I'm a musician with recording experience and I don't hear a vocal backing track during the chorus at all. I personally think all the vocals are live (both lead and backing vocals) and they sound great! Please note, during the chorus not only is Sonny singing live, but so is the guitarist and bassist (at times). Maybe that's what you're hearing and thinking it's pre-recorded.
