of people don’t realize that Catholics can be Charismatics too and always assume we are Pentecostal so I thought I would share what it’s like. God bless!

I was born and raised in the Pentecostal tradition, I worshiped in other mainline evangelical churches in my 20's and became convinced that the work of the Holy Spirit had been neglected in the traditional mainline churches. I am now 55 years old, and I love to see the Spirit of God move in the church just as described in the book of acts. The Holy Spirit empowers the believer to live the life Christ has called us to live. Yes, the Spirit of Christ is with us to fill us and empower us today. And, nowhere in scripture does it say these signs and wonders should cease. If you believe Jesus emptied Himself and became flesh, and He himself was empowered by the Holy Spirit (anointed- Christ- messiah) to do the will of the Father, How much more should we seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit? When the crowds gathered to ask what the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as all about Peter preached the "This is That" sermon- they were cut to the heart and asked, "What must we do to be saved?" Peter said, ""repent and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the Holy Spirit. IT'S REAL FOLKS! IT IS FOR US TODAY LET GODS WORD CONVINCE OF THIS TRUTH

Me too, have seen the move of God and experienced it first hand.BUT i noted due to greed of the people other spirits have been invited in many churches to lure people with miracles, signs and wonders with a spirit of divination. The Bible says we test the spirits but how do we test a spirit that we have allowed to operate in our midst for long, unless we seek deliverance.
Even the charismatic and Pentecostals don't operate with the same spirit.its as though those with deeper anointing are competing.each side calling the other false.
My point is ; are we able to give a clear direction to Holy ghost outpouring before illuminati takes full control.
And is exorcism part of the game because i have seen many pastors trying to question demons in the process of deliverance and they get answers from the demons.
I used to hear people say " if you inquire from a witch doctor you will be told your relative has sent you a spell",is this any different from what we are seeing in Pentecostal churches?why do they listen to what evil spirits have to say knowing well that is "deciever".

Ryan, thank you so much for your diligent scholarship and hard work in putting these lectures on youtube. I grew up as a missionary kid in the Assemblies of God (pentecostal) denomination and I am currently an AG minister. I think this summary of the history of the pentecostal movement is brilliantly done. I don't understand why anyone would feel like you are being critical of charismatics or pentecostals. We who have grown up in the movement are very aware of its excesses and faults (or we should be). I'm so glad I discovered your youtube channel. I also enjoyed your lecture on the Great Schism. I'm hooked and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. When someone begins to read scripture and are baptised in the Holy Spirit. They begin to understand why Jesus did what he did. We begin to understand why he came, We begin to allow him to mold our lives into being filled with the spirit. Without holiness you will not even see God. Holiness and being filled with the spirit helps us become a more mature Christian. When the devil comes around you, you know how to deal with him. It also helps you see the miracles Jesus is doing around us. This helps you grow stronger in the faith.

@Reactionary HermitI will never be Catholic ever again and I certainly will never attend another apostate Protestant church as long as I live. You can pray all you want for me but I will seek to live closer to and follow Jesus Christ alone and NO MAN. That means no pedophile priest or pedophile pastor who was appointed by man and not God. If you believe the Catholic Church is the only church then why all the pedophilia and abuse that still exists in the church? Don't tell me that it exists in every church because that is nonsense. God has always had a remnant of believers who have not been corrupted by religion and the apostacy and well his true children are either stuck in bondage to religion or have come out of religion and apostacy period. You can not be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and follow man and his wicked errors. You either follow them or you follow Jesus. It's time for you to repent and leave the Catholic Church and go home and pray for discernment and read your Bible. Stop letting a priest or anyone who isn't led by the Holy Spirit tell you what to believe. Better yet repent of your sins first and accept what Jesus did for your way to heaven.

When I received the fullness of the Holy Spirit I spoke in beautiful unknown languages, however, what happened to me a shy inward man, was remarkable! I became bold and started to preach Christ crucified to everyone. Acts 1:8, you shall receive power and be witnesses...
I got my family saved then many others! Some became Pastors of large churches.
    What happened??? Power!
No wonder Apostle Paul asked the question in Acts 19, “Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?”
Why even ask the question if we receive it at first faith??
My recommendation is that you experience this Pentecostal experience instead of just studying it.

Personally if I could define the Pentecostal movement, as one raised in it, it’s this.
We wanted to figure out who The Holy Spirit actually was in the Trinity, rather then just some outside invisible force who doesn’t play much of a roll, and then from there learn how to implement Him into every area of our Christian lives and faith according to what had been taught in the scriptures.
It’s pretty significant considering we brought the Third Person of the Trinity into the very serious place of relevance where He rightfully belongs. Being that He is just as much God as Jesus Christ Himself.
But make fun of us if you want... haha, considering all the other denominations haven’t seen a Revival in over 120 years but we have ushered in that Massive 500 million Christians number, I would call that a “Massive Revival” and the next massive Revival that does come will definitely build off of the foundations laid by Pentecostalism.

    • @eyeswideopen2536
      @eyeswideopen2536 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Surely the speaking in tongues was just a way of telling the gospel to foreigners.
As for the trinity - Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
God made man in his OWN image. Man is mind, body and soul. Whats not to get.
Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth which is of God and is God
God = Jesus = Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit was the gift left by Jesus for us after his death. The kingdom of God is now within those who wish to access. Just have faith, repent of sin and be holy. Oh look another trinity.
Read the bible for yourself. DO NOT RELY ON SOMEONE ELSE FOR YOUR SALVATION.
You read, you become the priest to your temple.
Hurry up. His holiness will return sooner than you think
      Glory to God

I suspect you need to be part of a more structured, historically rooted church. I see parallels between the Church of Jesus Christ - LDS and the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. LDS has a President and a Prophet, parallel to a Pope or Patriarch. Historically, is a central city for the worldwide church - Salt Lake City, Rome, and Constantinople /Istanbul. The church relies on a hierarchy of authority with power and responsibilities delegated to bishops and ministers. There are core texts - the Book of Mormon, the Holy Bible, the writings of scholars like Thomas Aquinas (Roman) and the Patristic texts (E. Orthodoxy).
I grew up Episcopalian, converted to Roman Catholic, and have finally settled in as Eastern Orthodox. I have always been part of a global, historically grounded, liturgical, Christian church. I have just been working my way back to the earliest origins of Christianity and have found that Eastern Orthodoxy is the most historically authentic Christian church. It contains so many treasures, mostly little known in the Western Hemisphere. Speaking of Pentecostalism, the theological disagreement that finally divided Christianity between Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox after 1022 years(!) of fundamental agreement was over the role of the Holy Spirit. This is still very important with the Orthodox seeing the Holy Spirit as absolutely vital, coequal to Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic interpretation is the Hoky Spirit is the love proceeding from the Father and the Son, connecting them together and therefore not coequal with the Son.
Churches are filled with fallible human beings, so I'm accepting of human flaws through the centuries. But the more cellular, modular structure of the EO Church has made it more resistant to waves of heresy and apostasy through the millenia.
Salt Lake City has a magnificent EO church I toured via TH-cam as part of a young Christian seeker's channel's exploration of E. Orthodoxy.
I believe it was St. Philip who instructed St. Andrew to "Come and see!" Give your local EO Church a try during a Saturday evening Vespers service ir the Sunday morning Divine Liturgy. Probably best to attend one with a predominantly English language service. We adapt the Liturgy to each language, with Orthodox missionaries having translated the Bible into Innuit when spreading the faith to Alaska in the 19th Century.

Thank you, Professor. I appreciate your sincerity and desire to be balanced. This was the first I have heard about the "fourth wave," and from what little you said, I'd like to see myself as part of it. I'm involved with Presbyterian Reformed Ministries International (formerly Presbyterian Charismatic Communion). We don't mind identifying ourselves with the third wave, but we would lift up people like John Wimber far more than Benny Hinn or Kenneth Copeland. In fact I'm surprised that Wimber and the Signs and Wonders class at Fuller Seminary was overlooked in this very good presentation. That seems to me to be the genesis of the third wave, and a more faithful expression of it.
As academic as we Presby's tend to be, you wouldn't be surprised to learn that there is a good bit of what you identify as "fourth wave" going on at PRMI. We trace much of our teaching back to R.A. Torrey and finally and foundationally, of course, Scripture.
For a great overview of this perspective -- which I think you'll find to be exegetically solid and having theological integrity -- I'd recommend "Growing the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit" (Zondervan) by Brad Long, Cindy Strickler and Paul Stokes.

I grew up in a very ritualistic religion and had no issues with it because I didn’t know the difference until I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the necessary evidence of speaking in tongues in 1974. It was an incredible, joyful life transforming experience that till this day my passion and love for the Lord and His word still burns. Since that time I could not be joined to a denomination. Charismatic comes from the Greek word Charis which means the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Charismatics believe in signs and wonders and that Christians are saved without the glorious Baptism in the Holy Spirit. However, I equate the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is to the Christian walk as gasoline is to a car. I can’t imagine being a Christian without it. I would encourage people to read Another wave of Revival about the powerful Azusa Street move of God. There is much misrepresentation and misunderstanding about the Charismatic movement so I would encourage people to seek Him and focus on the Lord and ask Him to guide you into a deeper relationship with The Spirit of Truth. I appreciate what you said at the very end of this seminar about the vast spread of this movement.

What confuses me is the amount of pastors and TV evangelists who claim the Gift of healing and prophecy, yet they all teach opposing fundamental paths to Heaven. You have the oneness penticostal church who teach that Jesus Christ and God our father is the Holy spirit Today and not 3 distinct beings of the Divine God. Mormons also claim and perform convincing miracles and prophecies. in fact there are many totally opposing faiths that all claim prophecy, tongues and healing. Then you have the Prosperity Charismatics who base faith on giving them money to buy Jets, and big mansions. The one thing that saddens me is the lack of respect in the teachings of Jesus Christ as revealed in the New Testament. What I read in the book of Acts and the early church is very different from the megachurch form of moneygrabbing, praise leaders, and hand clapping that seems to typify the modern Charismatic Movement. Where is the humility, helping the needy and poor, and the need for forgiveness through the Blood of Christ, which is constantly preached in the Bible? We need to get back to worshipping God and not the mammon of many in the happy clappy feel good megachurches of today.

Worshipping God is a start, but how about actually trying to live out the teachings of Christ? When Christians start doing that, rather than acting like tyrannical assholes who wish to force the tenants of their faith on all of society by using state power to deny me marrying for love should I love the "wrong" person, or to deny rastafarians their right to smoke cannabis because they have some deluded nonsense belief that their faith makes them better, and wiser than everyone else, and many have a savior complex, believing they have the right to save the rest of us from themselves. They're tyrants in waiting, little stalinists wanting to control everyone... kind of like you'd expect the devil to do, but not followers of a truly divine being. I think Jesus Christ has the most sound claim to divinity, and I love most of his teachings. If Christians acted more like him, I'd probably have converted years ago, but they don't, so I don't want to sully my name by associating with such contemptible people who seek to control others, they are truly the lowest form of life, it doesn't matter whether they're Christian, Muslim, or Communists. Those who seek to control are beneath respect, and human dignity, they do not deserve either. Yet we should extend both to them, because that is what Christ would do.

I am not trying to be self righteous in my answer. However, I do not like or support names describing Christians as anything other than descriptions given in the early church or New testament. Pentecostal is a term that was invented at the turn of the 20th century, and further divides people into sectarian divisions. The plea of the early church of the first century was that all Christians be united in thought and mind (1 Corinthians 1:10; John 17:21) and to speak where the bible spoke and be silent where the bible is silent (2 John 1:6, John 14:15). If such a course was followed, we would not have the thousands of sectarian groups among Christianity that we see today.

I like how you show the beginning of some other denominations as well. speaking of tongues is in the Bible and it helps you realize that the word of God has power and not just any power(voodoo, witchcraft) but all power in Christ Jesus. I believe the speaking of tongues, receiving the holy ghost is the beginning of faith, it helps you learn God's word in the spirit and helps you walk in the spirit where you once walked in the flesh. Do I believe you need it to get into heaven, I don't know but it is a wonderful thing to help get you there.

      @flamingooneleg77 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

What he said & what the Bible teaches.was, The receiving of the Spirit is what Jesus gives you when you get saved. The Spirit seals you until the day of redemption. The speaking in tongues of today is not the same Biblical tongues spoken in the Bible. The real word is not tongues, it is langues, real down to earth languages that man can understand. The word tongues & unknown tongues was added in by the k.j.s people. So the tongues of today is not true Biblical languages but gibberish. The word Holy Ghost is another word that was added in by them. It's Holy Spirit. It was for the most part unbiased, but he did show that Charles Fox deviated from the scripture when he separated the work of Jesus & the Holy Spirit for salvation & said that speaking in tongues is baptism of the H.S. The Bible teaches that the work of the H.S. is to Baptise us into the church, the body of Christ. The biblical speaking in languages in the book of acts was a supernatural sign & what was supernatural was that they all heard people that did not know their languages speak in it anyways & they heard the wonders of God & they believed & Jesus started His church by saving them. Then they went out & preached the word of salvation & then there came a time when every langues knew the plan of salvation & they no longer had to speak in different languages. So the true Biblical speaking in tongues( languages) ceased. The last time we here about tongues is in the book of cor. & the reason for that is becaused they were misusing it & it is still being misused today. Today in the modern church, there has not been one example of someone speaking in a supernatural language that they do not know to a people that know that langues. Even if there was, it would have to be supernatural & that would really edified the Church the way true tongues should. Hope this helps somebody.

Anyways it was my 2nd day, and we went to church. I enjoyed the service overall, but I was confused/impressed why the pastor kept talking in hebrew. Lol of course when I asked I learned what tongues were. When it comes to tongues I think they are sincere, and could be real. I kept praying, and nothing happened so I felt like like I was bad. Anyways Pentecostals can seem extreme, but in reality it's passion. In their eyes they aren't condemning you they just want to sincerely save you, and have a godly life. In the end it's your heart, and faith between you, and God that matter. All we know is 0.9% of it all.

Sure we still have healing and God answers prayer but the kind of power exhibited in the first years went away . Everyone would have believed and there would be no use of speaking about faith. The Gospel would not need to be spread, with words, People would see the healing and the signs and wonders. We would not need faith/. Greater is he that believes without seeing .. Matthew 28.
Practically everyone i knew during the Jesus freak movement on the seventies and the charismatic movement no longer follow Jesus . The modern belief in the supernatural gifts disappointed people and they based belief on what they saw rather than on faith . Faith cannot be taken away or lost because it is not based on this world. You must admit you have never seen the kind of healing Jesus Did in today's world. Healing of the soul is the important thing. Believe me i know it hurts.

If the GENUINE gift of tounges still bestowed by the Holy Spirit I think He would give it to some people but not most. I dont think gift speaking in tounges will make you love everyone, I ask God mostly that love in me will grow towards God and my neighbor. Not gifts everyone looks over that Its called context. If we read tge buble in context it clears up the " tongues" issue. If God does everthing i. decency n order. Whats the exact order they recieved tongues. What exactly the happened. They were all in one place waiting, they heard a mighty rushing wind, it filled the room, tongues of fire on they head, they began to speak in "tongues" languages from every nation not jibberish. Then they had power to got witness around the world!!!!! Making disciples n baptizing people. No, not at all. it’s just that the 1904 revival in Wales is often credited as inspiring the Azusa Revival. I’m coming at this as a student of history, not a judge of the hearts of revivals.

Cecil Robeck covers this well...in his book on Azusa Street Mission and Revival.

It doesn’t matter….what matters is that there are 6 billion lost souls on earth! Let’s unite to bring them to Jesus

Reeves advises us to not judge the extremes of our Pentecostal "brothers".
Reeves does not at all hesitate to judge even the smallest aspects of dissent such as Gnosticism which negates any real need for a church or church structure, or a collection plate.
Reeves also directly aligns with ancient orthodox writings that lead to such monstrosities as the Catholics. But, business is business ain't it Dr. Apologetic Reeves?

It's been getting unscientific for a long time. The charismaticism in Antarctica is an interesting statistic though, to be sure.

For the past year I have had no contact with a church, whether it be Evangelical or charismatic. After over 50 years of warming metal folding chairs and pews, helping to lead true worship, and watching the choices being made by today's leadership that are so very unscriptural, especially the nar and impartation movements, I realized how far off the path the vast majority of the church is being misled and I decided to remove myself from any further indoctrination that had been taking place in my life for far too many wasted years. I began again to long for purity, simplicity and a very word-centered community. Instead where I found myself was among an emotion driven, understudied, and wordless mass of followers. Where to go from here is pretty much up to the Lord for him to work in me both to Will and to do of his good pleasure and to let Him finish the work that he's begun in me, for it is not by might or by power but by my Spirit saith the Lord. It will take His intervention to turn things around by cleaning up the present mess.
