- This game offers a very good lesson in singles tactics.
Hartono in the 2nd set had to deal with a very hard hitting Luan Jin and was playing against the wind.Being a doubles player good in playing drives he managed to keep the shuttle going downwards and out of reach of Luan Jin to prevent LJ from smashing .Hartono could clear quite comfortably against the draught and his net dribbles were kept close to the net aided by the wind.LJ was reluctant to lift as he could not find the correct length just like Rudy in the first set previously.
Hartono may not have been as powerful and fast as his opponents but he was a master tactician. The same tactic was also used by Chen Long in the recent 2017 China Open against Viktor.We did not have the privilege in the past of good technical commentary by coaches on TV like we have today.Players used to drag the game over 3 sets to conserve energy for the final set,but nowadays they tend to give up when they play on the side where they have the draught behind their backs and play well on the "better" side. - กีฬา

Rudy Hartono's comeback to play what would probably be his sixth and last Thomas Cup campaign in Indonesia's defense of the Thomas Cup held at the Royal Albert Hall in London reminded me of the veteran Ferry Sonniville who was called out of retirement by the PBSI for the 1967 Thomas Cup challenge round with Malaysia at Jakarta.
Sonniville,was the hero and one of the architects of Indonesia's hat-trick of Thomas Cup triumphs from 1958-1964.
But after helping Indonesia to edge Denmark 5-4 in the challenge round at Tokyo to retain the Thomas Cup,Soneville had not plated competitively for three years.At 36,Sonneville was lacking in fitness.It wasn't a surprise that he was outplayed in straight sets by Yew Cheng Hoe and Tan Aik Huang.
And the same happened in the 1982 Thomas Cup finals held at London.
For the defense of the Thomas Cup Indonesia once again had to coax an aging Rudy Hartono out of retirement to feature in what would probably be his last Thomas Cup campaign.Like Sonneville in the 1967 challenge round with Malaysia,Hartono found Luan Jin just too hot to handle and lost in three sets.
Indonesia had led 3-1 in the first night of play and many thought it was all over for China.
China which had gained admittance to the IBF in July 1981 had trounced Denmark 8-1 in the semifinals whereas the defending champions Indonesia had also beaten England by a similar margin.
So an explosive final was to be expected.
Trailing 3-1 China won the next four ties in the second night of contest to end Indonesia's twelve years domination and strength hold of the Thomas Cup winning 5-4 in the final.For Indonesia it was their first defeat in the Thomas Cup since wresting the Cup from Malaysia in 1970.For China it was the first of their ten Thomas Cup triumphs.
For the legendary Rudy Hartono it was his final farewell and swan song.
Arguably the greatest shuttler of all time the legendary Rudy Hartono was coerced out of retirement by the PBSI to play in his sixth and last Thomas Cup campaign.
Rudy Hartono then aged 32 plus had retired thrice but for the loved of his country he agreed and travelled with the Indonesian team to defend the Thomas Cup at the 1982 Thomas Cup finals in London.
For Indonesia they were hoping to win the Cup for the fifth time and created history something which China did from 2004 to 2012 and the Indonesia team from 1994 to 2002 also did.
But already China were a force to be reckoned with when they were admitted to the IBF in July 1981.In 1980 China had edged Indonesia 5-4 in the "Super Clash" at Singapore.
And in 1982 the much anticipated Thomas Cup final confrontation between Cup holders Indonesia and China took place at the Royal Albert Hall.
On the first night China were trailing 3-1 and Indonesia were poised to retain the Thomas Cup for the fourth time.
But they did not anticipate a great come back from China in the next four ties as three singles and a doubles ties were won in succession with Han Jian overpowering Liem Swie King in three sets prevailing by 17-14 in the rubber.
And Luan Jin brushed aside the legendary Rudy Hartono 15-9,1-15 and 15-7.Before that Chen Chang Jie had no problems in taming Luis Ponggoh in straight sets.
Indonesia should have squared it at 4-4 but Eddy Kartono and Heryanto surprisingly were blown off in the deciding set at 15-1 by Yao Xi Ming and Sun Zhian.
As for Hartono his defeat to Luan Jin was his last ever competitive match and said,"There might be exhibition matches after this but since I loved Indonesia I came out of retirement to help Indonesia retain the Thomas Cup.In fact I had retired thrice."

Aged 32 at that time,and well over the hill,it was probably the last international match Hartono ever played .Luan Jin in contrast went downhill 3 years later at 25,after winning the 83 All England and GP and winning his singles in the 84 Thomas Cup Final,and reappeared for the last time in the 1985 ABC tournament in KL where he was beaten by Icuk Sugiarto in the quarter finals and finally eclipsed by Yang Yang and Zhao Jian Hua.

Hartono was definitely not at his best but wasn’t over the hill. Luan Jin was an attacking player. He let the second set go to regain composure and came back smashing in the 3rd set to win the game. Hartono was known to be an aggressive and fast player during his heyday but had slowed down. He probably was the greatest badminton ever.

Wtk dulu temani nenek tetangga kita ,nonton di rumah bos buyung di tahun 76 sampai 81 sangat seru melihat teman2 nenek bertarung satu tim pegang cina,satu tim lagi pegang cina dgn taruhan duit,,setlah pertandingan selesai yg menang beli mknan jd kita mkn bareng beramai2 sangat seru masa itu wkt saya smp dan sma masa itu,dulukan kita blum ada tv jd semua kumpul di rumah bos buyung setiap ada pertandingan bulu tangkis,,berkumpul dgn orang2 sesama hoby bulu tangkis sangat seru masa itu

It takes a great master and exceptionally talented player to be able at 32 years to match and outsmart younger and good opponents.This is also true of great masters like Tang Xian Hu,Hou Chia Chang,Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei who were still thrashing younger players when in their 30s.
Compare it to say Lee Hyun Il in his late 30 s who was whitewashed recently by Kento Momota
