Population of Bowie County is like 94K today. Meaning if it had the same pop back in the day. Texarkana would probably have the most pop in Texas and possibly Arkansas.
So Texas has to find, hire and maintain 254 District Attorneys. Even in the most mundane, insignificant ( Ain’t nothing ever happening in this county ) counties 🤔. Maaan the fact Texas even pulled something like this off is epic on so many levels.
Very nice! I've been trying to find maps of how the counties were created. I've been visiting all 254 county courthouses for the past few years. A lot of the historical markers will say the county was created from such-and-such a county.
That's an ambitious goal! We have a few folks who've done it, and the historic courthouses are breathtaking. If you're still in search of maps, this might be a good place to start if you haven't visited it already: www.mapofus.org/texas/
Yes because Interstate 10 in texas has the longest stretch of interstate of any state (889 miles) I don't know where you live in Florida ( I am not a stalker) but I-10 from Jacksonville to Alabama 380 miles Alabama is 53 miles Mississippi is 75 miles Louisiana is 255 miles and there you go you are at the Texas border assuming you drive 70 miles per her it would actually take you 10 hours 54 minutes
Roman Soiko so, who wants to drive 16 hours straight! Anyways local counties help keep the ideas and customs that the locals want, not somebody across the state
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Texas had 254 counties. Each county serves as a local administrative division with its own government. If there have been changes or updates since then, it would be advisable to consult the latest information from official Texas government sources for the most accurate count and any recent developments regarding counties in the state.
*Jimenez County, Texas* (255) Seat: Cornudas Largest community: Dell City Split as the northern portion of Hudspeth County, and named after Damacio Jimenez, a Hispanic Texian hero who fought for Texas independence. *Bean County, Texas* (256) Seat (and largest community): Langtry Bean County was then the portion of Val Verde County west of the Pecos River, and named after Judge Roy Bean who claimed to be "The Only Law West of the Pecos". *Mirando County, Texas* (257) Seat: Ranchitos Las Lomas Largest community: Mirando City Mirando County was the eastern half of Webb County, and named after Spanish land grantee Nicolás Mirando. *Duadelphia County, Texas* (258) Seat (and largest community): Duadelphia Named after the Greek translation for "Dos Hermanos" (name of the twin peaks located in what was then the northwestern portion of Webb County), Duadelphia County is located near the Rio Grande. *Rip Ford County, Texas* (259) Seat (and largest community): Comstock Rip Ford County was then the portion of Val Verde County between the Pecos and Devils rivers, and named after John Salmon "Rip" Ford. *Granger County, Texas* (260) Sear (and largest community): Barstow Carved out of the western section of Ward County, Granger County is named after US (Union) Army Department of Texas Major General Gordon Granger. He's the man who proclaimed General Order No.3, which completely freed all the slaves in Texas in 1865.
When trying to learn all 254 counties, I am the one who does not love a good grid. I keep getting to 252 and then one or two of those square counties around Lubbock screws up my perfect streak. Every. Single. Time.
Georgia has a way denser concentration of counties than Texas, Texas has an average of 1057 square miles per county while Georgia has an average of 373 square miles per county
Fun fact: it'd be incredibly easy to merge a bunch of texas's western counties into larger ones, which would eliminate over 80 counties. Source: a map I made about it because I was curious.
Luis Fernando Núñez Manautou Wtf are you talking about? I’m not even from Texas and I still think that statement is bs. Both American Texans and Hispanic Texans seceded from Mexico because they were sick of the weakness and corruption of the Mexican government at the time. Wait did I say at just that time? I meant even to this day. Just saying.
Ser Devil Check your facts. Only condition mexico gave to American settlers: no salves. Slavery was abolished in Mexico since its inception so it was unconstitutional. What did Sam Houston and friends did? They brought slaves. What did Mexico do? They told them not to bring slaves and to free the ones already in Texas or the Mexican government would intervene. What do American settlers do? Proclaim independence. There you go. Hope you can really check into that instead of talking blind about things you know, apparently, absolutely nothing about
1:50 each one unique in and shape shape? i mostly see squares, u americans have only square shapes for all land pieces u probably can distinguish state imperfections being a square by centimeters
What's not being explained is _why_ we have counties in the first place. How do you confuse _municipality_ with _county?_ A county is ruled by a "Count" or "Countess" and can be found in an aristocratic government. Therefore one would expect to find counties in countries such as England and France who had shires, earls, dukes, counts, nobles, and gentry. A _municipality_ is from the Latin _municipalis_ literally "pertaining to a citizen of a free town, of a free town". In practice it would be a community, municipality, free town, or city whose citizens have the privileges of a Roman citizen but are governed by their own laws. So the question would be, why do we have counties when The Constitution prohibits gentry, nobility and the crown from possessing power of dominion in the United States of America?

"Texas was divided into counties, like every other state. Eventually, that number came to be 254." The end.

Actually in 1821 in wasn't Spanish rule it was Mexican rule

No, the Spaniards banged the Mayans, turned em into Mexicans

I think some of those less populated west Texas counties have district attorneys that cover several counties. So that makes more sense logistically.
Very nice! I've been trying to find maps of how the counties were created. I've been visiting all 254 county courthouses for the past few years. A lot of the historical markers will say the county was created from such-and-such a county.

New Englanders and Europeans, that's who. Not a grid in sight up here.
Blame it on colonialism
@LugubriousGeorge Yea most of em still got nobody living up there

The 1 days ride thing is interesting, considering the furthest corners of Texas are about a days drive from Austin now.
I love Texas more than any other states.
yes but today we have cars and we can drive across the state in 16 hours
