The drag coefficient isn't related to the size of the rider, but only to how streamlined he/she can get. Of course the frontal area has the same importance of the Cd factor but it's important to know the difference: a Boeing 747 has a Cd of 0.04, it doesn't mean that it takes the same force to push it as a bike
The livestream of the Dan Bigham didn't show any data or lapcounter/time. This was really poor from a spectators point of view. What do you think about that?
The Q factor should be optimised for the hip width and musculature of the rider. After Obree's records many cyles were built with much too narrow Q angle because this was not understood. This affects power output and can cause problems and injuries. I am sure Dan got his right.
Thanks for Supernicing my Vitus guys! Made my week! Ollie should get dropped on the next GCN lunchtime ride so he can sit alone in a coffee shop and reflect on this colossal self-promotion fail. Perhaps all his efforts are being poured into promoting shirts and bidons unpretentiously. :)
Once we train for months and then ride in a velodrome for an hour at our physical limit - it is only then we should have comments about others who have completed the task. Either then, or the day that typing comments becomes equally physically exhausting.

One thing of note - next year the uci rules for handlebar position are being relaxed. I'm assuming Ganna, being taller, may be able to get into a better position with the alterations. He looks cramped now to me, he's obviously doing just fine, I do think the longer reach will be helpful though. And seriously the lack of data being broadcast during the uci record from Bigham was terrible. If he was recording all of that, show the viewers, they didn't even have up/down progressions by lap.
Dan Bigham……great job!!! The research and testing the systems to evaluate the marginal gains reminds me a bit of what Greg LeMond was doing back during his winning years.

Best comment ever by GCN presenter goes to Alex…”for his pleasure?” If I had been drinking milk while watching that, I know the milk would’ve been shooting out my nose, I laughed so hard!
Ganna has some KOMs/top tens near my house from a TT during the ATOC. This dude was pulling 500+ watts for like 45 minutes surging over 600. I think he can set a really fast hour record, maybe even close to 60k an hour. Peep the segments between Morgan hill and San Jose and his ride- I suspect Gannas true FTP is above 500.
A long sleeve skinsuit would take care of that, but then yes, you will 'cook' all that much more/quicker in the temps they need to keep those enclosed wooden bowls at to produce these records. ☹
okay so... hour record holder and not tubular? so... is it totally cool to use clincher or even tubeless on the track? someone please clarify this?! cheers!
All that tech but still an amazing physical achievement by Dan. Incredible to think that Chris Boardman went further years ago, Superman still more aero than they can achieve with the rules today, or was Boardman a Superman?
Drag coefficient is always applied to the frontal area of the object in question. Ganna’s frontal area is obviously larger, but why is his coefficient necessarily higher? Obviously this still makes him overall less aerodynamic, but I’m not sure it’s necessarily to do with his drag coefficient?
Well done to Dan Bigham Not throwing a spanner in the works . There getting close to Chris Boardman record. Today's science and tech still can't beat over 20 year tech
I would think long hair and a beard would act like a fairing, making the rider more aero. Also trapping a thin layer of air close to the surface thus further reducing drag.
I think you’re confusing Cd with frontal area, the fact that Filippo Ganna is significantly larger than Dan Bigham, does not imply that his Cd’s automatically higher. An Airbus A380’s Cd is 0.022. e.g. Fd=0.5×ρ×Cd×Af×V^2
Re the new hour record holder, how does the drug testing approach work in a situation such as this, where the rider is not (to my knowledge) professional, on the World Tour and so on?
Anything higher than 6 watts per kilo is unnatural. When Greg Lamond won the TDF his VO2 max was 93. I will say that again so you're sure I didn't mistype it, 93. Greg never hit 400 FTP. The direct opposite I guess would be like Marco Pantani's Alpe d'Huez record. With the right help there isn't to many limits on what the guys can do as long as their bodys hold together.
Well...you need to update yourself. MVDP, Pog, Wout & co have changed things a bit. They are in the high 7's for watts per kilo. Armstrong was pumping out 6.3. Most of the top riders of his era were at 6-6.2watts per kilo.
If I'm not wrong Ganna is 1,93m tall, Bigham is 1,83. That's roughly 5%. So his A part from cdA should "only" be 11% higher, not the 16% Ollie is estimating.
@@julmeissonnier yes, if Ganna could match Bigham's cd factor, his A factor and therefore cdA should be about 11% higher. The exakt numbers are related to the body proportions of both. In Aero Position a long back and short legs are beneficial, because your back lays horizontal anyways.
